  • I was recently contacted by Jake (DALLMYD here on TH-cam) about taking him out to find some megalodon shark teeth and other fossils here in Florida. The trip was an absolutely blast and Jake found multiple nice juvenile megalodon shark teeth, a big mako tooth, snaggletooth shark teeth and more.

    It's so pleasant to see three, young and handsome men having such a great time together, enjoying and encouraging one another in such a healthy hobby! Your kindness toward one another shows with every smile and high-five given. Even with a little healthy competition, the kindness and happiness for one another never wains. So refreshing to see in this day and age. I always enjoy your video's, not only for your finds but for the joy you bring this old girl. 😊 ( I was born raised in Jacksonville Fl., and played in many creeks as a young girl, just wished I'd looked a little closer way back when ). 😉

    Man I've been binge watching your videos all day! I love them! I am now officially inspired, and I want to go on shark tooth hunts myself. However I don't live anywhere near Florida. Do you by chance know of a decent place to hunt on the west coast? More specifically the Washington/ Oregon area? Thank you! -Dallin

    • @PaleoCris
      @PaleoCris  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I know that Bakersfield CA has crazy shark tooth sites, and I have heard of marine fossil sites in Oregon. You might want to try searching for your state on The Fossil Forum, a website full of collectors that post their finds...you should be able to find a lot more info than what I can provide. Good luck, and glad you're enjoying the vids!

  • @chimneyswift11isboss
    @chimneyswift11isboss 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    i think something that would be cool to see in these videos is how long you guys have been out there and a little more into the process of what goes into it. Dont get me wrong, i like seeing all the finds back to back, i just think it might be more interesting to know how long it takes to find another tooth. As of now it seems like you find them super easily when im sure your out there all day and takes some time.

    • @PaleoCris
      @PaleoCris  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the recommendation. maybe I can do a timelapse here and there to show the passing of time without it being too boring.

    • @chimneyswift11isboss
      @chimneyswift11isboss 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      PaleoCris yeah I understand it’s probably hard to make it not boring when u aren’t finding stuff. I can tell how satisfying it is when u find the tooth, but to me at least, it’s not as exciting as it could be because we aren’t seeing the grind that goes into making that sweet find. I may be the only one who feels this way. I don’t want to come here telling u how to do things by any means so if I’m overstepping by offering suggestions just let me know.

    Where in Florida did you find this? Everglades or one of the runoff areas?

    • @PaleoCris

      Northern part of FL in most of my vids...higher elevation means more erosion and usually more fossils.

  • @stormevans6897

    Any resources you would recommend to start learning the anatomies of extinct animals to aid in fossil identification?

    • @PaleoCris
      @PaleoCris  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I’d start by learning the anatomy of modern animals since most fossil animals were pretty similar (at least the later vertebrates). I learned a lot by examining modern animal skeletons and googling images/diagrams of the skeletal morphology of different animals. Once you learn the morphology of basic classes of animals, you can ID things you’ve never even seen before based on similarities and differences to other skeletal elements that you are familiar with.

    is this private land, state land, what? Do you guys know you need a collecting permit in Florida for anything major?

    • @PaleoCris
      @PaleoCris  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have both an individual and multi-user permit for collecting done on state land, but this isn't state land. Still, I work closely with the Florida Museum of Natural History/University of Florida's vertebrate paleontology department and donate scientifically significant discoveries to them for study, even if the land the fossils are on isn't state owned. I very much enjoy the contribution to science I can make in that way.

    • @TheDfarhie
      @TheDfarhie 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I used to live in Fla., an alum of the University of Florida where I worked part-time at the Florida State Museum as an Assistant Curator. Do you know if Dr. David Webb is still in residence there? He was my Vertebrate Paleo teacher back in the day. I notice you and others who post videos about meg hunting and the like never mention the stream, river or estuary you are hunting in. Why is that? There are so few public places that one can fossil or gem/mineral hunt anymore.

    • @PaleoCris
      @PaleoCris  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dr. David Webb retired quite a few years ago. Most of my interactions have been with Dr. Richard Hulbert (and Russ McCarty before he retired), the collections manager for UF's vertebrate paleontology department. As far as not giving location, it's one of those things where I'd be glad to teach anybody how to find sites, but I put a lot of time researching and miles of exploration to find the places I have. If good sites were everywhere, I'd be less reluctant to post them online, but as it is, people check my photos for GPS location tags (which are never there) 🤣
