You're right about the quality improving leaps and bounds, Tyler. We got a 2007 Hyundai Azera from my dad, and that thing was amazing. Unfortunately, it was totaled by a neighbor backing out of his driveway rather quickly, as he looked at his phone, and sent our car to sedan paradise. We replaced that car with a 2013 Hyundai Genesis 3.8, and have been as happy with it as we were with the Azera.
Back in 2003 the 3.5 was underrated it put out about 225 HP. Not much but it was meant for cruising. My buddy's dad had one and drove it until 350 k miles and had no issues.
I’ve always had a soft spot for the XG. From certain angles, especially from the rear, they remind me of a midsize Rolls-Royce Silver Seraph. That being said I love the late-model Genesis! They really are sharp cars with quite a presence.
I agree. My family used to own a 2003 XG350L. It was totaled at 195K miles; I miscalculated a turn and bent the subframe. Mechanic said it was over for the car. It's been 6 years, and I still miss the XG.
@@mikethespike056 Yes definitely, one of the most foolish things I've ever done. I think of the car often. We got the XG in 2011, back when the car was still common, at least in the Midwest. Nowadays, they're extremely hard to find in the Midwest, though not exactly extinct. One thing that stood out was how it didn't even have half the mechanical issues of my current 2005 Pontiac Grand Prix, but to be fair, the Pontiac was abused before I got it.
Great video, as always! What is really astounding is that the rear windows were cracked open slightly and it was still super quiet to the point that you didn’t notice. Wow!
@@Pube83 Are you saying that every manufacturer is wasting money developing and maintaining these build and price features on their sites? Seems like a cheap marketing investment to me. People don't go buy a car because they just saw a commercial about it, either, so are they pointless too?
It's cheap marketing as you said. But pointless to most consumers regarding the msrp prices shown on the manufacturer's website. Because only a schmuck pays asking price, especially on something like a Hyundai.
Had a 2009 Genesis Sedan when they were released. What an fabulous automobile. Also proudly the first person in the US to have a Cam sensor failure on a Genesis 😂
About the last thing you said. No, Hyundai aren't "behind the times" because they don't make SUV's. Hopefully this plague on the automotive world will soon end. If not, we'll be looking forward to a future where people have to go to work on bicycles.
The XG350 shared the same Hyundai Sigma 3.5L engine as Kia's first luxury car, the Kia Amanti, you should do a review on the Kia Amanti and compare it to the XG350
They were great cars. My family rented an Amanti back in 2004 when they first came out. We also had a rental XG, circa 2004-05. Several years later, we acquired our 2nd of two Hyundai/Kia products, a 2003 XG350L. We had that car for 5 years and put 40K miles on it. Unfortunately, it was totaled at 195K. Great Korean luxury car, I loved the ultra smooth 3.5L V6 and frameless windows.
Hyundai made the first gen Equus/Centennial in the 2000's for the Korean market as well as some Asian and Middle eastern ones. It wasn't sold in North America.
I own a new sonata and plan on sticking with Hyundai. Keeping my fingers crossed but if this car gives me better results over my old gm loyalty, I’ll be a Hyundai guy from now on. Just love what you get for your money!
Their emblem stealing game has progressed too. First they stole a Lincoln grill, then it was kind of like a Maserati, no they straight up robbed Bentley.
I just got a 2003 XG 350L for $300 with only 89,519 miles on it! It’s gotta few dings hear and there, but that thing is a real beauty!! God blessed me with a good buddy of mine that gave it to me! Only had to pay the $300 of fees and registration. Really is an amazing car, only thing wrong are the motor mounts, that’s it. Has endless power
I'm currently living in Korea and drive a 2005 Hyundai grandeur. Never thought I would say it but I love that car. It's taken me from dungdachoen all the way South to Busan with no issues. Wished I could take it back as my hooptie
I love my Hyundais. My dad gave me my 2006 Azera, and it's been great. I bought a 2014 Tucson. Great little SUV. The XG350 was kind of eh, but when they came out with the Azera, Wow. The Genesis is on a whole new level. I've wanted one since they first came out. The current G series even if everyone else is going SUV are awesome! Can't wait for their SUV! Thanks, Tyler!
I have had a 2007 Azera for the last 5 years 116k when bought, and 165k now, and absolutely love it. I've never had a trip to the Car Wizards's brother, I just twise the key and go. Huge trunk, very comfortable heated leather seats, infinity sound system, and it really moves! Given my experience, am not at all surprised how good the Genesis is turning out to be. I prefer having FWD in my snowy climate. 27 mpg on the highway all day...

Remember that Gold Digger song? It said something about winning a Super Bowl and driving off in a Hyundai? I guess that really isn't so bad anymore, is it?
PeugeotRocket “you will see him on TV any given Sunday, with the super bowl and drive off in a Hyundai” the joke is that the guy is a super rich football player but he drives a Hyundai cuz his ex takes all his money for child support.
One of the best cars that I ever owned was an XG350L. Once We put tires with stiffer sidewalls it drove much better. Very comfortable to drive, dependable, quiet, feature rich for the money. I really enjoyed this car and got a lot of compliments from random strangers.
In October of 2023, my wife daily still drives her XG350L (same color and model as shown in this video but, hers has 150,000 miles). My wife also owns a 2015 Audi A6, with only 25,000 miles but, she almost never drives her Audi (smile...smile).
My Aunt bought a Hyundai Pony back in the late 80's, that thing was hilariously bad. It was actually super reliable but it rusted something chronic at a time when most other brands had that sorted. I sold it for her in 1995 and by then at not even 10 years old it was basically a rolling pile of rust held together with oxidized paint despite always being parked in a garage. Now my wife and I are about to start shopping for a new family car, Hyundai are near the top of the list for us... it's an astounding turn around.
Yep, even a 2003 Hyundai Elantra drove like a baby carriage powered by a lawn mower engine. My mom traded her 92 Honda Accord EXR in for that pile of early Korean shit. She essentially gave away a smooth, reasonably quick & safe vehicle along with 20 grand CAD for a Go Kart.
I have some experience with XGs and they are actually surprisingly good and comfortable cars. Super quiet and Plush ride as well. The XG with the 3. 8 moved out smartly as well. In my circle they were referred to as the 'Korean Lincoln'. Speaking of which: Kinda sad that we can get a RWD v8 powered luxury car from Hyundai/Kia but can't from a Lincoln.
I had a Toyota with leather and memory foam. The issue with memory foam is in cold weather the seats are hard. One of the best seats without memory foam is found in the Toyota Avalon and Lexus seats. I will look at the Genisis cars because I like the old type soft seat, so thank you. I have never liked the European hard seats. A 1995 Buick Roadmaster seat was so comfortable no long distance fatigue.
Really strong in the motorsport categories as well. Amazing, to seemingly out of nowhere manage to turn the whole industry upside down. Attractive car to look at (opposed to the Honda Civic Type R; which under the layers of ugly is actually quite capable), superfun and nice sounding. Gotta give it to them, nice move! Wish up next for them is going after the likes of the Toyota GT86/Subaru BRZ, Toyota Supra GR/BMW Z4 and Mazda MX-5/Fiat 124 Spider. Those happen to be collabs. Now... Honda could use something as well... they have that legacy with the S2000, Hyundai only really got the earlier Coupe/Tiburon. Maybe we could see a new collab for a sweet sporty 2 or 4-seater (convertible) from them? Of if not Honda, maybe Seat's subbrand Cupra? Would be kind of awesome. Love to see them disrupt the market twice!
The Hyundai umbrella is awesome man. I've owned 4 Hyundai and Kia's, all ranging from 2005 - 2018 and they were all super competitive in features and performance per price at the time they were sold for their class. The 05 Optima V6 was kinda a cheap car forsure, but reliable as hell. But from 2006 onwards they really stepped their game up. My 06 Sonata V6 was amazing, never had any major issues, quality was really good for mid 2000s and that V6 had to be one of the most powerful in the consumer mid size class. That thing was great. My 09 Spectra5 SX was an amazing hatchback, the sport tuned suspension handled better than an Mk5 GTi and if had alot of features not found on a $16k car back then. My current is an Elantra GT Sport which isn't an Elantra at all, it's actually a hatchback they sell in Europe called the i30 and man it has the European quality forsure. It's legit like a luxury hot hatch with all the features, performance, and seriously good quality. There isn't anything else in its class that competes besides $40k+ GTi's or AMG CLA hatches. It has all the features those have and more. And I cannot stress the quality enough, it's great. Oh, and it has more interior room and hatch space than the CUVs on the market. Hyundai is great man!
Owning a Mercedes S class for 10 years, how many repair bills do you think you'd have to pay? A ton. Owning a Hyundai for 10 years, no repair bills. Just wearables.

I recall that in 1999 Kia had one of their U.S. tech centers in Farmington Michigan. Our back parking lots were connected and I was stunned at the one and two year old Kia vehicles that were rusting the hell out. They began covering them when they saw me taking pics. They have certainly come a long way. For that matter when the gas crisis of 1973 hit my wife parked her Cadillac Eldo and bought a top of the line Toyota Mark III wagon. The first time it rained the passenger footwell filled with water. The first trip she took to see her mother in Florida it dropped a pushrod in Atlanta. Yeah, they have both come a Long Way.

@@gtpcruiser02 That's not really a luxury car in the traditional sense. It was GM's response to the Germans, and a very good one, but it, too, contributed to Pontiac's demise. For 2003 model year cars, CDs were still pretty big. The iTunes Store didn't launch until April 2003, iPod were still expensive luxury items. While 2000 was the height of CD sales (according to the RIAA,) CD sales in 2002-2003 were roughly on par with 1998-1999. (There was even a slight uptick in 2004 interrupting an otherwise constant decline since 2000.) While aux-in jacks were starting to appear by then, they were by no means ubiquitous. CD changers were still a quite normal thing to have. Even Satellite radio was only brand new - with Sirius going live in July 2002, and XM in September 2001. Good old broadcast radio and CDs were by far the dominant means of listening to audio in the car when that body style launched as the XG300 in 2000 as a 2001 model year vehicle.

If the memory serves faithfully, the XG was actually an even older design than that. I remember seeing those, as the Grandeur (as in delusions of), back about 1999 in South Korea. They had a trim panel running across the back of the car between the tail lights with that name on it. Back then, I'd add that on the streets, they definitely liked their big flashy grilles. Go out on those streets, you'd see big chrome grilles plastered on Excels. Oh, and lots of those bead things for the seats. One of the managers at the KFC I used to work at had one of the first generation Excels. I remember the mylar stripes on the side that said, "Keep it jingling, baby!" . She didn't, ditching it for a Mercury Cougar. What the XG/Grandeur really seems to be is a imitation of the Japanese four door hardtop style, which with the last of that style, was also fake. Think Lexus ES 250 and 300, Mitsubishi Diamante, or the original US market Infinit M45.. For a real fake Town Car, consider the Kia Amanti, it even has the formal roof line. I also enjoyed your considering the effects of true luxury, vs. luxury being just a tacked on badge. After all, is a Mercedes CLA really a luxury car?

I agree. My family used to own a 2003 XG350L. It was totaled at 195K miles; I miscalculated a turn and bent the subframe. Mechanic said it was over for the car. It's been 6 years, and I still miss the XG.
@@hakeemsd70m that sucks
@@mikethespike056 Yes definitely, one of the most foolish things I've ever done. I think of the car often. We got the XG in 2011, back when the car was still common, at least in the Midwest. Nowadays, they're extremely hard to find in the Midwest, though not exactly extinct. One thing that stood out was how it didn't even have half the mechanical issues of my current 2005 Pontiac Grand Prix, but to be fair, the Pontiac was abused before I got it.
I have a 2005 Hyundai xg350l and it is an amazing car

It's cheap marketing as you said. But pointless to most consumers regarding the msrp prices shown on the manufacturer's website. Because only a schmuck pays asking price, especially on something like a Hyundai.
I swear to god I did a project on Hyundai in high school in 2009 because of how far they had come even by then! Love this.

My friend bought the first Excell... the only thing I remember about it was the interior smelled like kosher dill pickles.... right from the factory.
Here in Canada the Hyundai Pony came out first, around 1984. Excel followed a few years later. The Pony was about the size of a Chevette.
Hyundai made the first gen Equus/Centennial in the 2000's for the Korean market as well as some Asian and Middle eastern ones. It wasn't sold in North America.
Doug reviewed one when he was in Dubai.
I own a new sonata and plan on sticking with Hyundai. Keeping my fingers crossed but if this car gives me better results over my old gm loyalty, I’ll be a Hyundai guy from now on.

They don't give 10 year warranties for nothing lol.
GM will be gone within 10 years. Hyundai will still be around.
I’m driving my third Hyundai, they’ve been fantastic cars.
Hyundai is killing it, rode in a new Malibu the other day... GM continues to churn out trash
Their emblem stealing game has progressed too. First they stole a Lincoln grill, then it was kind of like a Maserati, no they straight up robbed Bentley.

@@MagicMagikarp1 Yeah, I remember what the song was about. I just forgot the lyrics since I haven't heard it in years.
Hyundai has definitely come a long way
I remember seeing the Sonata in a lot of Indian movies lol

I will look at the Genisis cars because I like the old type soft seat, so thank you. I have never liked the European hard seats. A 1995 Buick Roadmaster seat was so comfortable no long distance fatigue.
