I still have my 1973 RT1, I got it in 1978 and used to ride it to work when I was an apprentice. Boy have I had some injuries from this bike over the years. Every time I ride it, I feel 19 again. AUS
The first time I road this new beautiful beast I got off my 250 and got on my brothers new 360 I can still remember the feeling of the additional power!! It was the coolest thing ever!! I knew within 30 seconds I was going to buy one. It was a beautiful bike for sure.
I owned one of these bikes back in the mid 70's, a '72 RT1.I rode it for about 20 years. A great bike, a little heavy, not a lot of suspension but I didn't know the difference, it was my 1st big bike. I got it when I was 12. A lot of great memories and still have the scars to prove it! The second one was a '71 model. I found it after I was married. There was no comparison in the power. The '71 would stand up in the 1st 3 gears. The 72 was hard to stand up in 1st gear. In trying to find out why the '71 had so much more power I found out the carb and reed valve assembly was different. Upon further inspection, I found the flywheel on the '71 had a timing advance built in to the flywheel and the '72 didn't. I guess the extra timing advance made the all the extra power. Both were great bikes for there time. With todays technolagy the 125's would run circles around them both....
72 was the first year for reed valves, the 71 was piston port. I agree that a modern 125 is a lot more powerful in stock form, but these old bikes can also be woken up with modifications.
