As someone who is training to be an advanced driving tutor this was so useful to watch as it provides an indicator (pun not intended) as to the sort of standard I may expect from people embarking on advanced driver training. There were many additional elements where Ben would be marked down on an advanced driving test but I do feel that with some tuition he would soon be getting a whole load more enjoyment from his driving. For example on the narrower country road with the National Speed Limit Ben could have been making significantly better progress safely and legally by using advanced driving skills. If you read this Ben consider a RoSPA or IAM advanced driving course.
@@AdvanceDrivingSchool Great. I'll watch it now. I'm considering doing my ADI to support career progression. I understand there may be advanced driving elements which could come into conflict with DVSA standards, e.g. lateral road positioning 🙄
This should be a mandatory 1 year follow up test, for all new drivers. I passed over 4 months ago and still love all your content and take something from every upload, thanks.
Agreed - new drivers become experienced drivers and then old drivers, there should constant appraisals of your driving skills every three years (2 years for commercial and emergency vehicle drivers)
Nice video! I do find very strange and a bit impractical the principal behind check mirrors before applying signal. The indicator expresses your intention about a manoeuvre. The only purpose of the indicator to give away information about which direction you would like to go (and will if it is safe to). Performing checks before signalling seems to take away time from others on the road to realise your intention and you usually expected to observe your environment right before a manoeuvre anyway (in order to mitigate risk due to env. change), while signal would be a logical first hint to give other parties. Which is the safer way? Any ideas?
@@AdvanceDrivingSchool Sorry, I wanted to debate the legitimate of the routine itself, if it makes and represents more sense in practical application. The main point behind it is basically if I want to do a right turn, applying the indicator first makes more sense, than checking my surroinding, before doing so. In my opinion it does not. On the roads I experience that ppl thinks that if they signal they have the right of way, which is understandable as this is a way to interpret the MSM, yet dangerrous. (perfect example: merging to the highway) You checked your mirror, you apply your signal, but you cannot perform the maneuvre on a busy day as the sliproad has to give way to the motoway.
My husband and I had a major argument about this, I think it was a bit different when he took his test several years ago and he said the same thing. I checked the mirror and allowed the vehicle already close by go first before signalling. He felt I should have signalled immediately to make my intention known but I was taught to check the mirror first to make sure it was okay to signal. He still believes I'm wrong.
I was told in court I had to take an extended driving test. Luckily when I applied for provisional and spoken to DVLA they had no record of it. Passed first time with 2 minors in 38 minutes. Although passed 2 theory tests because Novid locked me off from lessons and a test. Maybe enough time passed?
I'v was banned from driving due to motorbikes and I have to a take Extended Driving Test in order to get my driving license, do you think it would be easier for me to pass because I haven't picked up any bad habits or will it be harder because its twice the time?
It’s definitely more difficult, as you have a 50% longer test with the same pass mark. However if you drive safely it shouldn’t be a problem. Good luck 🤞🏼
The camera has a wide-angle lens, so everything looks further away than it really is. If you measure the gap with a stopwatch it is well under two seconds for some time. Perhaps a real examiner might only give a minor fault, but we felt a serious fault was justified.
Got one of these comin up for 2x dangerous driving, feel like gettin in his car and skirting off and handbrsking it between two parked cars and saying can i drive whilst he screams n shits his pants, but id be back in the same situation 🙄😂
Is it essential to check the rear view mirror when braking due to a car in front braking? A few people older than me have said that you need to do this but my instructor has not yet mentioned this to me
It is a good idea to check how close following traffic is before slowing down, just in case you are being tailgated. If you are, you can brake earlier than usual to reduce the chance of getting hit. This video explains further: When To Check Your Mirrors th-cam.com/video/vG__H_eqapc/w-d-xo.html
A normal driving test is 40 minutes long, and an extended 60 minutes so it’s 50% longer. However the same amount of faults are allowed so the driver must be careful.
Checking the blind spots by looking over the shoulder is so wrong and dangerous. When taking my driving licence in my country 20+ years ago they always telling us that the most dangerous situation is loosing the front view (or the next moving direction) that's we were trained to check the blind spots using mirrors, the right one by slightly bending forward over the driving wheel and check the right mirror and the left one by looking the middle mirror thru the left rear window. Like that you never turn your face away from your main direction. After 15 years driving like that (and I still believe that this method is much better) I was forced to do it different here, jus to be able o pass this stupid test. Is so disapointing instead of driving safely to start learning the way examiners expect you to drive. To pass the test you MUST learn o shake your head like an crazy idiot just for the dam examiner be sure that you looked at that mirror or checked that spot when you normally do it without moving your head. I did check the mirrors before the roundabout, I was the only car approaching, check the first exit when entering the roundabout - no car at all, I was the only, signalled and took the second exit and that bitch record this as a fault, because I did't check the left mirror before signalling...WHY???, the fuck...WHY? No car behind, no car on left exit? what will change in a half of a second? A car will fall down from above? I understand that it should be a routine for the new drivers, but I am convinced that the examiners approach to the experienced drivers that exchange their licence to UK one must be different, as we already don't plan our action and we read faster the road situation. After 2 fails I finally passed the test and all I have to say is that the UK driving test is the most wrong and dangerous practise I ever seen in my life. Is such a shit that transform peoples in dangerous drivers, coz nobody...NOBODY continue to drive the same way as they was prepared for this shity test. A car can come into the blind spot so fast. The test IS strict, but it is meant to keep everyone safer. In Canada they do the look over the shoulders too. :)
In the DSA: Driving the Essential Skills.... guide it says you should check your blind spot when moving off (but at this point you will be stationary still so it doesn't matter if you lose track of what is in front of you). For occasions when you are moving (such as changing lanes) it recommends only a quick sideways glance since it does say that doing a full blink check on the move can be dangerous.
