    Hi Shawn, Thank you for the good video. It really explained the bell siphon well, and gives good tips for me to use on my system. My drain pipe was too large and I was not getting good siphon action, sometime it would work well, then it would just stop working. I work in Thailand, so somethings are harder to find here also.

    Who knew Kevin James knew so much about bell siphons? All kidding aside. Very informative video. I'm having trouble with my bell siphon and hopefully this will let me fix it.

    another very informative video by Shawn Paul....thanks for explaining this in detail, that was helpful to me as I'm just starting my system and I had no idea on the exact heights that were explained.

    That was great! Thanks for the video. Only thing that could have helped my hands-on mind more is physically seeing the way you build it. I understand everything, except how to make the little cap thing at the end of the siphon hose (the thing that you say gets buoyant and stops the siphon). All the best to you.

      Yeah that was a good explanation. Seems the drop of 12" would be more important than the horizontal 12" and not losing "prime". The cap at the bottom would seem to be preventing air from getting sucked in while allowing water to flow and then siphon.

    Great video! Just one question how does the cap float up and stop the siphon of the grow bed is filled with rocks?

    • @thehealthawakening
      @thehealthawakening  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Great question, there is a 4" sleeve around the entire bell siphon assembly to shield it from rocks. They won't be in that area.

    how should I scale this down to fit my tank?

    Hi Shawn, You said the water should drain in every 45 minutes. I just have one doubt. Doesst the grow bed enough time to absorb the fish waste in this much amount of time?

    • @thehealthawakening
      @thehealthawakening  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      45 minutes is the standard. You don't want fish waste in your grow beds. Your system needs a swirl capture filter and bio filter. Your plants use nitrates, this is produced in the nitrification process.

  • @patrickdyer1224

    Are you sure the cap becomes buoyant at the end and doesn't just cut the siphon off of the main tank? While this would yield the same result, I am curious to see how you saw this buoyant effect in your testing. (Very nice video)

    45 minutes to fill and drain a grow bed? Is that specific for large grow beds? Or does that apply for small setups as well?
    I have a 55 gallon fish tank and a 5 gallon grow bed filled with clay media.
    3/4 inch standpipe with 1 inch bevel
    2 inch bell siphon with snorkel
    The grow bed fills in 2 min 30 seconds and drains in 40 seconds.
    Should I be using a timer on my pump to reduce cycles?
