Springtime in Suffolk is the best time IMHO (I live in Ipswich)! Can't recommend cycling in Ipswich though: readers from the future might like to get the short connection to Westerfield, which will drop you just to the North of the Big I (familiar territory to anyone who's done the Dynamo). From there it's due East to Woodbridge (or you could continue on the same train to Melton). Any carnivores reading this should definitely visit 5 Winds Smokehouse & Butchery at Melton station: the sausage rolls are amazing; fresh out of the oven they are heavenly. Alternatively, from Ipswich you could head to Felixstowe (same line as Westerfield or similar riding distance as to Woodbridge) and get the ferry over the river to Bawdsey, but do note the ferryman likes a pint, so best to time your visit accordingly... From there you can meander through the sticks to pick-up Jake's route at Snape.
This brings back nice memories of getting lost on these country roads when I use to go birding at RSPB minsmere and Dunwich Heath back when I lived in Suffolk. You should wild camp next time instead of rushing back to campsite at dusk
Thanks! Would like to try wild camping at some point but I do like the safety blanket of knowing I have a water top up point / facilities / somewhere I'm not going to get told off after the end of a ride. One day though..!
Great video, love how happy you all are. The journey looked lovely too. Suffolk has never been a place I’ve thought of visiting but it’s the second mention I’ve seen recently so maybe one for the future.
I loved it so I'd definitely be interested! We missed a few places we wanted to see, like Thorpeness, so would be great to be able to go to them. Any other highlights you'd recommend?
Orford and Framlingham castles, Woodbridge, Orfordness, Thorpness (as you say), Minsmere and Dunwich Heath, Aldeburgh, Tunstall and Rendlesham forests... And you've hardly left the Sandlings.
Having looked at the route on Komoot, there are several miles where it is on private land with no right of access for the public. This makes things very difficult for us local MTB riders who are trying to foster a good relationship with land owners. Perhaps you could amend the route to follow the PROWs. The countryside is not a free for all, go where you like place...........
There was one section we accidentally went on RSPBA land (near Snape maybe) where cycling wasn't permitted and tried our best to get off of it when we realised. From memory everything else was completely fine and legit. Unless there's somewhere specific you're referring to?
@@JakeMay The Komoot route is the worst compared to your actual Strava route which itself is pretty grim, the most notable being: Route cross Woodbridge Golf Course, the whole length of the section from the B1084 through the Chillesford Lodge Estate all the way to Orford, the RH turning off the road at the edge of Tunstall Forest towards Snape Maltings + the back-loop beside the river, two excursions off the Sailors Path to Aldeburgh, an excursion off Saxmundhan Road just before the mini roundabout in Aldeburgh, the route across farm land off the top of Thorpeness Common, route through Vale Farm and Nuttalls Farm near Frostenden Corner, most of route between Sotterley and Shadingfield by Shadingfield Hall, whole of route through Rookery Park golf course. All those areas mentioned are private land with no right of access for the public. Do you actually use an Ordnance Survey map for navigation or do you just "wing it" and go where you like?
As you point out original the Komoot link was not an accurate reflection of where we rode, and many of the specific points you mention above we went nowhere near in the end - I've changed the Komoot link to make that clearer (not sure what went wrong there). There was one occasion we realised we weren't allowed to be cycling we did our best to get off immediately, and the rest of the time we were conscious to be polite the whole way round, aware of where we were riding and any shared paths etc, and didn't come across any problems. We obviously don't want to affect relationships between local riders and private land owners. I was actually following a friend's route on this occasion so trusted the research but will be more careful next time.

I recognise quite a bit of that route. There's plenty more to see if you decide to go back.

Sounds great! Loved the bit between dunwich and Southwold, some of my favourite cycling that I can remember!
@@JakeMay The Dingle is fabulous for native wild (unhybridised) daffodils in spring.
@@peterleffler2062 I can imagine! It was pretty gorsey when I visited, but I'm not complaining
