- Listen to me process mono drums by Nahshon Seville onto cassette…then mix them with the DBX 560 compressor and the DBX 510 Subharmonic Synthesizer…
…that’s a lot of nerdy words.

Maaaannn I really appreciate all the love you’re sending my way bro!! This was such a fun project. I can’t wait for all of the other tracks to come out. Chris you’re a mad scientist!! Lolol and a freakin genius 👏🏿
you, sir, are the drum genius. you built the canvas i just splattered some paint on it 😂
Brings joy to my heart to see young engineers realising that Pro Fools is not where the magic is.
Dude those drums sound amaziiiiing
this is even more RRAAAADDD Thats a great drum sound!
Marc you’re the best and i love recording drums cuz i’m a bassist 😂
in fact, I believe it was Warren where I first heard about the DBX subharmonic synth!
Im up early!
Ill check this at home later!
love all the vintage low budget analogue gear. love that 3440 open reel machine. not a bloody computer in sight .. lovely! my mixer-recorder is a tascam 246. mastering cassette is tascam-122.
ooooh I want a TASCAM 122 one day! have fun!
Very good
I gotta Post Again I have never used my tape out on my 688.
It's secret sauce and you even break down the cables and adapters!!
And was thinking about the whole hybrid deal. And this is such a great video for me, that I can do that and do also it in reverse send my Daw Wavs and Midi drums out to tape to the eight tracks tape out into my Hardware effects.
And later back to the DAW.
One of your best videos so far, thanks always.
Great Drummer, tell him he impressed down under!
you have 8 tracks! could definitely be fun to bring in a DAW recording onto cassette.... I do have something like that planned soon hahaha
@@MadeOnTape Hahaha yeah I want to play with both tape to daw and daw to tape.
Midi drums...frozen rendered and sent to tape for one of your "Parrallel Tricks"
Or just run the midi out straight to Tape and back to the daw.
Definitley a day of kicking back making beats and having fun with the options.
YESSS!!!!!
yahhhhhhhh
Very cool song and sound 👏👏👏👏
thanks for listening!
Really like the sound of that bass drum.
me too! That's mostly Nahshon and the drum itself... the RE20 has an unhyped kick drum sound, usually, but I find it takes EQ really well
I really enjoy your videos, and appreciate the effort you put into them to broadcast them on the interwebbage cabbage. I wish we lived in a time when I wasn't looking at a screen and everyone in this comment section was just a bunch of bros IRL.
yes that would be the best...perhaps a dream for a future for all of us, tho? TapeCon 😂
@@MadeOnTape If you do the US one I'll do the UK one. Only mutants and freaks.
You’re awesome dude
so are you!!!🤘✌️
Sounds great brother!! Great drum beats!! Definitely do a mix breakdown. 👍🏻👍🏻
thanks Mike!
Amazing sounds brother!!! Educational, inspirational and so entertaining to watch. Would love a mix breakdown video too!!
more music from this session forthcoming! will definitely have mix breakdowns. thanks for watching!
Love the 635a in crotch position. Currently working on a hip hop project where all the drums are recorded through cassette tape with just that mic. Got the idea from your one mic video. Great stuff man!
so glad that worked out! It's the VIBE
@@MadeOnTape I would love a video on your full workflow man. That mixer looks cool as hell.
Make a T-SHIRT that says: "WE LIKE NOISE IN TAPE-LAND"
Funky
Can't believe I've never heard of that synth unit, that thing is insanely cool and just like a really good idea. As someone recording drums with not the best mics in a terrible room that interests me a lot.
it’s old school and most older engineers would put it on sources like the isolated kick drum mic. i’m finding it awesome on mono drum tracks 🤘
@@MadeOnTape I have a Tascam 58 (8 track 1/2inch) and do a lot of mono drums with two tracks, one kick the other everything else. I'm also in the midst of putting together a 500 rack so this is pretty appealing. I will say though, it seems like a bit of a unitasker. I couldn't think of a single other use, but it does sound dope. A lot like mixing in a same in protools with a trigger which is popular now.
@@johnkaplun9619 believe me it sounds amazing on other sources. bass guitar, guitar. you can use it subtly on sources to thicken up the bottom. (especially with that low end knob which is about 120Hz)
@@MadeOnTape I guess I was thinking it would be an issue with pinch instruments but I guess not! Very cool!
I'll add this to my Spotify...Dude you MUST do a breakdown on your Bass recording as well.
What and if you cut frequencies. My PC sits between my KRK's with zero EQ straight out of my Audient Sound Card and that Bass sounds awesome.
Nice heads up on DBX!
Edit The Spotify Link is off with a dot in the middle Champ.
Edit...Hearing it now, awesome very 70's fusion prog Funk Vibe...some nice temporary modulations and love your Bass slides.. fat as a Moog actually.
will do! Bit.ly shortened the link, but it was actually spotify that was jacked on the link... try this one! (updated in description)

@@MadeOnTape I sub you on spotify I punched the title in search all good great track and recording.
It's something "my head hears" sitting in my sweet spot cranked a bit...some madness Mike Patton would layer over the top of as well very evocative for any vocal guru.
This vid could warrant a mini series btw.
Great drum sound! What cables did you use to plug the mics into the mixer? It looks like XLR with a 1/4" adapter? If so, what type of adapter/cable are you using? I also have a little vintage mixer, but it's only got 1/4" inputs and I wanna record drums to tape as well!
great question, Dalton! I was using two types of adapters:
1) D'addario XLR to 1/4"
2) the Little IMP impedance transformer
the little IMP helps me plug mic signals into guitar pedals and the portastudio itself.
@@MadeOnTape Awesome! Thanks so much for the info 🙂
I just listened to the track on Spotify, I’d like to hear more about how you achieved that great bass tone. Also, it would be amazing if you could share your approach when you started the project: Did you go to the studio with some ideas for the drummer, or you just wanted him to have complete freedom for those 45 min you recorded?
thanks for listening! I think i’ll make a video on the tones of the other instruments. should be easy to share…
We didn’t have any defined ideas going in, but once we were in the studio we worked together. For instance, Nahshon played that rhythmic figure once, and then we said “that’s a rhythmic hook”…
@@MadeOnTape Nice one! Looking forward to hearing other tracks with Nahshon’s drums on them.
100% thought that immediately... it's like a classic 70's album well produced and mixed.
I am not fantastic, with my Porto studio or even good. but I noticed you were not running at a high speed. you were going really lo fi, that is also cool as you were explaining that depending on the sound you want.
ah yes. My portastudio only has one speed, regular 1 7/8 IPS. That indeed plays a factor in the vibe, thanks for noticing and listening!
Good day. Where can I buy such a device?
hi there! which device? the cassette portastudio? These can be found on Ebay or anywhere like FB Marketplace or garage sales! Happy hunting!
Hi man, I love your videos :) :) and I'm an owner of Tascam ministudio porta two aswell. But - one question has been eluding me for a long time: would it be possible and worth it to try rebuild this Porta to 2-speed beast..?? What do U think about this? I greet you warmly, let the tape fly !! Jay
hmmm. that would be very cool. I'm not much of a circuit bender myself, so you'd have to consult someone like Tetrakan. Check out his channel!
@@MadeOnTape I've tried it before, but his answer was rather terse, but I understand that he has a lot of other work...
Did you know sunglasses aren't really good for your eyes? Take in all the light you possibly can in this lifetime bro..........
i have to edit these videos, and i can’t look at myself 😂
Why are you wearing sunglasses?
i have to edit these videos and i can’t look at myself in the 👁️ 👁️
…i should probably see a therapist 🤷🏻♂️
Fair enough.
