I need to buy this as I’m a big fan of outtakes and demos plus I like reading booklets. I have the 2 CD Deluxe edition with the Escher Demos CD! That CD is Revelation! All those Acoustic versions of classic White album songs! Amazing!
This was something I meant to make a video about... like a year ago! I almost think I might have filmed it but never published it but can't remember. I don't have any of the deluxe sets on CD except for Sgt. Pepper. However, that's a terrific set. Apart from that, I can only speak about the vinyl box sets which I'd put in this order (worst to best): Abbey Road > The White Album > Revolver > Let It Be. The White Album is my fav Beatles album and the Esher demos are outstanding... but that's about all you get extra as far as the vinyl goes. I ought to pick up some of the CD sets really.
You chose as the Best box set just the one i don't have 😂😂 , i have the 3 cds package with the album remixed and the esher demos. The pepper one, which i have, is complete too, it has posters, dvds with video content, the singles included (SFF and PL) and the box itself is awesome ( replica of EMI tape box )
Finding the vinyl version at Walmart for only $50 is probably one of my favorite new albums I've ever bought, especially with how overpriced most new Beatles vinyl is.
My only issue with the white album set is not including the 1968 singles remixed especially after they included so much of strawberry fields and penny lane on Sgt peppers it just seem strange to not include but still include outtakes.
I think they realized they goofed when Abbey Road didn't have the 1969 Single. The two boxes after that LIB and Revolver had the album remixed as well as the Singles. 3:21
The Capiphone project has The White and 3rd (Black)album.Hey Jude and Revolution,as well as a Hey Jude reprise are included,if Universal/Apple approve the Capiphone,catalog-spanning project. The mono mix for Revolution is the outake with no Hopkins piano,to match Revolution #1.(On the mono White/Black 3 album set.)
And yet they included outtakes from the Lady Madonna sessions, pre India. A few months earlier, but it was another era as far as Beatles years go. Hey Jude and Revolution appear on the new Blue Album, of course. However, one bugbear is that Hey Jude only starts to fade out early in order to fit it on a 45. It wasn't an artistic choice. So if you're remixing it now, why not leave it louder for longer?
@@paulf6973 I also think because the blue album was rushed they rushed remix of revolution. On the white album super deluxe John and George’s guitars are separated on the outtake and so I feel like Giles would have given us a much better remix then and also would’ve remixed hey Jude which they didn’t even do for the blue album it’s just the Beatles 1 2015 mix remastered.
Excelent review as always 👍 It's my favourite deluxe box set too. I'm still discovering little jewels in the music and in the book info as well. Incredible set.
I also consider the White Album box The Goat, I wish it had Revolution 1 Take 20 and the 27 minute slow Helter Skelter but they got so much else right I'm not really complaining. Second place for me is the Sgt Pepper box, big kudos there for having rarely/ never bootlegged Pepper outtakes. Let it Be gets a lot of points for having the Glyn Johns material but I don't think the remix is radical enough and there aren't enough rarities. Abbey Road is pretty good but for me missing a few key rarities, Something Take 37 and You Never Give Me Your Money - At The Hop Jam Version. Revolver has mostly a good remix other than She Said She Said, it's mostly an upgrade over the old stereo remixes and I love the rarities on this one. I just wish it still had a Blu-Ray.
Agree regarding Revolution 1 Take 20, which is a fave for me. For my White Album playlist, I substituted Take 20 for the recording released on the White Album. For my taste I had to speed up Take 20 by a semitone then create a fake stereo recording of it on Garage Band.
I agree with you. So far the white album has been the nicest one. Maybe I'd like to see Please Please me with the live at the Star Club tapes cleaned as they did with Get Back + stuff from the BBC sessions.
The White Album is the only Beatles box set I've bought as it's my favorite album by them. The books is excellent, the information on each song is like a compilation of 3 other books in its details. For the other box sets I've just downloaded the MP3s and put those to disc. For the earlier albums I think since there is so little that we haven't heard and the albums were so short why not release 2 albums for 1963, 1964 and 1965? I wouldn't buy individual ones but those I would. And "Magical Mystery Tour" could be combined with "Yellow Submarine". And should there be one for "Past Masters"?
Hi Brian love your videos, I’m a Beatles collector as well. Love too see you do a video on your favourite remix and the sound quality of your original uk vinyl vs 1970s. Don’t know if you know but Harry T Moss cut the originals as well from 76 on he started to put htm in the dead wax. Rock on my friend best wishes from the uk 🇬🇧 ✌️
My only complaint with the entire set is that it’s missing the original stereo mix. The White Album was the first Beatles album where they payed equal attention to both mixes since mono was dying at the time, and so it’s historically important to preserve both. If you want a great release of the stereo mix, the 1987 cd is a flat transfer of the stereo master tapes and you can get it super cheap Other than that, phenomenal release. It’s either this one or Revolver for me!
I love & appreciate all the box sets. Definitely agree, the White Album set is also a personal favorite. The one I go to the most along with absorbing the book
I think I agree, the contender being Pepper SDL. White Album is the only SDL I bought 2nd hand at an extremely reduced price...because the transparent slip cover is missing, which I don't mind. I'm guessing RUBBER SOUL, despite rumours, will have at least as many outtakes as REVOLVER SDL, hopefully more. I'm always disappointed by the writing quality & breadth of research in the books, the writing always plays safe, there's nothing original about it, but I think the Pepper book was the best of them - - not by measure of graphic design, but by writing quality & research. The more SDLs on release, the more cursory/formulaic the books become.
I love Hey Jude version from this set. This is also my favourite super deluxe Beatles set. Mono mix was mastered however and mastering engineer figures at the end of the book. Here is my personal ranking of Beatles' sets : 1) WA 2) SPLHCB 3) AR (love the blu ray PCM stereo format which surpasses the CD) 4) Let it Be (great but I was disappointed by the lack of the rooftop concert; I would also be happy if they could include all the 4 Glyn Johns mixes et not one) 5) Revolver (great but missing blu ray ; I love the mono mix which sounds more dynamic IMHO than the one from the Mono Box set)
If you bought the US version you got a combination of 2 of the Glyn Johns mixes. Only the Japan box has the complete 1st mix. I know that’s not what you meant but Apple really screwed things up with the GB CD.
This is the best value for money, with the number of tracks and discs, and the quality of the book, course. Adding the EPs to the Let It Be and Revolver vinyl boxsets might be a nice feature for them, but makes less sense as a 4 track CD. In the case of Revolver, it takes up space where - I don't know - a Blu-ray might have fitted. But these are little grumbles. The remixes don't replace the mono or stereo as we know them, so they're a happy alternative. However, I still don't think any of these remixes sound as good as those on Yellow Submarine Songtrack, Let It Be Naked or Love.
Very good assessment, Brian. For me it's all about the out-takes. Unfortunately, the further back we go in the Beatles catalog, the fewer out-takes exist, at least that we know of. I'm personally not a fan of the White album, but agree it was by far the best package, and Let It Be the worst. I would love to see a box of the 1967 tracks, Magical Mystery Tour and the 67 Yellow Submarine tracks, and we know from the boots , there are lots of out-takes for that era. Please keep the great videos coming, and a big thanks for them.
Hey Brian … unrelated … Can you tell me more about that “30 weeks in 1963 “ album behind you in this video. Bottom right corner of your beautiful white record shelf. I’ve never seen that before. Do any of the tracks overlap with the BBC or anthology ?
For me Revolver edges out the White Album but just barely. One thing I’m tired of hearing is people crapping on Giles for his remixes. I personally feel that Giles has done a fantastic job. I go to the remixes or the mono versions when I listen to the Beatles. If anything we now have choice. So if you don’t like Giles remixes stick with the 09 remasters. They haven’t gone anywhere.
The "White Album" needed a remix. certainly more than Abbey Road or even Sgt. Pepper did. So has Rubber Soul remix been announced yet ? if not, for all we know, they could currently be working on Please Please Me remix or some other earlier album.
For me, the remixes sound good (in some cases, very good) on the individual songs, but the album as a whole doesn't have the consistent feel of the original stereo mix. Also, on the new mix of "Helter Skelter," Ringo's iconic scream ("I've got blisters on my fingers!") is softer than on the original, and it has lost its punch.
Great video! I do not own either of those box sets. I do have several copies of the WA and I have the demos. Might pick it up if I can find one for a decent price. I have a question for the group now. I'm looking for some feedback on lathe cut acetate reproductions of In Spite of All the Danger and Till There Was You. I found some mint numbered reproductions that look great and sound great. Took a chance on em. Has anyone ever seen em or have an idea on the rarity or collectibility?
Hi Brian, I think The White Album deluxe boxset is probably my favourite too. Re - Good Day Sunshine, according to both the boxset book and the Mark Lewishon recording bible all the outtakes were indeed logged but erased as they used the same tape each time they started recording. But, they could have given us an instrumental version of the song in the same way as the Trident material on the White Album boxset eg Savoy Truffle which would have represented the session, at least.
My box sets complaints .why are they NOT the same size & thickness to fit on a shelf.Revolver & let it be you pull out book & lps or cds left side .the other box sets they come out on right...Sgt pepper didn't make an album with penny lane & Strawberry Fields in the running order ? The white album could of been better with the 27 minute helter skelter. The apple labels on some are very dark to read. Out of the 5 box sets so far imo I listen to pepper or Abbey Road more. White album although I paid $250 for it sits on the shelf rarely its pronounced sss- sure demos not E sure
Martin ruined Wheeps, Birthday & Helter Skelter. Too much of this bass bloat that has plagued Beatles & solo remixes. One of the worst is Yer Blues. It’s meant to sound claustrophobic but Martin said nah, I’m gona do my thing. Unfortunately because of his name, he feels entitled to take liberties
