The reason them tenis rackets looked weird AF is they have an old contraption used to keep the wood stright in storage. It's a squareish wooden thing that bolts onto another of it's self, one either side of the frame of the racket, and pulls inwards, keeping the racket flat and stops it from being able to warp over time. It's used because old rackets were made of just bare or varnished wood and had a tendancy to warp with changing temperature and humidity if not properly constrained like that.
