The reason you had a hard time starting it is because you closed the choke and then primed it. With the choke close when you prime these little to no fuel is going into the carb.
You are making huge adjustments and quickly . Like you said lisen to the engine but make small slow adjustments . If you are suspicious of the settings bring the adjusting screws back in counting the turns . Then set to 1.5 turns out as a starting point . You also did not adjust the high side at full throttle .
