  • Hi folks! I'm back with my first discussion video in awhile, this time about my perspective on buying a foal with a bit of hindsight. Needless to say, I don't have many cons based on my experience 😂

    ABOUT US:
Me: Hi! I’m Kaitlyn, a 27-year-old lifelong passionate equestrian. I have a normal 9-5 that I balance with life and having two horses (one mine, one not mine) in work.
Merlin: my pride and joy, a 2019 bay GOV (Oldenburg) gelding with a goofy personality and lots of potential. I started him gently under saddle in 2022.
Eve: a 2017 bay OTTB mare who is sweet as candy. I’ve been working with her full time since July of 2022 and am retraining her both in dressage and over fences. She is not mine, but I love her like she’s my own.
Bingley: the sweetest boy, my 3-year-old tricolour Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. He is goofy and absolutely chaotic.

I've been wanting to get another horse. I have champagne taste on a peanut budget. So I am considering a weanling for $4,500. I've started many but this will be different. I will grow old with this one. She will likely be my last and the thought of growing old with her makes my soul sing. I am 57 this year and I hope to get her in 2025.
It's been heavy on my mind and looking for someone to tell me to "just do it". I feel like you have. God led me to this and to your support. I am so grateful to you.

I am so happy that you found this video at the right time. Based on your comment, you would be a perfect home for her 💖 I bought Merlin knowing that he would be my forever horse, and I haven’t had any regrets. I too have a champagne taste on a peanut budget, and buying a weanling/yearling was the only way I’d be able to afford a horse like him. Wishing you all the best 🫶

Informative video! I am thinking about getting a young horse too. I don’t mind giving up riding for a bit but I don’t want to not ride for three years. Did you have another horse ?

I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to work with two other horses while Merlin was growing up, one of whom was Eve, an OTTB who I retrained from July of 2022 through June of this year. She belonged to my old coach :) I didn’t have the means to have more than one horse but I was very fortunate to be given opportunities to ride others’ horses xx

Thank you! He’s technically my third horse as I had a small pony and large pony growing up that I shared with my sister, but he’s the first horse I’ve bought and paid for completely myself. ☺️💕

And I bought him in May, so he was technically a foal ;) and I had a hand in handling him when he was a baby, so I count it. Hahah 😂

But you said at one point that his birthday was in July. 🤷🏼‍♀️
