The ion pulse missiles do not allow for any ship to be "ioned" for two consecutive turns because once a ship resolves the ion effect, you clear all ion tokens from the ship (even if they have 2 or more). However the new missiles are effective against big ships because they require two ion tokens to be "ioned."
Actually this ship comes from the old TIE Fighter PC game, the wings do not in fact spin. On the issue of the name, I've always assumed it meant "Defending the Empire" or maybe because it's so heavily shielded (in the old canon anyway).
Talking about aesthetics of this ship, I'm a little upset that the model designers put the two laser emitters below the canopy on the ship's body. The TIE Defender emits lasers from the points of the lower two panels, like a TIE Interceptor, where the ion cannon fires from the top panel. Just my addition to some background info for any repaint ideas!
When the Ion Pulse Missile hits and inflicts 2 ion tokens, I think they all go away after the next turn. I don't think you are ioned for two turns in a row. This is mostly intended for large ships that require two ion tokens to be effected.
The crew I play with does it as such; We remove Ion Tokens after the ship "activates". IE the ship will preform the white 1^ and then be able to continue the turn as normal (without move movement).
The only reason you'd want to give 2 ion tokens to a ship is if that ship is Large. because a Large ship only gets ioned when it has 2 tokens, not just 1. And all ion tokens get removed as soon as the ion effect gets applied by any of these tokens.
Thanks for another awesome and entertaining review! I would like to point out though that you can't put Flechette torpedoes on the defender (it only takes missiles), and you can't get double ioned (the rule card states that all ion tokens are removed after you first do that one straight). But some great ideas nonetheless!
Hi guys, another awesome review. The Defender looks great but I really don't get the pilot skill 1 card, this ship was the Empires finest and were only flown by the elite pilots, not academy pilots. It so be at least a 4 to match the Saber squadron pilot or even a 5, but not a 6 as that should remain reserved for the Royal Guard pilots...
They kind of explain this in the ship details. "Elite pilots" were usually skilled but sometimes simply lucky. Defenders could have been flown by pilots who had evaded death by sheer luck (or the force or whatever).
I think the reason behind this, that goes along with the theatrics of the game, is that even the most skilled pilot in the world is going to have a tough time flying a ship like this. If you're a veteran pilot in a Tie-Fighter you might get like a 6-8 pilot skill in this game, but put that same pilot in a Tie-Defender and he is going have a very tough time flying it even if he is very skilled because it is just more difficult to maneuver. To make the point more clear, take Luke Skywalker for example,he is a very respectable pilot, in an X-wing he has an 8 pilot skill because it's not too hard to fly but if he flew a Defender you could not warrant him having an 8 pilot skill because he cannot fly it as well. In the end I think Pilot Skill does not represent how well the pilot can fly a ship, it represents how well they can fly the ship that they are in.
Thanks for the videos! It's really helping me out! I now know what kind of ships I'd like to start with and learn. Very helpful! Keep up the good work!!
Rexler with an autoblaster. Roll 3 dice at range 1 but don't spend your focus. Any hits you inflict can not be canceled... spend the focus and they become crits. Very expensive.. and situational, but fun if you can pull it off.
They missed that predator makes saving focus easier. Rexler with predator will eat people. Even gets critts on Chewy. Defender is resilient and powerful, but expensive. We will see what happens when it is played more. I am betting it will rarely be seen as more than a 1 of in lists but it will fit in an interceptor type list as the front attacker while the interceptors flank.
Do you spend the Focue to flip ALL damage cards delt to them face up. im just going off the wording of his skill. "you may spend a focus token to flip those damage cards face up. That will make this ship 1st to kill vs a twin YT-1300 list. chwey will not like this coming after him when it has the Outmanover skill. 3 dice vs falcons 0 due to Outmanover. (or 4 range 1. or 4 at range 3 if it was to use HLC)
lyianx no as the falcons firing arc is still the v at the front used for fireing 2ndry weapons. As the the main gun is a turret weapon. I think it states somwhere the firing arc on all ship is the fron v. Just not sure where i read that.
Rexler with a HLC and Push the Limit should be able to do some major damage on most ships. Even if you roll badly after the target lock you still have a Focus and should at least be able to get a good amount of regular hits. Run him with a Black Squadron with Wingman and a high PS guy like Soontir to shoot their shields off and ships will go down.
The card on the right is not changed even after change transition when you talk about level 6 pilot. Card is still from level 8. Anyway, keep thous unboxing videos up. Big thumbs up.
Ah, no Antar Roat pilot? : D I would have giggled inwardly playing that against Wedge. Rexler seems like he would be better with a significantly LOWER pilot skill, getting to pick someone to attack when you have better odds of them having lower or no shields.
Rexler is amazing. How can you forget about the potential to deal multiple critical hits by turning the regular hits to crits? It seems like you guys just put him off without considering. Sure, shields and use of focus, but there are plenty of cards that ignore that type of thing. For instance, a missile that damages multiple targets. Anyway, I was blown away by that.
I get that you guys are in the business of selling the items you are presenting, but a little more honesty about the item is always nice. It's a bad ship. You know it's a bad ship. The meta reflects that it is a bad ship. Come on now.
Daniel Gallagher We record these videos as soon as a ship releases, and have no way to know whether or not it will impact the meta in a significant way. Ships that look great on paper often don't see play, and vice versa. Calling anything a "bad ship" in X-Wing is likely folly, though.
Daniel Gallagher Your comment is as ignorant as your assumptions. They don't create these videos to portray something that it is not. These videos are released around the time of the actual wave's release. They have no idea what the response it will have based on a meta that doesn't even exist in regards to it yet. I would recommend using your eyes and taking a look at the publication date on these videos before you make dumb comments. As far as your comment goes on it being a bad ship - It is not a bad ship. It is a GREAT ship purely for the fact of its stat line and upgrade potential. Is it pricey? Definitely. Does the meta "reflect" that it is a "bad ship?" No it does not. There is no mass statistical data to display that shows the win/loss ratio of Defender players with regards to their matchups. Yet even if there did exist a small form of data, then you would have to analyze the different matchups that it paired against and also take into account the skill of the player that they won or lost to. If a complete noob took a Defender to a tournament and lost to a group of decent players then it would be easy for them to say "wow the Defender sucks" when in reality they got OUTPLAYED. You also have to look at what flavor of upgrades both players took and also take into account the other components of the list of the Defender player. Finally, a little lesson for you in PR and business, or common sense for that matter. Even if this video was released 5 months after the release of the Defender and it wasn't being shown much play or had some statistical support to show that it wasn't doing well; Do you really expect them to say: "it's a bad ship. We know it's a bad ship. The meta reflects that it is a bad ship. Please go buy this ship. We are being honest about this item." ? Not everyone that gets into these games wants to play competitively. Plenty of players get the game simply because they love everything Star Wars and want to fly some cool looking, painted miniatures around on a table and have FUN.
LunchableSandwich Do you feel better now that you have gotten that out of your system? Jesus christ man. You need to remember to take your meds. I'm sorry but if you can't see the ship immediately for what it is (over-costed garbage) then you're likely a casual scrub. Games like this are won on the back of abusing the stress points of the games design. You want good stats , sheer numbers of ships and high impact effects for the least points possible. This is not a ship that allows for a player to spend their points in such a way. Most of us on the tournament circuit could see this from day 1. I'm sorry that you're too retarded to not be able to do basic game analysis or identify the inherent qualities of what makes things competitive calibre in this game. Maybe collecting rocks is more your speed.

i thought what was said was wrong, But the rest of the video is good.

Beau Boutwell Interesting! It's rare for these ships to not be true to form.
At 3:13 you are still showing Rexler Brath and not the one you are talking about.
It's because he's that good.

+Pablo Torres jr Great to hear Pablo! Thank you for watching.

wait did you forget it has a 4 white k turn?
You cray-cray, G-String!
G-Strings always are.

Great Video over all guys. Maybe you two can do some matches and record them. It would be good time.
Rexler is what Steele wanted to be, also great at punishing transports/tantive

Yeah! Every damage card that was just dealt can be flipped to a crit!
Aren't you technically in the falcons firing arc at all times? Given that its primary is 360?
lyianx no as the falcons firing arc is still the v at the front used for fireing 2ndry weapons. As the the main gun is a turret weapon.

You don't really want stress on a TIE Defender, as its Greens are all straight. :)
Yeah, that's why you bring the Black Squadron Wingman.
Morning duty. Address the fact that at 3:14 the card stays the same.
The card on the right is not changed even after change transition when you talk about level 6 pilot. Card is still from level 8. Anyway, keep thous unboxing videos up. Big thumbs up.
It did change, to the same card. Twice. It kind of swiped moved?
Nice Love how you advise how to use the defender 👍
great, ive been putting off buying this, now i have to get it. great job on the video y'all!!
+Seth Zorzi Thank you for watching Seth! We do have the Defender for sale at teamcovenant.com/store!

I wish you could use that and ion bombs. Man that would be sick.
Good thing the defender doesn't have the evade action, otherwise this would be the most overpowered ship in the game.
Arg! Read up on the tie defender wiki guys! Hahahah
But it's so fantastic to get wrapped up in the mystery!
this ship was one of the biggest let downs in x wing snd with the proliferation of low cost high hp ships with turrets practically make it usless
hurry post man
In space, every direction is down. Read Enders Game again.....
