Hi, not a negative, but if the buttons look cheap, but the garment and change the buttons. Fabric stores have a wall of buttons. Being the garment with you to get the correct size of button.
Sewing on a button is easily done by hand. I promise. Watch a TH-cam video of how to sew a button.

Both of my grandmothers and my mother were elegant, fashionable ladies with impeccable classic taste. I don't think I ever saw them wear jeans, athletic wear or sneakers. They often switched the buttons on items to brushed or matte metals that look expensive. They taught me to wear only natural fabrics such as silk, cotton, linen, wool, cashmere and leather. Such a valuable life lesson!

I had a wool/poly blend coat that I swapped out the plastic buttons for metal ones which were engraved with a generic shield/crest emblem. Instantly made the coat look like it was $100. People have asked where I got the coat and did not believe me when I told them it was $35 on clearance at Target, and that I spent 10 min sewing on $8 worth of buttons to upgrade the look. My next coat will be all wool, tea length and I'm going to sew it myself. That way I can get a perfectly tailored coat with all those high end tailoring details for just the cost of fabric and buttons.

That's fantastic!!!! You should post photos and sell on etsy if you get a lot of compliments on it! If you're interested I think that would be great- people are willing to pay a decent price for something that is beautiful. You can package it nicely so it can feel like a gift to the buyer as well. Just an idea! :)

I agree with all the points mentioned by Anna... In fact, I try to invest only in expensive fabrics like silk or linen even if it means buying less because they last long and now i have a better wardrobe where I don't have to think a lot before wearing anything. So it saves time too. Also, the hack that i use is to buy such quality clothes from sale, so i shop twice or thrice a year only but have a better collection.

When my aunt, who was a Stunning beauty in the 40s thru 80s (now 96) shops with me online for patterns, her guideline for a no-go is when she says, "that pattern looks like curtains." :) She likes polka dots and stripes. Anna, I must tell you. I have been collecting your tips for quite some time now and I could not be more greatful for every single one! I have been slowly investing in garments that are linen and silk ect.. and on my recent trip I wore every single item and I felt so put together and energized. My favorite outfit was a blue linen dress with a belt around the waist. We were boating and even though I got splashed here and there I didn't leave the boat wet at all. We went right to dinner and I felt appropriately dressed for both occasions. Thanks Anna so much!

I don’t think I will EVER understand why people wear sweatpants out in public. And the only time I wear a hoodie out of the house is when I’m sick, and even that I’m trying to get away from, because I think it makes me look messy. I love that you mentioned NECKLINES! I can’t wear some necklines, due in part to my bust size. But honestly, most of what I learned about fashion (before I found your channel) I learned from my grandmother. She was a very classy lady, and the older I’ve gotten, the more she’s become my role model in many ways! I’m sure she would be thrilled to see my journey to becoming more elegant. She taught me to sew, set a proper table, and gave me the very important advice of: “Don’t wear too much rouge.”

Im 4'11" and there is so many more pants options to choose from when low-rise goes in style. Buying petite clothes has limited choices. But buying low-rise pants, then hem = perfect fit that looks tailored. Imo low, rise is a teen or petite style.

My pet peeve in fashion: I am older (70) and was very overweight. I have recently lost a substantial amount of weight due to an illness, but it seems clothing manufacturers have the idea that older women don’t care how we look as long as it’s comfortable! Nothing could be farther from the truth! We still want to be and look stylish, refined, and beautiful!

Modesty is essential for elegant dressing, I’ve always had a no-visible cleavage rule, I just prefer it, and a one of three rule: short, tight or revealing, I choose only one in an outfit, not all three. I love your tips, Anna. Your popularity has spawned so many imitators, mostly teenagers and those in their 20s, on YT. But, I value your ideas so much more because you are the only one who has actually worked hard to get all the qualifications and training that applies to an elegant lifestyle. I looked at a new “Elegance” channel the other day, her only qualifications were that she “helped over 1,000 women”, but at her age, she probably hasn’t even met than many women. Any creator can put together a few classic outfits, as we all can just at a glance, but the basic knowledge, experience and depth just isn’t there. I’m not going to support copycats, anyway. BTW, I think those earrings are too yellowish for your cool coloring, sorry.

Totally agree about the low-rise pants. Twenty years have passed and I have NEVER owned a pair because they look terrible on me. I also think hems can make garments look cheap. I miss the days of substantial hems. The clothing just hangs better (even when it comes to drapes, lol). I see so many garments with thin, bunching hems, drives me crazy!

I really wish it was possible to buy high quality fashion fabrics for projects in store. I remember being able to purchase high quality fabrics and buttons to alter or embellish items I owned when I was younger (mainly at offcut stores before chain stores took over), but these days fabric stores are lined with cotton prints or polyester with no chance of finding silk, let alone the 22momme like at lilysilk lol

I’ve collected lilly Pulitzer for a long time but you’re absolutely right, the color and fabric combination is everything. I scarcely pull for the knit looking items. They just look cheap in those bright colors. The best pieces I have are the silk items.

Since I discovered this channel I cleaned my closet and I'm practically marathoning videos. I loved the tips in this video because it made it even easier to separate pieces that I considered doubtful in my closet. But the scarf around my neck doesn't make me feel very comfortable. I travel a lot and most flight attendants wear it, I would feel like wearing a uniform. But I was so happy that my silk dresses are really just the way I feel when I wear them, elegant.

I am in my 57th year, not your typical demographic, but I just had to thank you for highlighting the importance of elegance. Remember that money can't buy class, and etiquette is simply making others feel comfortable and bringing order, not a weapon of the mean-spirited with which to disparage others. My great-grandmother did not have the advantages of wealth, but she was a true lady, gracious and of refinement. (Sugar is refined. Ladies are of refinement, she always told me).
My mother taught me to shop for garments at the Goodwill/charity shops in the affluent neighborhoods, and in the resort towns. I'm from the Mid-Atlantic region, where the money is older than the Constitution, by a century in some cases. One can find excellent furniture and interior decor in these shops, as well, especially at the resort areas, as there is a greater likelihood of beach house owners to redecorate frequently. I hope these tips from an old crone will serve you all well.
