  • One of the most frequently asked questions I get is "I only have 1 room. How do I record my band?".
    Well I'm going to cover 1 setup that has worked for me many, many times... in smaller and larger rooms.
    To demonstarte this setup I'll be joined by a fantastic band called Pickle Rick. Featuring:
    Joshua McClanahan: Bass
    Michael Angeles: Guitar
    Joel Hill: Keys
    Eli Cherry: Drums

      They are all very good players, let me say that first off
      But as a bassist, a pet peeve of mine is that " lagging behind the beat" drum playing at the beginning.
      Also known as "gospel drums", us old timers used to call it "dragging".
      Makes playing bass feel like trying to walk in water up to your waist.
      Bugged me back then, still does.
      Later, during the "funk blues", it seems the drums are much louder than everything else. It may just be the way youtube handles audio, tho...

Nevertheless we have fun doing the best we can with what we've got. This just goes to show how good a product you can get when playing it live like a real band, and a little attention to bleed control. Cheers mate ... I love being a fly on the wall in your studio.

      @Ultimatestudiosinc  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thank you! It was really fun working with them. Vocals are tough when live in the room. I usually try to put the vocalist in the control room with me but on several albums I've done we cut vocals live with the band playing. And quite often we end up keeping some of those vocals because of the performance.
      Next time I'm in a session that we're cutting vocals live in the room I'll try and grab a little behind the scenes footage of the setup.
      Thanks for the comment!

    Wow, it sounds great!
    It very funny, but my live recording setup is kinda backwards, I usually place bass and guitar amps as far from drums as possible, pointed straight at drums. And I'm recording room as well, usually with two cardioid mics, set as spaced pair in front of drums about 3-6 feet from them poited to corners behind the drumkit. I find that bleed from overheads and room mics actually helps everything to sound more cohesive, if it's not too much and if it sounds good.
    But now I should try using some baffles for isolation!

    yesss! I do. And my room is 10'x8' Drums bass and guitar. I need some more rooms. lol or a biger one. Its not easy. Its cool how i have it set up. The drums are in the corner facing out and directly in the other corner is the bass amp and to that adjacent corner is the guitar amps, the way i have the mics place the kick drum mic and the bass guitar mic are both lined up with one another but facing the opposite ways insuring the mics reject the opposing sound waves,and then the guitar hangs out in the other corner,and actually does not get a lot of bleed from the drums or bass at all. 906 and mxl ribbon on the guitar,and then the drum overheads are the worst for bleed. But now i have 414's going though a warm 412 and its sounds a lot better

      Where are your monitors placed? We currently just have the voice mics running thru the mixer since the instruments are so loud just coming through the amps. The recording software is picking up all instruments just not the best quality. The guitarists like it loud. Definitely need more soundproofing!

    My band, B4us, www.reverbnation.com/b4us runs the guitar and bass thru the PA. Our room is the top of a two car garage with sloping walls. We are set up on one of the short walls, with the PA speakers facing us. My drums have a bass drum mic and two overheads, that's it. All of the songs on our site, except "Reality", were recorded "live" with the guitar, bass, and drums with a dummy vocal which was replaced later. The keyboards were also added later (she's not in the band anymore).
    "Reality" was recorded one track at a time.
    On the subject of bleed, I think that it's a part of what makes a band sound like a band. Recordings with no bleed sound like separate people playing the same song, but seperately.

    Do you have to worry about any degree of latency on the recording when you have the over head picking up the room sound from the other instruments or is it so minimal that it is not an issue?

    • @Ultimatestudiosinc
      @Ultimatestudiosinc  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's usually so minimal it's not an issue. The only times it's really been an issue is when I've recorded an actual live set in a club. In that case isolation isn't realistic. When I'm in the studio I can usually mitigate it to the point that it's no problem.

    I wish I could do this with friends but no. My friend who plays guitar can’t play smoke on the water, my other friend can only play violin, no one wants to sing, and I can’t play bass and drums at the same time.

      Hey David! This is from a live broadcast. I send a feed off the console (usually from the AUX's) to the Blackmagic live streaming rig. It's exactly the same feed that I'm monitoring in the control room.
