    Great episode. I love these two albums; the songs are brilliant and joyous and timeless yet somehow manage to feel intimate. Side note: I love the Capitol Records Purple Label, it's so retro. One day in the very early 60s your grandmother came home from shopping with a 45 that was on the Capitol Purple Label, Kingston Trio's "A Worried Man" that your father & I played & played.

    So much useful info in this vid that for someone like me who never bought Past Masters back in the day, it takes 2 watches to absorb it all. I doubt even Bob could take in all this in a single prowl. I didn't buy it back in the day because I was mostly ignorant of variations in quality of pressings - - I had all the tracks already & that's as far as my reasoning went. I'm playing catch-up now nearly 40 years later.

    I have a UK pressing that was part of a UK DMM vinyl box set from early 90s I believe

    Hi Brian, I have a 1992 UK pressing and it sounds very nice to my ears, in fact i'm going to pop it on this afternoon with a cup of tea cos i haven't heard it in a while. I also have the 2009 remaster from the CD boxset. Enjoy your copy! All the best from the UK.

    The original UK Past Masters was a crackle monster on thin vinyl. She Loves You on our radio station copy was worn out.

    Only have the Past Masters on CD’s. The mono Past Masters on vinyl is the ultimate goal. I certainly have enjoyed the phenomenal songs on these releases over the years…

    The Yellow Submarine tracks on Mono Masters are in true mono.
    The original Yellow Submarine album released in the late 60s had those songs in mono (type2)- ie a fold-down of the stereo mix.

    I played the hell outta the Past Masters CD's as a kid. I have the latest reissue of Past Masters on vinyl too, but Mono Masters is really the way to go.. sounds absolutely _incredible,_ well worth seeking out if you don't have a copy! 👍

    I wonder how the Mono Masters and the stereo issues of Past Masters compare to other vinyl Beatles compilation albums such as the German early 1970s issue of the Hey Jude compilation album or both the UK & USA Rarities compilations. Great presentation!

    The Mono Masters is so much better than the remixed red and the blue albums. It is the closest sound to the original UK singles with the dynamic punch that is their trademark. I liked the concept of remixing the red and blue to present a stereo mix that didn't have all the vocals on one channel and all the instruments on the other but I don't think Giles Martin was the right man to do it. He comes across as a nice enough guy but he definitely isn't his father. Peter Cobbin's remxing of Yellow Submarine is far more palatable to my ears.

      Peter Cobin didn't have MAL.

    • @aureliande2659
      @aureliande2659 8 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      @@danerd8978 Yes, and that was a good thing. He could work from the stems in the way they were recorded on the original tapes, so that gave him the best sound. He was limited because he couldn't isolate an individual guitar, say, and put it elsewhere in the stereo picture (as MAL allows), so he couldn't introduce gimmickry and had to stick to the originals. Yes, Yellow Submarine Songtrack is far superior to the 'modern' compressed and limited attempts of Apple and Martin to cater to contemporary understanding of music.

    I took out the mono masters the other night. Only a Northern Song and All Together Now sounded sooo good.
    Hooked my turntable up using a y adapter to get that true mono sound from my stereo ortofon cartridge. Have you done this before? Would be curious your thoughts

    I remember something about those 1980s CDs. It was a huge deal. Released in sets.
    The first set was the first four albums - all mono.
    Then the second set (starting with Help) might have contained the first Past Masters?
    Pretty sure Peppers was released by itself & I don't remember much else.

    Aren’t even the initial 1988 vinyl pressings of Past Masters (Vol. 1 and 2) sourced from the same digital masters used for their original 1988 CD releases? I was under the impression that the “Mono Masters” records included in the “The Beatles in Mono” box set were the only all-analogue releases of the Past Masters/Mono Masters compilations.

    • @MisterBiscuitsOfficial
      @MisterBiscuitsOfficial 3 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Yeah, generally all the pressings from 1988-2012 used some form of a digital source whether it was the original 1987/88 mixes or the 2009 remasters. Both the mono vinyl box set and red/blue albums from 2014 were really the first in a while to have all-analog mixes put onto wax.

    I bought the original "Past Masters" mixed by Wally and I liked it more than the copy I have (on Vinyl) than the Japanese version. I heard from Andrew, of Parlogram, the version of "Rain" that's on the German "Rarities" album is in true stereo. But, I found a copy and it's in mono (from Germany) so maybe he has a different version. I never found out if "She Said, She Said", from the German vinyl edition of "Revolver" is a different mix.

    Thanks for another excellent video, Brian. Essential lp, to be sure. Some of their best tracks are on these albums. Really lame, horrible title and front cover on that lp, however. They could have come up with something better, in both cases. Agree; the mono is the best version.
