How to solve the animation action figure problem (also, what's the animation action figure problem?)

This went a different direction than I was expecting, but that's telling of my focuses.
My idea of animation action figure problems is- if you model something like it's drawn from the front and then look at it's side, it won't look like how the animation's side profile looks. The artists are working from their imagination and that can conflict with itself in trying to bring that into 3D reality.
In 3d modeling for animation there's an unusual system I've seen used. Basically there's a sculpt for the front and a separate sculpt for the profile. The two sculpts morph from one to the other based on where the camera is in relationship to them.
But yes PVC is nice. They can probably pose it better than you and no joints and seams.

Even just for display, I'd prefer more articulation. I feel like that adds value if you can change how it gets displayed. Yes, the lines can be distracting, but that wouldn't be a dealbreaker for me.

For articulation, I don't understand why toys don't use the base idea that was used for the 4 inch GI Joe figures.
They had neck, shoulder, bicep, elbow, waist, hip and knee joints.
Every action figure I had as a kid, from TMNT to Batman The Animated Series, I always thought they would have been better with GI Joe style articulation.

I feel like there's also a lot of animated things that also just struggle to transition into 3D well at all. Ed Edd n Eddy and Fairly OddParents look kinda odd when people try to make figures or even statues of the characters. But even South Park, despite the super simple designs, looks "off" to me in 3D.

@@TheCrabbyArchives The Eds are indeed a challenge to make them in action figure form, same goes with shows like Invader Zim and Regular Show, i still remember Jazwares made that Rigby figure and looked very off.
It also depends how they sculpt the character because you always have them with the typical boring blank stare on every figure they release instead of making them show an expression of how the character reacts usually

PVC figures are just statues. Suitable as action figure accessories (ala the vintage Thundercats line), but not a replacement. I don't think articulation is any worse in animated figures than in comic book figures. I think the amount of articulation should depend on the nature of the character. Fred Flintstone doesn't need 50 joints.

    Always a reimagining going from a 2D to a 3D.
For me, as long as the character can hit their signature poses, it’s acceptable.
    PVC is ok too.

looking for a way to solve this problem myself and i'm leaning toward an internal articulated frame and an overall construction similar to a stop motion puppet. an effort to retain the unmistakable silhouette and say goodbye to visible joints.

It doesn’t bother me to break up the sculpt for articulation, to a point.
About minutes in you said about control with having more articulation. I have thought adults collect action figures not just for nostalgia and fun. It’s also to have a bit of control in a world we have little control in. Our little world of our own.

As a sculptor, animated is really tough to nail down, I find it harder than doing regular action figures. Some characters defy physical reality. I've spent so much time trying to get the silhouette of a figure right just to rotate it 90° and have to start all over again trying to find a happy middle ground.

It depends mostly on who makes them and how they turned out as action figures.
Some like Jada Toys had done well with characters like Chester Cheetos and seems like they are doing the same with their upcoming Scooby Doo line.
I think the other issues cartoon figures have is some having different designs, different build to why most toy companies don't try making figures of the latest cartoons because they are not toyetic enough

Let's be clear, we always expect articulation. It's the designers who make a choice whether or not to give it to us, and I suspect not giving batman knees has more to do with cutting costs than giving people what they want.

The issues vary depending on the style of the cartoon. Some 2D designs literally don't translate into 3D objects, as well as illustrative elements like flat colors or heavy outlines. Transformers fans get into a lot of debates over cartoon-accuracy, some feeling too much makes for worse toys, while others speak out against any detailing that did not appear on a cartoon model sheet. I feel the Masterpiece line toys of Beast Wars characters struck the strongest balance, as their appearance matched unusually well with the plastic-y 1990s CGI.

I think articulation in animation can be done well but it really depends on the design. Jakks Simpsons for instance have a lot of useless articulation in my opinion, yea the joints are there but they don’t really aid in getting the figure in any pose mostly due to the nature of the designs. On the other hand Jada toys Chester cheetah poses great and it seems like their Tony the Tiger and scooby doo figures will be just as good.

One example that bugged me a lot is "The Incredibles". Not only did they include the spindly limbs but they made them in 4.5 inch size. Which put me off buying they because they looked liked they would snap if I looked at them funny.

I collect toys and love the classic cartoon related ones. Yes, on their heads/ faces, many stylized 2d cartoons were “cheated” graphically to look appealing from a few angles that wouldn’t work in 3d. Mickey Mouse’s ears for example, and Popeye was drawn mostly 3/4. The toy industry has pretty much nailed the challenge; I’m assuming some sculptors now worked in animation, but early versions of the characters’ 20th century toys could be way off-model.

I kinda feel like The Batman's animators were in the wrong for giving Robin legs that wouldn't support his body weight. I could see stick figure legs on, say, a Nickelodeon cartoon. But I kinda feel like "Could they stand up?" would be a valid question for comic book-to-animation adaptations. Once you point it out, it just becomes distracting to even look at in-show. I don't know, am I wrong?

Enh, I've never minded articulation in figures of animated characters. Most of the fun is in posing them. I don't collect statues.
Palisades' Ren & Stimpy and Aqua Teen Hunger Force figures looked amazing, and I bought a set for the young lady I was dating at the time (now my wife), but they were so dang FRAGILE.

The Simpsons articulation is perfect. Jakks and jada have plenty of figures with stick legs with full articulation. Well done Jack Skellingtons all have literal sticks for legs and are fine.
PVC are not action figures. Theyre statues. The articulated Simpsons line look better than those cheap looking pvc.

If a figure has great articulation like a Marvel legends, then they must be posed on the shelf. What’s the point of standing them up like a soldier when you have creative control over the characters existence in your collection. If a figure has limited articulation, like a vintage TMNT or Hasbro WWF then the limited articulation was fine because they were dynamically posed. My 2¢
