I often feel overwhelmed looking at the blank page and often find myself in a dilemma of whether to draw what I want or what I should. This helped me a lot, thanks, Jess. ❤
Every artist you admire today has been through that: overwhelmed by the blank page and often dissatisfied with the final outcome. It’s part of the journey, cliché as it may sound.
I feel like your dance history has made you a much better artist. I know you work very hard at your craft, and this is why you are so good at what you do. I also think the dancer in your, sees things others might miss. You understand those small movements and gestures presented in dance, and you draw them so beautifully. I started learning anatomy only recently, and for me, having spent many years training (running, cycling, even archery), there are body movements I notice more. I appreciate certain movements and how the body moves, because I have seen those things with my own body through that training.
All your words and tips are so inspirational, thank you for sharing with us! I'll always admire your flowy art style. Your drawings and thoughts are so beautiful and deep, meanwhile I was sketching a cat driving a vintage car while watching and listening, nodding along... 🤣
I think it's cool that you use just a simple ball point pen for these sketchbook examples. It just goes to show we can all make art, we don't need fancy materials.
Hullo Jess, I am just taken aback when you post such amazing videos! Your drawing techniques are superior in most every way! Thanks for giving so much of yourself and creating such dynamic videos are a talent that is obviously your own! Well Done!
Coincidentally, I went on an Urban Sketching outing yesterday morning and did a similar process, but without the benefit of your very cool 4 elements sheet. I had the Goal to finish my sketch in less than two hours. My Intention was to sketch directly with ink and to not make a preliminary pencil sketch. And also to work in a more loose style. My Subject was the town square where we were working. Materials were Fineliners and watercolor. I'm happy to report that I finished in about 80 minutes and achieved my goal and intention. I just printed out and completed your 4 Elements and Art Practice Reflection sheets, even though it is the day after. Thank you so much for sharing your process and practice. You've validated what I was doing in my head already, but I think writing it all down in advance will reinforce my practice even more. I'm especially looking forward to using the Reflection sheet. Writing it down preserves what happened instead of just fading from memory. You're the best!!!
One of the reasons I always come back to your videos cause you are one of the artists I look up to.. Always feel like drawing after watching your videos and even end up drawing along with you. Love your work and creativity! Thanks for everything Jess!
hello Jess, I have discovered your videos not so long ago and you are so inspiring and you motivate me to draw a lot more, I wanted to say a big THANK YOU and also I love the way you speak, I am french and I can understand you very easily. Thanks for all your videos, they are amazing
Feel inspired when I see your videos, and this one remided me of Stephen Travers Art videos. Staying loose, while having a goal in mind, and staying composed enough to reach your goal is a balance art in of it self. I hope to get to the point where I feel comfortable making this loose style, with negative space. Anatomy is something we can study for years, and finding the style that resonates with you, even longer. But consistency, practise, stepping out of your comfort zone is of great value to step up your art. Keep up the great work, and remember to smell the flowers in between. 🎭
I literally enjoy your all videos. Most importantly after watching it I feel like i want do draw something. You gave such great tips and inspiration. It helps me a lot. thanks Jess ❤❤
I was working and watching TH-cam videos, and suddenly I just saw your new video on my feed, I felt so happy and clicked on that 😍 now I'm enjoying the video ❤
Truly wondrous...hadn't watched til now bec ii ordered the anatomy book...yr 4 steps of clarity simplified my focus & confirmed by intent to learn blind contour drawing ... ty.
I love the fluid movement in your figures. It's like your skills at dancing somehow transmit to the page! I need more practice with my figure drawing as it still looks stiff and the proportions a little off.
I just want to say that 19 seconds ago has got to be a record somewhere 😂 Absolutely gorgeous video Jess! Your cinematography is always impeccable and videos like this are so inspirational and helpful! thank you❤
Bic 4 in 1 is almost all I draw with anymore. Just purchased a 24in drawing tablet around 6 months ago and its literally collecting dust. Had fun with it when it had that new car smell. Then the novelty wore off. Glass will never compare to how paper feels and just having that tangible object that you created. Nothing makes my nieces smile more then when I give them a picture they watched take form. I watch as various Christmas/birthday gifts get almost instantly forgotten but something that I drew on an envelope or paper bag get treasured.
@@gabrielhawk I know they exist. No I don't want to give them a try. I also know rubber tips exist to give more friction. I also know there are felt ones that do the same thing. If you want to give those a try......
WOW!!! WONDERFUL drawings! and cool! I didn't know you were a trained dancer. (I knew you enjoy dancing... but I didn't know you did ballet and ballroom dance.) ❣😃👍🏼✌🏼
I love your drawings. I always look forward to your videos, especially when it comes to sketchbooks. 2 questions : how long on average do you need to make one drawing? And when is your next video with colored pencils? Bye from France
The figures that you draw are AMAZING 🤩 They really spoke to me, almost brought me to tears...almost 🥹...I hope I can reach your level of figuredrawing one day. Is the sketch book from traveler's Company as well , what type is it ?
Wonderful Jess. So encouraging 🥰thank you. Quick question, how long did you spend doing your sketch book spread? I’m lucky if I get a good hour without interruption. 😅
Hi Jess, I am a new follower of yours. You said you've found sketch references on Pinterest. You've probably used those figure references that look like a wire frame showing the contours of the limbs and torso and the head . . .? I have printed many of those and put them in a 3 ring binder., I find them to be very helpful.
i dont know how or when but at some point art stopped being fun for me, sometimes i am able to pick up a pencil and sketch something im interested in buts its hard because i dont like my style right now, and want to improve my lines. I also enjoy using pen, i find the shading more satisfying.
I carry a multipen just like that everyday to the dayjob. Never really thought about using it for a spread. Maybe a new goal for my schetchbook. Love the dancers! The real question is...When is Jess gonna break out the spray cans?
I had that same biro pen as a child, it was my favourite and it exploded 😭 it was so sad, you're making me want to get another now but what if it happens again hahah 😂
How do you keep the multi-pen ink flowing? All of mine seem to dry out very quick. Or something. They just start skipping so much I had to just give up on them and throw mine away.
Oh wow I love the sketch you did of the two dancers. (Third sketch). Where did you go find that reference photo? I have an idea for a drawing I want you to try using that image
Hey Jess! I love your drawings and videos, always makes me draw too! How about you making 100 heads challenge again, only this time funny dog faces? Or funny animal faces? That would be awesome...
How long do you think it takes before you can draw those dancing figures without a reference? Do you know the neurological exams to test Alzheimer's asks the elderly to draw a cube with no reference and no training?
I often feel overwhelmed looking at the blank page and often find myself in a dilemma of whether to draw what I want or what I should. This helped me a lot, thanks, Jess. ❤

Ok, as of today I'm using those 4 points because it makes so much more sense and I somewhat see it taking me out of artblock❤

There are some screen protectors that simulate the texture of papers if you want to give it a try

Now this is a sketchbook :)
I feel deep things a lot. Sometimes dreams and emotions get on the page.
What a fabulous video. You are so inspiring!! May I ask…What table easel is that & what size?
