From the Seattle area, Queensryche was my favorite band for many years. 1st time seeing them live was 1983 opening for DIO at the paramount theater. Still one of the best shows I have ever seen. Seen them play with Dream Theater again at the Paramount, it was the start of Dream Theater becoming my favorite band.

Damn, Its funny... all of us pretty much "hone in" on Geoff Tate in this video for the most part because of his God like vocals, but when you stop and dissect the entire song, look and listen, the musicianship from top to bottom is Godamn AMAZING!!! Scott Rockinfeild is a drum machine / monster!? Hes almost singing his own song within his drum kit... Chris and Eddie... Jesus, the vocal Harmonies ON TOP of the Guitar / Bass Riffs, and that INSANE guitar lead with SO much emotion!!! ... my point is, its not just Geoff here that blows my mind, the entire band were beyond amazing... and remember, this is LIVE folks, ...LIVE. FKNG LIVE!!! How many bands actually sound even HALF this good LIVE??? Very, very, very few... I INDEED miss The RYCHE. ; )

This is the 18th review of this song that I have seen. I have seen reactions from vocal coaches and ordinary fans. But, every single person is shocked when Geoff Tate hits that first high note. It is even more fun to watch someone who has never heard of Queensryche (Pronounced Queens Rike) before. I can guess you may not have a lot of experience with Metal (Especially Prog Metal), but you seem to be open minded, which is important when you are doing reactions. What you have stumbled onto is one of the very best Progressive Metal bands. In fact, Queensryche along with a band called Fates Warning are credited with starting Prog Metal. You have also stumbled onto the very best metal singer of alltime. If you want to hear more check out anything between 1983 and 1996 by Queensryche.

Pure talent . Geoff Tate for seven glorious years , for peak value , he was the best vocalist in music , across the board . At his peak , he possessed a five octave range . He could hit E5 naturals , a very rare feat for a natural born baritone . And please remember , his E5 naturals are sung in full voice , not falsetto. Incredible.
Another thing that is not mentioned , is how Queensryche compositions were written in such a way , to showcase Geoff Tate 's extraordinary vocal range . The jumps in pitch and octave range.
Very reminiscent of operas composed by Mozart . One opera: The Magic Flute .
    An exceptional vocalist.

Didn't know what to expect when I clicked on you & yr reaction, but Queensrÿche guided my click. Very glad I did. You're interesting & engaging, & watching your face break into little smiles of appreciation here & there as you watched was priceless. I first saw Queensrÿche in '86, touring their then-new album 'Rage for Order' (still my favourite album of theirs) & was blown away, especially by Geoff Tate's incredible vocals & the guitar & drums of Chris DeGarmo & Scott Rockenfield respectively. They followed it with what is one of the true great concept albums of all time, 'Operation: Mindcrime', in '88, a work that genuinely needs to be heard in its entirety by anyone who understands good music. If you want to listen to more, I suggest 'Gonna Get Close to You' or 'Walk in the Shadows' from 'Rage' or 'Revolution Calling', 'I Don't Believe in Love' or 'Eyes of a Stranger' from 'Mindcdrime' (have to say, tho, the tracks from 'Mindcrime' might leave questions unanswered as they form part of the story & are being taken out of context). I drifted away from them after their following album, 'Empire' in 1990 ('Silent Lucidity' & 'Jet City Woman' are absolutely outstanding tracks from this disc, MORE than worth a listen) but rekindled my interest in them with their 2019 release 'The Verdict', the third w/a rather good new vocalist Todd La Torre, & am now exploring their back-catalogue. In 2007, they released an album of covers by bands such as The Police, Peter Gabriel, Black Sabbath & Pink Floyd, called 'Take Cover'; their cover of Floyd's 'Welcome to the Machine' is one of the greatest covers, let alone of a Floyd song (all imo, of course) ever; If you know the original, PLEASE give it a listen, even if just for yr own pleasure.
Anyways, enough rambling. I really enjoyed yr reaction, & look forward to more. You got a new sub, Blondie.

Queens Rike. Say it as one word. Being a teen of the early 80s, I've seen Queensryche many times and they never failed to please. They were one of the few bands that actually sounded better live than on studio albums. I'm thinking Deep Purple, Pink Floyd, Rush, etc. Early Nightwish reminds me of Queensryche's stage production. You should check out End of an Era with Tarja Turunen. The last live album with their first vocalist.

(BTW, pronounced more like "Ryke" or the german word "Reich", I suppose.) Geoff Tate is the best there ever was.
Many moons ago we went to see them on tour in the winter, then waited outside in the cold to see if we meet the band, and Michael (Wilton, guitar) peeked out invited us in where it was warm. Got to meet the whole band and even the singer who sang Mary's part in Operation:Mindcrime! Best album ever, highly recommended. It tells a story from beginning to end.

Pretty much anything off of Operation Mindcrime is a winner, plus others from their catalog, like Silent Lucidity, Jet City Woman, and Queen of the Reich.

They had one of the best vocalists in rock at the time in Geoff Tate and an amazing drummer in Scott Rockenfield. I saw this incredible band perform live many decades ago!!

Pronounced: "Queens Rike". The back up singers were singing "Take Hold", can easily be mistaken as "hey hoe" lol. Seen them in concert 5 times from 1986 to 1991 before Geoff Tate left the band in 1992. Just about every song from Queensryche is that level of vocals. Every song in their catalog up through the album "Empire" is outstanding. You can't go wrong with any of these songs: Lady Wore Black, Queen of the Ryche, Walk in the Shadows, I Dream Infrared, The entire Operation: Mindcrime album, Best I Can, Empire, and I'm probably leaving out 10 to 15 other songs, but you get the picture.

Operation Mindcrime is the best album ever made. Must listen to it from start to finish. I've seen Queensryche 6 times... one time was at the House of Blues in Chicago... with Lita Ford. Best convert ever, they played Operation Mindcrime from beginning to end. Geoff Tate's mother was an Opera Singer, and he has a 5 active voice.

Oh yeah one of the best bands of the 80's. MTV had a contest send in your basement tapes and of course Motley Crue beat them and queens right came in second and then I think Scandal was like third. Try the song the lady wore black. That was off their first EP there was only 4 songs on it. Then try something later called Silent Lucidity and see the difference

In the first 30 seconds or so, he covers two octaves. From D3 up tp E5. like it's nothing. Opera singers don't bounce around like that. It would scare the crap out of them. It's amazing singing and he does it with little effort or thought.. He's one of the great singers. Placido Domingo, couldn't nail this song as Tate does.

Hi Georgia, Love the new section opening you added in....so here we are - Queensryche [ rhymes with bike ] - Brilliant ! Loved this group since my 20's. You will have noticed by now the wee mention of "Operation Mindcrime" in the comments. Lol .... Much as I would love a reaction to tracks from it, I think should you get this at some time in the future that you enjoy the experience of the whole album. It's a brilliant story of brainwashing someone to kill - a priest. For once enjoy this one album for yourself....There are plenty of other albums & tracks you can react to by this amazing group.....eg; Empire / The Thin Line / Della Brown, just a few examples as there really are so many...Take care, Byee X Jim
