How Silicon Valley Bank & Signature Bank Weakened Regulations That Could Have Prevented Collapse

  • The collapse of Silicon Valley Bank and Signature Bank are the largest bank failures since the 2008 financial crisis, which prompted lawmakers to pass legislation to increase regulations on banks and other financial institutions. But during the Trump administration, a number of Democrats joined Republicans in Congress to weaken laws including Dodd-Frank, the landmark regulatory reform passed in the wake of the crisis. Executives from Silicon Valley Bank and Signature Bank were among those who successfully lobbied to weaken rules that may have prevented their collapse. The fallout from the bank failures now threatens to spread to other financial institutions, and the Biden administration has taken extraordinary steps to guarantee all deposits in the two failed banks and to shore up the rest of the sector in what many are criticizing as a bailout of rich bank customers. For more, we speak with _The Lever_'s David Sirota and banking law professor Mehrsa Baradaran, whom progressive groups at one point backed as the Biden administration's pick for comptroller of the currency, an influential regulator of banks.

    What happened to SVB is really scary, and goes to show that no corporation, however big, is immune to collapse. I have always had a deep-seated mistrust for corporations. I have plans to pull out most of my money, but don't know what to do with $ 350k sitting idly. I'd like to go into the stock market, maybe. Any ideas?

    Recession is most likely the result of an external factor. For the first time in decades, the United States is losing its clout as a federal reserve currency. They don't have any more economies to use to control inflation, and less money is being spent on stock and oil trading than in the past. They all lend support to the idea that a new multilateral world order is in the works.

    I feel bad for the lowest paid workers that may be affected, but not CEO's. A lot of them have created this abusive corporate pay structure where they are paid 300 to 400 percent the salary of entry level workers. Most add very little value. Respectfully, not sure that's fair to the shareholders. They do not make "bets" necessarily irresponsibly. Sure, they want to make money, but they also buy shares to support a new effort of a startup, for example, or support what a company does or produces. Greed can be a factor, but not always. There are millions of Americans, retired folks for example, who have their life savings wrapped up in investments of various companies. If a company goes belly up then there goes their retirements. The purpose of banking is to be the intermediaries between savers and borrowers. If you want a vaulting service, you can put your cash is a safe deposit box or a private vault. But you won't have check writing, ATM/debit and you'll have to visit your safe deposit box to get or leave your cash. Certainly you don't think banks will construct branch facilities, operate ATMs, clear your checks,

    • @northlandphoenix
      @northlandphoenix ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@daveb6963 FWIW, part of your comment appears to be missing, but I’ll reply to what you said, and what I think you were going to say. What you describe is just what exists now. It’s not good enough and its not the only options that could theoretically exist. Your options shouldn’t be subject your money to bank shenanigans and having to live in a society with medieval financial technology. Very few people want to operate purely in cash or bringing sacks of gold and silver everywhere. No one wants to have to stop by the safe deposit box every time they go to the grocery store. We live in a digital society. The vast majority of transactions are digital and most people are doing a handful of transactions a day. The vast majority of banking in your midsize community could be done off a single computer. Your bank probably already outsources the manufacturing, shipping, activation, and fraud detection involved with your debit and credit cards. Your bank probably outsources most of the digital check processing (the front end part, where checks are scanned and the dollar amounts are verified). Even the physical checkbooks I don’t really use are outsourced and shipped right to my house. Every gas station in America has an ATM to get cash if you need it. If you want to buy Gold/Silver you can go online, pay digital money, and have it shipped to your house. The same services could exist for cash if that’s something that’s desirable. I think a lot of the reason physical banks exist is that old people have trouble with computers and in 20 years that demand will probably disappear.
      You bring up the purpose of banks being intermediaries between savers and borrowers. In a fractional reserve system, especially one with very low reserve requirements, this relationship ceases to be meaningful. If I put in a dollar and the bank can lend many times that amount by creating money, what are they intermediating? Is there much of a difference between what we have now (very low reserve requirements) and zero reserve requirements? The reason to have reserve requirements is to ensure that the bank always has enough liquid money that I can go in and get my money. If you created a system where they are allowed to create money during the lending process (which they already do), but they weren’t allowed to spend my money, I don’t think it’d be functionally different than what we have now, but without there being the possibility of them misinvesting my money and me losing access to it, and needing government insurance to make me whole again.

    It was the FED's fault, because US banks are told to invest in bonds for there safety which they did. The FED then flooded the market with currancy which Milton Friedman said will cause inflation. The FED (Experts) told everyone not to worry as inflation rose saying it was transitory. By the time SVB realised it wasn't transitory it was probably too costly and late to do anything and there maybe many other banks in the same position which will go bust if there is a bank run!

With the Treasury Bonds inverted, they lost a lot of money. SVC knew it was happening, the executives sold their stock for millions of dollars, and then the Cantilon effect occurred. Those closest to the money got out way before those that went for the bank run.
