Jon, if you think veganism does not cause global warming, insect decimation, and excessive use of water resources, think again (and maybe look at some science). Agriculture of all kinds on the scale it has to be done to support us is the problem. I get so annoyed with people who want to pin the problems we have on "the other guy". There are too many of us living in ways that cannot be supported in the long term (including vegans). I would be paying more attention if you were proselytizing about radically reducing our use of plastics, or converting our yards into habitats that actually support a few species (check out Doug Tallamy's videos for this). We all must do the best we can to take care of our soil, our air, and the plants and animals that feed us. We need to consume less of materials that do not readily convert back to the earth. We need to think about what our role is in the ecosystems we live in. Why are we here...I hope it is to do more than to scrape the planet clean for a fresh start...without us.
If anyone at this zoo, claiming to have their priorities on saving animals through research, isn't vegan, then they are a hypocrite. Animal agriculture is the leading cause of climate change, far more than the entire combined global transportation sector. I appreciate that people have their hearts in the right place and I'm certainly not suggesting you are all bad people, but it is extremely counterproductive to all life on earth to participate in the mass extinction that meat-eating culture causes. Pollution, deforestation, climate change: all are directly caused by supporting animal agriculture. Please continue to do work in the name of the animals by not only saying you love them, but by demonstrating it with your choices. Go vegan and save approx 1100 gallons of water, 20lbs CO2, 30 sq ft of forest, 45 lbs of grain, and an animal life EACH DAY. That is a decisive and direct impact we can all have to help the animals and planet we say we love. Thanks.
