- Sora Groupset: The Truth NO ONE is Going to Tell You. Shimano Sora is so durable and especially amazing if you are just starting out and want a road bike fully built up for under 1000 dollars USD. Shimano 105 is amazing if you want a durable groupset with more speeds and you are sure you will stick with cycling. Hint: YOU SHOULD. Stay vegan and healthy!!!!

I've got SORA myself and the only thing I wanna comment here is it's not just "nothing wrong with it...." it's f...ing GREAT!!!
It definitely has improved a lot, the redesign is even better than what I have. The shifts feel crisp and just good enough

A lighter bike is definitely motivating. Be sure to keep the carbs in and ideally avoid animal products and the performance will be a really good experience as well!
I have the same bike. 6 years. No changes needed. Ride 3-4k km / year. Durable stuff. If you are fit you can get KOMs on strava with SORA with no issues.
It’s crazy, literally weights about the same as SRAM Rival AXS

I've been riding on Sora for about 5-6 years. I've tried a few different chains (Sram, Shimano, KMC) and cassettes as well. Now I'm using KMC X9 chains which is the best option regarding the price, how it works and the way it is linked. Moreover, I've mounted Shimano Deore XT 9s cassette and now the whole drive works perfectly fine.
Im still running Sora 8 speed in 2024. Like the campy style thumb levers better than the paddles on my ultegra.
Dude thank you for the info. I am riding all SORA it’s my first mid range Group-set. It’s good man and I do a lot of climbing. It’s on my trek Checkpoint AL3
If you have full sora it’s honestly super great if you keep it maintained and tuned properly, I’ve gotten a KOM on sora components. With Ultegra or Dura ace you get better feel if that’s a good way to put it and a little less weight. But if you maintain your sora components better than someone maintains dura ace components you will have an advantage over their groupset
I would say Sora is more entry level than mid-range. My first road bike had Sora as well and it was good. Wasn’t as reliable as my Ultegra but it was nothing I worried about. I just had a couple issues here and there.

I know what people might think but I’ve had similar experience with Alivio groupset (entry-level) from 2013. Super reliable and durable plus very affordable. I don’t get how can it function so well despite lacking maintenance and not being so clean even.
Also I can vouch for the 105 groupset, it’s so amazing what you get for that price!
My alivio runs still smoothly, too and the small things I needed to fix were easy. Not even a lot of maintenance needed. I guess when I switch to a current gen sora/tiagra in a gravell bike it will be amazing
We got the same bike. Still love that I got it brand new for 60% off because my lbs stopped keeping road bikes in stock and just wanted to get rid of all the road bike inventory. I didn't need a road bike. But a $400 brand new trek 1.2...alright I need that!
That’s an incredible deal, the Sora works great and just make sure you change the shift cables after about 3000 miles so they don’t snap on you

You don’t buy a Ferrari, do school runs and super markets runs and expect it to last as long as a Kia would. And then say Ferraris are rubbish for school runs. I saw a video which boasted about (can’t remember his name) a pro cyclist who goes through a whole drivetrain EVERY ride!!!! Wow. Vs somebody who buys and keeps the same bike for 5-10-20 years.
Top fuel dragster engines are rebuilt between every 1/4 mile run. Because they need to be. Karen never checks her oil and her engine will live a sad noisy lumpy life until it dies by the side of the road, or the garage convinces Karen to upgrade to a newer car. Don’t be like Karen. Keep your groupset clean. Keep your chain lubed, maybe even change the chain once or twice and the rest of the group set should last as long as the bike! Obviously not if you do 1-200 miles or km’s a week.
It’s all a great point brother, I’ve been told a general rule for changing chains is every 2500 Km or so
I have 2019 Sora 3000 ,it is very good with no problems.
Works very well especially for the money. A low stress groupset😅

Thanks bro. Great video. I have been using hybrid bikes since 2 years. Should I go for Polygon Stratos S3 which has sora gearset as my first road bike? Or is there any alternative at the same price range in 2022.
Thank you for the comment, I took a look at the polygon and they give you a full rim brake Sora groupset at a great price. I haven’t seen any other bikes offer a similar experience for that. The only thing I’m not a huge fan of is the S M and L sizes. I’m a fan of the specific sizes like 54 or 56 but you’re coming from hybrid so that complaint is most likely irrelevant from your perspective as a rider because of how hybrid bikes are sized so I would go for it! I get what u mean. I think like u too at times... only at other times after looking at a bicycle with better specs on the road over taking me, the urge to upgrade infested my mind & I did buy some along the way... & looking back, I spent too much... I still love my bikes but I regret not saving enough & I'm turning 40 soon.

As long as you’re out on the road that’s all that counts. Bikes are worth the investment no matter which one you get so I wouldn’t feel too bad, definitely better than buying a money pit of a car

I own a sora bike, I only really stay in 3 gears on the cassette 90% of the time and thats high, med and low. I'm looking for a cheap tiagra group only because my sora stuff is silver and my frame is red with black forks. So I want a black group.
That’s usually how it works, once my chain was skipping gears on a certain part of the cassette and it’s because I ride in those gears most of the time so they got worn faster so I needed a new cassette. That’s just something to look out for with maintenance. The Tiagra is definitely a nice upgrade with aesthetics and everything though. You get an extra gear too!

Good points. For a newbie- what do you think of the AL3. It's aluminum but 1/3 the price of the next level up- all Carbon SL5. Ironically, they both weight about the same (~22lb'ish.)
The SL5 has the 105 vs. Sora but I am not a professional (at all- weekend warrior!) Would the ride be that much more quiet and smooth on the SL5 ($2k smoother?) I think at least the fork on the AL3 is Carbon. If I could get a pre-owned AL3 for around $1,000 for my first "real" road bike, that seems like a good value.
Honestly it depends how much you’re going to be riding. If you’re doing those 70-100 mile rides you will definitely notice the benefits of the carbon and iso speed. Endurance bikes are not “bikes for old people.” They are for riding long distances and keeping you comfortable. The worst feeling is feeling how harsh the road gets towards the last 20 miles of a super long ride. I’m saying this and I’m 20 years old, don’t listen to people at your bike shop that may tell you that you don’t need an endurance bike because you’re not a senior citizen or something like that. You become more sensitive to the vibrations of the road after long mileage. That being said the 32 mm tires at 70 psi will already keep you super comfortable and the cable disc brakes are WAY easier to maintain than hydraulic ones. So honestly if you’re doing 20-60 mile rides I’m sure the AL3 will be an amazing bike!😃

I really like the AL3. The higher end bikes are nice but I'm not trying to be Lance Armstrong. I can't justify spending over $1,000. I saw a 2021 AL3 online for $745- seems like a great price but it's in somewhat rough shape (clearly dropped.) Even at MSRP $1,3xx it's a decent value and way to get into the Trek ecosystem. I would not mind maintaining hydraulic brakes or electronic shifters. In a past life I thought I was going to be a mechanic- worked on cars and friends motorcycles daily so I enjoy that type of work. It's actually very relaxing. Swamping out some brake fluid and pads is a cake.
Since you seem very knowledgeable I have a couple of questions if you don't mind.
1. Does cycling end up hurting your back - all that leaning over and bouncing + I'm older now.
2. How easy is it to fall off and get really hurt?
I had a bad concussion a few years ago and it literally has taken years to get back to ~90%. I really don't want to go back down that terrible road again. That's why I think I would stick to paved park trails- minimal car traffic. We have a really nice and large area like that near my house. I could probably get one of those bike airbags too. Ironically, I grew up on dirt bikes and stayed pretty safe- but when you get really hurt once it makes you more cautious. Also, my balance and vision was effected so I am not exactly the same as I was before my mTBI.
Back pain is caused from improper bike fit. Definitely invest in bike fit, it’s like super important for road cyclists. About falling off and getting hurt I would go for clip in pedals. Now that sounds like it would be easy to fall over with those but it’s the opposite. Going up a climb it keeps you attached to the bike so you won’t fall off and hit your shin on the pedals. As for unclipping, definitely either hook the bike up to a trainer or have someone else hold you in place and practice clipping in and out several times. Also don’t clip in on a weird surface. Keep it on tarmac so you can get momentum and get going and un clip both feel if you come to a stop cuz you can loose balance and fall over that way. (Save that for the pros) As for the road I understand your fear of cars and I definitely recommend riding on those roads to gain confidence. However, you can run lights on flash and the cars will be guaranteed to see you. That’s almost more important than a helmet but definitely still wear a helmet. I’m on the ATV’s and dirt bikes sometimes too so I completely get the connection!
@@swanauto47 unclip both 😂 I had to read that twice but brilliant advice! Leave the 1 unclipped to the pros until you’re clipping affluently. Made me laugh out loud. I use my left (I only run flats) foot and I could so see myself falling towards the right at a crowded traffic light. Damit. I knew I should have unclip both.

Dude I picked up a Korean road bike frame today equipped with Alexrims R500, and FULL shimano Sora. Even the hubs, cranks, everything. Carbon saddle with carbon rails. I paid 200!! And the lady delivered it! Crazy deal

@@swanauto47 I’ve rode it several times now and it’s my first time riding a full Sora bike and WOW. Thing shifts so damn smooth sometimes it’s hard to tell if I even shifted 😂

Dora is a fantastic Groupset if your just starting to ride and not sure if wanna invest a lot at the beginning. If you don’t pick up big miles it’s perfectly fine.
Can i upgrade my sora groupset to any other recommended group set?? (like those cheap chinese groupsets) i dont have the full sora tho...
I would recommend a tiara possibly, it comes in a 10 speed and it has a really nice finish
I don't like sora ,I've had problems with my front derailer slipping internaly,I will switch to my og shimano 105 from 93 still works flawlessly
Honestly that can happen with band clamp front derailleurs. I will do an update to this video as well
Reliability is the key. If you buy a bike its not always you will race everytime... I have a shimano 2300 anyway but it doesnt bother me as long as it works for me. My friend has pinarello f12 but for sure if we ride together its just a casual ride. Youll not ride 40km/h everytime. And if we ever ill be drafting behind him😆. For me, 9 speed is my edge like if i upgrade it will be sora and thats it. If someone may say that I need an 11-speed, ill ask him to sponsor me and i will put his name on my jersey lol...
I just moved from a bike with Sora to a bike with 105. The shifting difference is like night and day.
The Sora was good but the 105 is far better. I think the only best next step is DI2.
I agree, don't listen to the bullshit marketing hype, I have a bike with Sram Eagle GX 12 speed and it is terrible. I am going to convert it to Shimano as soon as I can.
I totally understand, the Sora is good but Ultegra is like insanely good. If you want to buy a bike that will be reliable and you can do everything you want with it Sora won’t stop you. Unless you are loosing Strava segments by a couple of seconds if that makes sense. Or if you’ve turned into someone who feels the difference and likes the luxury and feel of a certain shift.

I believe so, you just need to make sure it’s a longer cage GS rear derailleur or get an extension

You would have to take a look at the wheel and freehub, some of them are only designed specifically for 9 speed

i tried the sora and 105 bikes at the cycle shop and couldnt tell the difference, the shop owner looked at me queer and i was embarrassed into buying a 105 bike.
I have 9 speed S.Sora dude now 6 years I’m still using no changes I’m running 200kilometrs ones a week
Or you can get full 105 for $900 with a lesser known brand name on the frame.. Or go Sora on a less known brand frame for way less.

Honestly unsure right now. I remember the schwinn fastback was a good deal for around 1100 but with disc brakes that may have gone up.
@@jahsun7172 if you live in asia, just pick best local brand, you will get full bike tiagra with $800, and 105 rims fullbike with $1000. Or carbon toray 800 bike with sora for $850.
I have a bianchi with a sora groupset and I fly from Shimano 105 even DI2 , it was never with the set it’s with the rider
Thanks a lot for the great content. Thinking to buy a Canyon Endurace 7.0 AL with rim brakes. It contains full 105 groupset and costs 1200 euros. Do you know any bike with similar price with full 105 groupset which might be better that Endurace 7?
Not off the top of my head to be honest. If you can get one I would go for it, rim brakes are awesome and I would definitely snatch it at the opportunity 😊

Yes I believe you can, they have a 2x and 3x sora which should be good if your bike is really loaded up. Just be sure you have the correct amount of chain and your drivetrain dialed in properly

I've got a Vitus gravel bike with Sora 2x. It has a 30-46 chainring and an 11-34 cassette who means this fat, unfit middle-aged bloke can ride up hills😊👌
Through i probably will recommend changing out the chain if you are usong that for 5 years

ya, unless you have a six-pack, you don't need to pay more for a bike that is a few grams lighter. Upgrade yourself before you upgrade you bike.
Facts but once you weigh sub 140 lbs and ride a 20 lb bike a 16 lb bike feels like a supercar
@@swanauto47 lol man I haven't weighed 140 since I was 16 (30 now). I'm 5'10 175lbs, I could get down to the low 160s if I was Boxer level body fat %. I enjoy doing pushups and pullups too much to ever be in the 140s again. But it doesn't matter for me because I just ride for fun/fitness. I still like having a light bike because it makes it easier to carry it up stairs and load it in and out of my car. I was going to buy a aluminum bike but I saw a 2008 Jamis Xenith SL with ultregra groupset and aluminum rims/handle bars on craigslist for $750. Bike weighs 17.5 lbs. The deal was too good to pass up so I jumped on it. Only needed a new steerer tube plug and a $20 bottom braket service at my lbs.

Finally somebody said it! 100% agree on the sora group set. I knew it was super durable after a few kms. Sorry I'm 100% a meatatarian though haha
It’s been a good groupset and is very durable for my winter bike. I do prefer the shifting and ergonomics of Ultegra after using it for a while though and I’ll be sure to do a follow up video soon

Absolutely, the 9 speed stuff is no joke these days and I literally rode one across New Hampshire. Just make certain your drive train is tuned properly and you cables are lubricated with tri-flow for example

Sora R3000 is perfectly fine. I ride all sorts of things: Ultegra, 105, SRAM Force, and now GRX Di2. They’re great. But they make you appreciate how good the more modest sets are.
I have most of a Sora group on a shelf, having come off an upgrade. It’s about to go back into service on a bike I am building out of leftovers. I’m looking forward to seeing how it does on a low-end gravel build.
There are lots of options for gearing with sora so it should be very good, I noticed recently how good 105 was for such an inexpensive groupset. It feels so similar to my Ultegra groupset it’s amazing
@@swanauto47 yeah but the problem is in my country, the minimum wage is 3k units and the 105 is about 9k units. Even if you have the money, you just can't buy it cause there isn't any available (EU and the US are more prioritised in terms of stocks). Gonna get the sora groupset. Wanted the 105 but it's waay over my budget. Yeah, totally not in despair 😃👍
