As a lifelong Boise State fan, and a casual fan of The Big 12, I’m really excited that momentum is heading towards an invite. It’s a great fit, much better than The Pac ever could be. BYU is a historic rival, TCU is a heated opponent. With BSU thus new conference will have all the teams that have performed as a power program in mid-major conferences and the historic programs of The Irate 8. This conference will be legitmately a true split between legendary schools and merited up and coming programs. It’ll be a lot of fun to watch.

Simply put the Big 12 was only going to add the 4 of the best G5 schools available. I don't think adding 6 or 8 right away was seriously an option. Memphis was just not in the invite realignment pecking order before UH. Cincy, UCF and BYU. But Boise State and Memphis are in the driver's seat as the next invites to any power 5 conference.

Nothing wrong with adding USF other than what they did to UCF joining the Big East. Payback is now.
Nothing wrong with Colorado State or San Diego State either, other than distance - but build a western division or pod out there & it would work - the western schools may end up Round 3, however, imo - all at once.

Speaking as someone who was born and raised in Memphis and went to the university…this guy is flat wrong. There’s nothing more Memphis has wanted than to get into a P5 conference. Yes, we’ve been burned and fans have a “we’ll believe it when we see it” approach, but don’t think for a minute we don’t want it. Fresno St has the facilities and quality and SDSU has a new stadium almost ready and they are good in Football and Basketball. I love Boise St, but Idaho is not a big market and besides football, they don’t really offer much, but I wouldn’t turn them down. I like South Florida and SMU. I think they should drop Memphis. I’m a Big12 fan, too bad the Big12 couldn’t get Arizona St and Arizona, but leaving USC, UCLA OREGON, STANFORD, WASHINGTON for OSU, Kansas, Baylor, WV, Cincinnati, BYU wouldn’t be a good trade off. (I would love my Sun Devils in the Big12). Can’t wait to see how the Big 12 grows and competes in the future. Going to 16 is the future, but what happens if the Big10 does and try and steal Kansas and OSU OR ISU? What about the ACC going to 16 and WV move? • @georgeburns1561
    @georgeburns1561 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

A short dissertation on Memphis football. This is in response to the guy that messaged during the show that "Memphis considered shuttering the program 10 years ago." Bullsh!t, the guy (or gal) has no idea what he/she is talking about.
We started playing football in 1912. We moved to D-1a in 1959. We were a VERY GOOD - GREAT team starting out. In 1963 under Spooke Murphey, we went undefeated 9-0-1 (we tied #3 Ole Miss 0-0), and finished ranked #14. Through a quirk, we didn't go to a bowl that year. We turned down a bowl invitation to a bowl I can't recall because we were sure we were getting an invitation to the Gator bowl that never came.
Back then we were independent. Sure, we played in the MVC (and won the conference 3 of the 5 years we played in it from '68-'72), but other than that we were independent all the way up to 1996. We played 4 or 5 SEC games per year plus Florida State or the like. In 1987 (in the middle of my college years @ then Memphis State), we went 5-5-1. Yeah, not that great, BUT... People always talk about how "you small schools don't know what it's like going through a "POWER 5" conference schedule.... Anybody can get up for one game..." Well, that year we beat Ole Miss, lost to Vanderbilt, lost to #7 Florida State, lost to Miss. State, and beat #15 Alabama, ALL WITHIN THE FIRST 5 GAMES OF THE SEASON. "A school like Memphis has no idea what it's like....." Yes. We do.
So yeah, we sucked during the late 80s and all of the 90s, but when we hired coach Tommy West, we turned a corner, and I mean from a fanbase perspective. We took off. Of course, DeAngelo Williams didn't hurt.
But now comes the part where you need to pay close attention if you are not from Memphis. See, we have something here called "basketball-only fans". But worse than that, the majority of them are "Tiger basketball-Vol football fans". Or Rebel football fans. Or Alabama football fans. Not that they went to those universities. No, we call them "sidewalk graduates" of those schools. The vast majority of them never set foot in Tuscaloosa, or Knoxville, or Oxford. They are happy to root for the home team in basketball, because the home team is nationally relevant. But C-USA was NOT relevant. So about half the city and surrounding area "adopted" a "local" SEC team. One of 4 or 5.
I have always felt, if Memphis were to get into a RELEVANT football conference, people around here would stop whoring themselves out to the SEC and root for the home team. I mean, hell... they all (well... most) went to college @ Memphis anyway.
So, with this "sidewalk SEC graduate" fan in mind, I will explain this "Memphis considered shuttering the program 10 years ago" bullsh!t. It was a movement... BY THEM. ***And that includes some sports radio personalities here.*** No one in the serious booster levels was EVER entertaining that. As a matter of fact, 12 years ago, we had Lou Holtz come give a keynote address to the Memphis boosters in order to ramp up Tiger football. Of course, we made a HORIBLE hire with Larry Porter, but we quickly rectified that within 2 years (Justin Fuente).
    Since then we have:
    Totally renovated the Murphey center
    Built an IPF
Built state-of-the-art locker rooms at the Liberty Bowl
Addressed the ADA issues at the LB
Added a butt-load of chairbacks at the LB
Gutted the tailgating parking lots into the beautiful new Tiger Lane
Spent millions and millions and millions on campus renovation and new construction (tons of new dorms)
Worked toward (and supposedly will reach by December) R-1 status
In conclusion, We as a fanbase would like to know what Laird Veatch has said or done to indicate that we "are not interested at this time" or "we are not ready yet." Not ready for WHAT? To cash a TV check 3 times the size of our current one? To have superior names come into our stadium more often than once a season? I'm sorry, what exactly is it that we still need to do?

Coming back to this post. (1-7-22) Not sure how it could happen but if the Big 12 could get Notre Dame, Memphis, Boise State and Liberty this would be solid. I know ND has a contract with the ACC but all things can be negotiated. ND would be the premiere team in the Big 12 in which I think that's what they desire to be compared to being in the B10 or ACC. Memphis has a decent athletic program and is in a major city. Boise State would be a travel partner for BYU but they also bring a legit football program for competition purpose and then Liberty is the wild card. Liberty has been trending up the last 10yrs and they are investing in the athletic program. Being a private school means they have private money and they serve as travel partner for West Virginia.

I don't understand the talk of SMU and USF while leaving out a school like Colorado State. If you want to just look at attendance, then you'll realize Colorado State has the 6th best attendance so far this season behind only Cinci, UCF, BYU, Boise, and ECU. Colorado State would be a much better add than SMU and USF when it comes to fan support, money, cultural fit, etc. Let's also not forget Colorado State now has one of the nicest stadiums in all of G5.
