I'm 61 and I only heard Gentle Giant this year. By chance I heard "The Street, The House, The Room" with the eccentric little fiddly bits and was intrigued. So naturally I've gone through the whole catalogue. They are absolutely amazing and I play very little else.

Some here have commented that Gentle Giant were way ahead of their time and on an entirely different level, which are very true...but they carved out and occupied their own patch, and they preferred it that way. As Derek Shulman said, "we create our music at the risk of becoming very unpopular"...most people viewed them as oddities, unfathomable intellectuals, or just plain weird; they just didn't get it. But those of us who did get it loved it and still love it all these years later! They were incredible and one of a kind!

    • @BarryWarne
      @BarryWarne ปีที่แล้ว +5

Their riffs are full of space, which was always remarkable. For a progressive rock band playing off-kilter grooves over polyrhythmic-odd-time-signatures, that angular space funked things up ~ 2:48 funk from all that space they put between beats. You could almost dance to it but you could always feel it. You could certainly twitch to it quite satisfactorily.

I think their cult level of fans has more to do with their music being more musicians'music than most other prog bands. Don't get me wrong, I also love more commercial sounding prog bands and that music also has its deserved place to be. But the intricacies of GG's music maybe responds better when you yourself are in some way making music . Not that not-musicians cannot like them: but for them it's most of the time an 'acquired taste', while musicians get their music more from their own experience.

I once worked the stage at the Paladium in NYC sometime in the mid '70s. There were three bands on the bill. Alvin Lee and Company of 10 Years After was the headline band, Gentle Giant was the second band on the bill and were just beginning to find their way. The third band was Columbia records attempting to recreate ELP in America. It was of course a three piece band called American Tears. My friend worked for them so we both ended up on stage for this concert and all three bands played two shows that day. One in the afternoon and a second that evening. I actually met the guys from GG and I smoked a joint with Alvin Lee while his drummer was playing a solo. It was a memorable day.

I’ve often wondered how carefully Derek crafted his vocals such that sometimes he sounded sharp or flat but it really worked and seemed purposeful. A sample like Way of Life is clear but something like this track - when he hits “today” in “same as in today” it’s noticeable to me - or am I mishearing! Anyway it’s a testament to his voice that I’ve never heard a singer in 3F or cover band come close to Derek’s original.

Yes it's been hard, going a long time
    And we're together even now.
Why do you ask? Surely you know it!
Isn't it clear just when and how.
    What can we tell you?
At the beginning had no direction,
    Any other way.
    After the fourth one, realization,
Finding our road, the same as if today.
Well we all hear, everyone, no-one,
Not to not say, we like a lot.
Want to be seen rock and roll music,
Don't take us something that we're not.
True it looks better, tide looks like turning,
So all in all we feel we are alright.
Yes we had troubles, much more than many,
Rather have none and do we think what's right.
What are your plans for the future now?
And can you say who does the writing then?
How did you get who gave the name of the band?
Now that he's gone, turn off our faces,
Wait for the new man to arrive.
Soon the same song, sung for the next one,
Saying our piece, though not alive.
    What can we tell you?
At the beginning had no direction,
    Any other way.
    After the fourth one, realization,
Finding our road, the same as if today.

Then you must have also seen the opening act, PRISM, which featured my stepbrother Steve Parker on bass. I hope to release the gig (soundboard!) someday, and I have two songs of Gentle Giant during soundcheck. The album Gentle Giant recorded in 1978 and up until they broke up, there's a special device for percussion that Prism's drummer John Rousseau built for them. Derek later produced some tracks for Prism (by this time they were known as Hands), and told them "by the way, you should quit playing progressive rock" ha ha! How ironic then that Hands music has been critically acclaimed and almost every review mentions how much like Gentle Giant they sound. Oh the irony.

@@1359401 IMHO they are both good, but not in the same league as the earlier records. I saw the Civilian tour (the last one) in 1980, and that material was even better live.

What's fun is it looks like Minnear is performing a real knock-out grand piano solo live in the room, even though we are hearing the record of course... Not sure about the drummer - maybe they all did it live in there after all?.. They did play it on tour back then...

    • @danpage79

Yeah, they did. It was a music video with the original album track back in 1976. This was before MTV. Many bands that were recording videos back then would make these promo videos with the band playing live and it was synced with the original track. Thus this video is lip-synched for airplay on TV music shows in the 70s. This was played on a show in the US called The Midnight Special. I got it off Giant on the Box DVD the first DVD, there are two DVD releases. Just go to the Gentle Giant website to buy.

Back in about 1980 I picked up a GG double compilation. At the time I remember I was trying to make sense of Yes’s Tales of Topographic Oceans but this GG was beyond me at the time.About ten years ago the penny dropped.I have all their albums now.Derek looks a bit like Paul Rodgers here

They would have gone down a treat at Glasgow's annual Celtic Connections festival. The Shulmans were a Gorbals family (infamous Glasgow district )and as their tribute to fellow Gorbals expat, the famous psychiatrist R.D. Laing, on their earlier 'Knots' proved, Glasgow has given the world so much more than sectarian violence.

    "Angry Giant"
This song takes the cake as being the most tense and abrasive in their whole catalog. It just shouts "listen, we're dead tired from this crazy touring schedule, composing this stuff in hotel rooms and rehearsing where and when we can, then record it and spew it out in record time. We're pretty tense. Here's some sandpaper."
    Still top notch GG, though.
Also, at 5:01, what are you laughing at, Kerry?

Derek Shulman thinks more on the business side of the music, he owns DRT music, home of death metallers and hardcore rock. This GG album "Interview" was at the middle end of their band. From "The Missing Piece" to "Civilian" was their change to shorter songs and more accessibility much like Genesis did for "And Then There Were Three". Thus, Derek also met Lee Abrams a radio promoter for the AOR programming which gave AOR Journey, Foreigner and REO Speedwagon constant airplay. They worked on "Civilian", gone were any prog sounds, but more straight ahead rock which failed miserably. I'll never forget the "Civilian" tour, people were scratching their heads, What's this?

About half of The Missing Piece is actually pretty good prog. Civilian is more hard-rock style, but still very good. The real stinker was Giant For A Day, which has only one or two listenable tunes on it, in my opinion.

The Missing Piece was their best work in my opinion, but many people didn't like it, thinking they'd deviated from their roots. But it's the most listenable album of them all. If it wasn't for the punk revolution at the time it would have done really well.

To each's own Larry. Gentle Giant is an acquired taste. That's the title of their second album "Acquiring the Taste". I didn't like them at first, then I took a second listen and fell in love. Their live shows were incredible. Now this the 70's so it is outdated and part of the baby boomer's area, but I still like listening to them. I know Larry you share another view and that is cool. This is no argument page. It's only rock and roll and the extension of it, and we like it.

Well, I must tell you that the reason why this sounds uncannily like the album is that this video is dubbed to the album version. Back in the 70's they did a lot of this for music videos so they could air on different programs.
