James - you have no idea how much I needed to hear this 'pep talk'! The heat and humidity this year have almost done me in physically. The only time it's been cool enough for me to be in the garden was between 6:00 and 7:00 in the mornings. Plus, my water bill was really high. I've now decided to totally redo how I'm going to garden - focus more on a fall garden and be glad my herbs, mints and cherry tomatoes were so productive this year. Just grow what I know I'll need and will use. Remember that I don't have to grow everything - just some things and go from there. Thank you and also love to Tuck!

What about using shade cloth and mulching to help conserve moisture. I watch another channel: Millennial Gardener, he lives near Wilmington NC. Every year his garden is burned up by July due to the sun and heat. He did a video on using shade cloth. It's on a simple overhead structure and he says it is much cooler under the 40% cloth. His plants thrive under the cloth. He did a video where he visited and interviewed James. James also uses shade cloth to a degree.

As a 69-year-old first time gardener, my whole garden was a learning experiment this year. The carrots and beets did so poorly that I yanked them up and replanted that bed with pickling cukes and zucchini (both of which are doing very well!). The tomatoes are growing so big and fast that I'm having to add stakes daily to keep them from tipping over. I figure any food I get this year (or any year, for that matter) is a blessing I'll thankfully accept! I'll spend this winter getting the supplies I've learned that I need for next season. Your videos are a big help, and my Yorkie, Murphy, enjoys seeing Tuck, though he gets a bit envious of the garden snacks. 🙂❤🥕

I’ve been gardening for about 3 years and in those 3 years every failure has prepared me for the next season. I came up with a solution for each failure. This year is so far my best directly because of this. I am finally at a point where my crop is exploding and I am getting a higher rate of edible food. When the animals were eating my crop I covered all my beds in deer netting and when the bugs started eating some of my crop or killing my plants I now spray them with a mix of Neem, vinegar and dish soap. Now I barely have any loss of crop. Those failures helped me get to my best year ever so far.

"half left", I needed this. We have had incredible rains here in Colorado. The hard part is there has been hail with it. My garden is full for the first time in years. I have finally learned year after year how to protect it from wind, how much to water in high altitudes, and when to plant. Two days ago we had downpour of rains, again, and hail. Punching holes in my beautiful kale, collards and winter squashes. It also took down my Holly hock - again, first time able to grow flowers out here on the mesa.
My garden is now covered with a floating row cover, and I am trying to tend them with hope. Picking the leaves and lettuces that have holes and putting them in our meals each day.
I love "half left". It lifted me as soon as you said it. Thank you.

James, The advice you give for growing tomatoes in NJ is perfect. Through the past 4 years I have learned the lessons you have taught along with my own trials and errors and finally perfected a tomato crop, almost completely disease free. I didn't have any Idea that my main problems were due to improper ventilation and too many leaves near the bottom of the plant. I have learned to only keep what is needed to shade the growing tomatoes never let anything touch the ground except the stem and roots! Don't over or under water plants. Keep them full of nutrients, especially nitrogen during the vegetative stage. BTW, I Never killed a single plant using organic fertilizer. My porterhouse are reaching almost 5 pounds. I want to enter them into a contest they look so beautiful. Almost a month on the vine and just starting to show signs of ripening. Thank you so much for all of your great advice!

Last year was my worst year ever. It seemed nothing germinated. So I fertilized and worm casted the beds and put them under leaf mulch and had my knee replaced. Was a bit discouraged but really excited now again and getting ready to sow my fall garden I have a vision in my head of a beautiful fruitful garden again 🎉

You might think that in my early 70's, after gardening for 46 years, I might be getting tired of it. Nope. I love it more and more. This year, I finally invested into heating pads and grow lights. I finally found out what is the best fertilizer for tomatoes, peppers and cucumbers. Three years ago, I started growing hard neck garlic. This year, for the first time, I decided to try growing sweet onions from seeds. I ended up with so many healthy looking onion seedlings that I had to ask my neighbour to let me plant half of them on his side of our chain link fence. I save seeds from most of my veggies for next year. I even save seeds from fresh bell peppers that I buy in the grocery store. I just can't quit. There is so much more to learn and to experiment with. This year, I started making detailed notes in my new gardening journal to remind myself what worked and what I would do differently next year.

I agree 100%. Last year was disastrously for us but we never gave up. It's all about learning and having fun at the same time. Learn from your mistakes. Period. Last year we had 5 cucumbers, this year we are feeding our whole family. Same with tomatoes, zucchini and other plants. Research, find out why it didn't work. Watch videos on TH-cam, like this one. By the way James Prigioni is our favorite gardener. Simply - he knows stuff.

I needed to hear this, James- so many weeks of drought here in Georgia, and invasions of squash and cucumber worms, which made me pull everything up and plant okra and beans (beans died.) We just couldn’t water things enough with the heat and drying winds. I said aloud, “Maybe I won’t have gardens next year…” and looked around like, who said that?
You’re right, the gnarled blueberry bushes were old faithfuls this summer; there are gallons of berries in the freezer.
3 days ago, answer to prayer -rain! 🙏

Very timely message! I was comparing my garden this year to last year, and I learned so much from my failures last year. I planted too closely to a black walnut tree last year, and it killed all of my plants about this time last year. I moved further away from it this year, and now they are thriving! I was ready to quit last year, but I'm glad I didn't!

The garden I started during COVID pandemic is still thriving even though I am not there to take care of it due to job situation, but I am so amazed at it still producing and self-seeding. The initial hard work really is paying off. Do not quit, keep put in what the garden needs and it will return your love.

I really needed this. It brought tears to my eyes because I thought as I was in my garden, "I'M GIVING UP NEXT YEAR!" Last year my garden was absolutely fabulous. This year it's a train wreck! Tomatoes getting blight or wilt, ready to give up on squash for good. Man, I have never seen so many squash bugs and borers and spotted cucumber beetles it's a daily battle, I check daily and have killed adults, juvies, eggs. The deer are eating and pulling up anything that is healthy looking--the unaffected tomatoes, the sweet potato leaves... Tthe only thing that looks decent is my flowers. Thanks for the words of encouragement! WE ALL LOVE TUCK! ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤

The last couple of years I have tried to grow food for my family and health concerns of family members pushed out everything else. This year after seeing your videos I started again. I was so pleased when I actually grew my own potatoes and a fantastic carrot crop! My tomatoes are just starting to produce- my hubby set up my trellising like yours and we have twenty tomato plants! Sometimes I get discouraged if I look at all that went wrong, but your video today came just when I needed encouragement!
