Vince Gill Has Something To Say To Critical Eagles' Fans

- Vince Gill has a somewhat surprising message for Eagles fans who say that the band can never be the same without Glenn Frey.

In a recent interview, the country legend says he understands why they feel the way they do - and he even agrees to a certain extent.
Gill and the Eagles both took their fanbases by surprise when they announced that Gill was joining the band in 2017. Both fans and the band members themselves had assumed the Eagles were finished when Frey died on Jan. 18, 2016, at the age of 67 after suffering complications from rheumatoid arthritis, acute ulcerative colitis and pneumonia. The band returned in a new lineup that included Gill and Frey's son, Deacon, each taking over part of his lead vocal duties in the iconic group alongside Don Henley, Timothy B. Schmit and Joe Walsh, and they've toured off and on ever since.
In an interview at the Musicians Hall of Fame and Museum in Nashville, Gill says he understands some fans' online criticisms.
"It's different, and it's not as good as the original," he states. "I don't sing like Glenn, and I don't pretend to. I see a lot of people making negative comments about me being in that band ... I get it. It's my favorite band, too. I don't want to hear me sing 'New Kid in Town,' but the other option is not possible. So I'm just trying to do my part to keep some great songs afloat."
Gill admitted that his gig in the Eagles is bittersweet during an interview with Taste of Country in 2017.

"Because Glenn was a great friend, and in my heart of hearts I wish I wasn’t doing it," he stated. "That would mean Glenn would still be around, but life is what it is and you just go do what you can do because of what happens. Those songs deserve to live on as long as they can."

I agree with Vince on this. He is not trying to be Glenn at all, and he's always been a great singer, so I think The Eagles did a great job of choosing Vince to fill in Glenn's shoes!

What a positive and talented addition Vince Gill has made to help carry on the Eagles. He’s not trying to replace Glenn Fry, he’s merely making it possible for the band to carry on as many other bands and groups have done. How generous of Gill to offer his talents and skill as an accomplished and gifted musician and vocal artist! Congratulations to the Eagles and Vince Gill. This was a great and unselfish idea. May you all prosper happily!
Vince Gill is a top end artist in his own right and a worthy addition to the Eagles. Nothing can bring Glen back and that is sad. The Eagles can continue and the songs can be heard, that is what is important now.
Saw the Eagles present configuration in Milwaukee in 2018 ... Saw the Eagles in Milwaukee in 1977 or so ... and enjoyed both shows in their own right. So-called purists who need something to gurgle about usually just like to hear the sound of their own voice. Both shows were superior. Vince is a superstar in his own right ... as are the Eagles.
Vince Gill without a doubt is one of the most gifted musicians on the planet. To have the gift of him being able to be part of the band with his awesome vocals would make Glen consider it a blessing. Thanks Vince for making keeping the Eagles alive.

Yes even Glenn who sang it after he left would tell you. He got a lot of crap but he always put what he considered was best for the band first even if it meant him singing lead in fewer songs. Henley practically became the vocalist by their last album.

I love the eagles my wife are long lived Eagles fans. We where devastated when Glen passed away. We’ve been to six live concerts in the Midwest being we live in Iowa. We have also been longtime fans of Vince Gill and I could not think of anyone better for the band to take on to keep the music alive. And one more thing if the Eagles decided to have Vince then who are we to question that decision. Further more my wife and I saw the Eagles with Vince Gill with Deacon in Chicago at the United Center a few years back and it was just outstanding. RIP Glenn you will never be forgotten 👍🏽👊🏽🇺🇸
I agree but Deacon is detracting from the groups polish and tightness. His voice is not of the standard of the groups history. Sorry to be so blunt .

Saw them in Atlanta just before the lock down best concert I've been to in my 62 years. Glenn Frey would be pleased by the performance. I saw Vince and was amazed how well he sounded and fit in with the Eagles.

Just saw them last night in San Fran, one of the best shows I’ve ever been to as well! Vince Gill was awesome! He sounded and played like fantastic, there’s a reason why he’s in the band, the Eagles wouldn’t just pick anybody to replace Glenn.

I saw them last night in Tampa and I thought Vince Gill was fantastic.
Absolutely glad Gill is a class act,they went to him knowing he was a friend of Glenn’s and would be respectful about performing all those classic hits,never truly the same but the fact that the songs live on,it works for me.

It’s not like the band kicked Glenn out of the band, the man died!!! I’m sure he wouldn’t want the band to quit playing because he died. I think he’d be honored to have his friend Vince Gill singing the songs, and keeping the band going, knowing what a talented person Vince is. Some people just don’t have a clue!!!
I am 77 and view the eagles with Glen as the greatest all round guitar based group of all time. I have played guitar for 60 years and know a thing or two about groups though retired. A sad loss but I offer the following suggestions. There is nothing to be gained by Glens son, the opposite. Don has lost his quality somewhat and Vince should take the lead in some of his songs.
Timothy could be given more in that regard too. A primary source of the bands strength was/is its harmonies and this ought be
maintained and even added too. Vince is a superb guitarist and more from him leadwise would also help. In short much of the bands tightness would be restored.
That said, though not up to the standard of yesteryear I live in Australia but would still go and see them if they came to Adelaide Australia. Sad, I know thats not going to happen.
Actually Glen would probably never envision the possibility of him being replaced. He had a huge and nasty ego.
I’m thankful Deacon and Vince are continuing the Flaming Torch! I was lucky to see them finally in 2018. Was an awesome night!

Been an Eagles fan since the beginning - and I am sooo grateful for Vince's role in the band. Some people will complain about the craziest things. I think Vince's response is humble and accurate. Life is life...we gotta roll with the punches. Keep singing, Vince!
Saw Eagles in Vegas Oct 2019 for the first time. I was blown away. One of if not the best concerts I've been to. I wasn't sure what to expect from Vince as I had never heard him before. Amazing!

I don't understand how anyone could Not like and appreciate Vince Gill. It has to be a person that has not followed his career. He has more talent in his guitar pick than many artists today...country, R&B or whatever. I challenge you to listen to his music before you criticize him!
@@mariehodge8626 - I absolutely agree with you Gill is a superb musician singer however the argument is not about him so much as it is about the Eagles band which are no longer the same since Frey's death - there's no reason for the band not to continue with their new member however they should try to include Gill and allow him to develop the band into a new direction using his skills instead of trying to copy the music of the old band - personally I believe Gill should not have joined the band and to see him trying his best to copy Frey is sad - however excellent he is his inclusion will continue to rub the old fan base the wrong way as it is showing right now
@@majorrgeek keeping the music of the Eagle's alive is what I think Frey would want and Vince Gill was a perfect choice in my opinion. Why are people so negative? A prime example is Journey. Steve Perry helped make that band but Arnel has filled that empty slot perfectly. He is a great singer and people had\has negative opinions about him. It kept Journeys music alive just as Vince Gill will the Eagle's.

No one is saying he isn't a great talent( well I'm sure some do). That's not the point here. Once you have an iconic band/member and that members passes that should be the end to the band as we know it. Personally I get both sides like Vince. It should be done at that point... As a music fanatic and not all music, music should carry on. I'm not a country fan for the most part but Vince did 1 hell of a job with this song. Haven't heard the other Eagle songs yet that he did with them.

Thank you Vince Gill, for keeping the songs alive. I prefer Randy Misner's Take it to the Limit " but sadly I don't believe that Randy can do it anymore. You do an excellent job of keeping the music alive, & I also (like a lot of others) think you have a superb voice!

Glen Frey is a legend without a doubt, but Vince Gill is also a legend himself. Vince brings something great to the Eagles, and does pay respect to Glen everytime he sings. Vince Gill is a class act.
What's amazing is that the other band members are completely happy with it regardless of what SOME others may think.
It's the bands choice and not the critics. Critics can stay home and play the original recordings.

I assure anyone reading this comment that no one outside of Glenn's family was more heartbroken upon hearing his death. The eagles got me through high school, breaking up less than 2 months after I graduated in 1980. I know exactly where the track on the eight track tape changed in the middle of Best of My Love, I wore out at least four cassette tapes of the Greatest Hits Volume 1, and have all the original vinyl. My kids were raised on Eagles music. At Epcot many years ago, the cover band Hotel California was performing at the pavilion. While other teenagers sitting with their parents looked bored and played on their phones, my kids were grooving and singing along with the band. I love the attitude Vince Gill has regarding his role with the band. I wish Glenn was still alive too, but her is not. If I have a choice between never hearing Eagles songs again or listening to Vince sing Glenn's parts, I will take the latter. Don't forget, Don and Glenn were master songwriters that were responsible for most of these songs, and I do not think Glenn would have wanted the music to die because he is not longer with us. One by one, we will lose the rest of the band. However, the true test of an artist's music is how well it survives after they can no longer sing for us. May the music Glenn and his friends and band mates wrote and recorded live forever.
I too lived and breathed the Eagles. They were my favorite band in the '70's. I have all the original vinyl albums also. What struck me about your comment was the fact that one by one, they will leave us....... none of us are ready for that, no one could have forseen Glenn leaving us. But their legacy of music will live on forever

Kevin Myers I seen them live with Vince and they were brilliant although Glen was good they sounded just as good
I was lucky to see them at Wembley Stadium, London, UK in June 2019! Whilst some people didn’t know who he was, it didn’t matter, his vocals did the talking so to speak and the crowd were very appreciative of his vocals and guitar ability, which us true country fans know he has in abundance and then some ! It was a great blend of both Vince and Glen’s son Deacon … Vince has over 20 Grammys for crying out loud ! It’s not like he’s some novice singer ?! Just enjoy the music whilst we can I say 🙏🏻
I'd have to think about big money, but other than that, I am seriously considering taking a long trip from my home in southern Illinois to see them in Dallas next September. After watching several fan videos on here of past shows and then their 2018 show at The Forum that was shown on ESPN back in the summer, that is looking more appealing to me. Two other big factors in my thought process are the fact that Dallas is the closest city on the 2021 tour list and also the possibility that they might decide to call it quits again. Looking back, I think I made a big mistake choosing to see Kenny Chesney over the Eagles when both acts came to Busch Stadium in St. Louis. Don't get me wrong, Kenny was good, but I think I would have really liked that Eagles concert, even with the little glitch that happened.

Vince Gill is amazing! Vince isn’t looking to be Glenn Frey! Vince definitely fits right in. Above everything, he’s a great guy! We gave him an ovation for at least a full 2 minutes! Let’s appreciate the fact that The Eagles found a way to keep their amazing music going. Just seen them 3/26/22 at PPG Arena in Pittsburgh. And let’s not forget most are in their 70’s and still got it!! Joe Walsh can play a mean guitar at 75! Vince Gill has a great heart and he's doing what he loves to do.
I just saw my favorite band last Saturday at the Baltimore Arena and Vince killed it. I am 62 years old and did not get to see the original line up but Vince did do justice to Glenn Frey. Also just got back from Nashville and stood in the circle for the second time knowing Vince performed here and I am so pleased to stand where you stood.

What better a voice to add to the Eagles harmonies? Henley wouldn’t have asked him to join if he didn’t think it would compliment the Eagles and thrive. Vince deserves this opportunity as well. I saw the Eagles with Vince Gill at Citifield a few years back. They couldn't have found a better fit! His vocals sounded fantastic, and he's a terrific guitarist as well.

Saw the Eagles in Dublin June 22 with Vince and Deacon performing. I am so glad they are keeping the music alive. Vince's performance of "take it to the limit" was breathtaking and emotional. Glenn would surely have been proud.
There is no reason for Vince to be apologetic in any way for performing Glenn's songs. He is helping to keep the Eagle's music alive, all the while doing a damn good job in the process. I think we can all agree that if we were deserted on an island somewhere and could only have one album available, please let it be one from the Eagle's. Thank the lord for Don, Glenn, Tim & Joe, you guys have done an excellent job picking musicians to perform with you for decades now. It is good to see Deacon & Vince in the mix.

Vince Gill was the perfect choice. Vince was originally a country rocker too, singing in Pure Prairie League. He is an awesome musician too and also sings Take it to the Limit very well. Much better than the Eagles calling it quits. I saw them in Orlando and they were awesome.

As a musician myself, I would find it an honor (If I had Glen's talent and success) That my surviving bandmates continued on with an Artist as talented, humble, and just a good person as Vince Gill is. In my opinion I don't think there's a better choice but Vince to keep the memory of Glens contribution to the music world alive!!!

I couldn't think of anybody that would be more suited to join the Eagles. It was hard for many of us to lose Don Henley and Glenn Fry it was hard for all of us. But with wanting to keep the band touring Vince Gill was a Dream of another member to support the band and the history.
I have never been a Country Music fan, but Vince Gill was & continues to be an immense talent & has made an enormous contribution to the Eagles story. Long live Glen’s memory. His legacy is in good hands.

Just Vince Gill in Vegas on May 28, 2022. Vince Gill was AMAZING. Stuart Smith ( I thought it was Don Felder!!!) and Vince, both taking lead guitar along side with Joe Walsh was killer. Everybody in their current line up is great. Timothy Schmidt and Don Henley just crazy good. I was hesitant going into the concert, but I just loved every second of the concert. I almost cried multiple times. So glad I finally got to see them live.
I wish Don Felder were still in the band, but Steuart Smith is pretty good. I went on October 16, 2021, and they sounded amazing, as I knew they would.
I think Vince was the perfect choice... that man is no glory seeker, he’s all about the music.

When Glenn Frey passed, Henley said it was over. Obviously, he changed his mind. That’s his right. If people don’t like like it, they don’t have to go to the shows or buy the album. To me, it’s not the same band, but Vince Gill is an incredibly talented guy and seems like a good fit. GF’s son seems to be holding his own, too.
Sure he had the right but the way he backtracked and made it seem it was only because Glenn’s family suggested Deacon joined it was most likely bull. He could have just said nothing and it would have been better. This is greed plain and simple, no going around it.

@Vince Gill I have listened to it for the last 20 years off and on. I enjoy country rock, and really enjoy your work with the Eagles. You have nothing to prove to anybody.
The Eagles were a different band when Meisner and Leadon left. Frey was a huge reason they both left. But it was freys band and his decisions. The Eagles have made a living off their past success as a lot of musicians do, nothing wrong with it. They are still good with or without past lineups.
It’s hard to replace Glenn, but if anyone can, Vince can!!

HOWEVER, GLEN would want his music, his legend, his voice to live on...so, VINCE GILL IS A GREAT "addition" to THE EAGLES!! I just saw Vince with the Eagles here in Vancouver. The show was just amazing. I was looking to enjoy the show and each and every song and that is exactly what went down.
Gill is the perhaps best addition to the band for Frey.No one can take Glenn's place but Vince will fill the void nicely.
