A Real Blind Master Samurai

- Blind swordsman often appear in cartoons and movies and they are also very strong. But did such people actually exist? In fact, there was one famous blind swordsman called 冨田勢源 Toda Seigen (who lived through the end of the Sengoku period)
He studied his father's ryuha style (Tomida-ryu) and showed extreme talent. However, Seigen unfortunately suffered from an eye disease and became blind. Unable to follow in his father's footsteps, he gave the reins of the family to his younger brother and became a monk himself.
On one occasion, Seigen visited his lord's uncle and stayed for a while in Mino province (present-day Gifu prefecture). At that time, he was forcibly challenged to fight by Umezu Soregashi, (the swordsmanship instructor of the lord of the area). He first refused, but eventually he was persuaded by those around him to confront this arrogant man.
Seigen instantly defeated Umezu, a large man with a huge sword measuring 3 feet 4 inches (103 cm), by using a 30-centimeter-long stick he found somewhere. Hearing of this victory, the lord prepared many rewards to keep Seigen in his country. But Seigen returned to his own country without accepting anything.
Later, Seigen trained many great swordsmen, and according to one theory, he is said to have been the mentor of the great Sasaki Kojiro.

Longtime after hearing a man who fought the sword legend - Miyamoto Musashi, ..... Sasaki kyojiro loved him when I read about him

Hei shogo can you make a video about the social problems in japan and why a lot o teenagers are in depresion and some of them even comit suicide?thank you for your video.

Hi, I have been watching you for a very long time and thanks to you I became interested in samurai martial arts. Currently I am continuing the Nagagawa-ryu battōjutsu style in Poland. And I am a co-founder, probably the first in the world (based on my reconnaissance) of a group of completely or partially blind fencers. It is truly amazing what progress these people have made despite many adversities.
Record of Ragnarok taught me more about Japanese history than school 💀
We will learn more, there's like two more Japanese Fighters so.
Old blind man went John Wick mode to that swordsmanship instructor

Instantly! Zatoichi flashes in my mind.
As the saying goes there's always some truth mixed in with the legends and myth.
Exactly!
Just like this story though, because I would bet money that it didn't happen exactly like this. I doubt he just picked a 30cm twig from the ground and beat a swordsman in a real serious duel.
Especially because they say someone offered him a reward to stay in the region after this, but he left without accepting anything. This kind of unfalsifies the claim by making an alibi for the lack of material record of it.
Would be kinda cool if you covered some fact vs fiction in the Zatoichi series and films. One interesting episode had blind woman shamisen player Goze that was shunned but had no explanation why. Upon research I found out it had to do with her violating the Goze rules.
I think I know part of the inspiration for the Stone Hashira now.
I was going to say, IRL Gyomei?
@@TheWholeKitAndCaboodle same!
True i was thinking the same thing
I bet he was the inspiration for the blind swordsman trope, at least in anime, if not everywhere
“HELP HELP Some one call an ambulance
But not for me “
I would like to mention that being blind doesn't always mean being unable to see anything. Some blind people can make out shapes. I once had a professor who was legally blind, but could still make out what he wrote on the board.
Reminds me of when Tenchi's grandfather used a bokken to destroy Mihoshi's Space Police mecha in Tenchi Universe.
I only know him in movies or in the game 🤔 i thought he was just a mere fictional character, but after seeing this video he was real man
a real GIGACHAD
Fujitora is an absolute beast and an ideal man
Respect for him🙇♂️🙏
Bros observation haki on a whole other level
I love the Zatoichi character. This is dope
"A blind master with a stick beats an arrogant fool with a sword."
-Battousai The Man Slayer
Tabun
Admiral Fujitora uses a sword imbedded in a stick
" There's nothing I can't cut " - Roronoa Zoro
I love it when a trope like this is proved to have had at least one real life parallel.
In our childhood we used to think stick is a sword this guy took it to a whole new level
no wonder years later children in the park follow his teachings
Never underestimate the power of a random cool stick
gYOMEI?? IS THAT YOU??????
This is the anime equivalent of an 8 foot villain challenging a little girl and losing instantly
Blind swords men
"Fujitaro:uhh is that me
I doubt Toda would last very long in a fight with a real swordsman. I realize there were samurai who could detect when someone was near them and out of sight. But to be able to react to an attack without vision is highly unlikely.
But I do like the Zatoichi movies. I just suspend my disbelief for the duration of the movie.
❤ Zatoichi!
He could probably see vague silhouettes and moved based on that. He had no hesitation.
Surely after such a humiliating defeat the swordsman promptly spilled his bowels all over floor.
"You led me into this forest because I am blind. Is that your plan? Ha ha ha..."
i just read the part in Vagabond where Sasaki Kojiro (in the manga he is blind) defeats a swordmanship teacher using a stick, it is very interesting knowing the real story behind it
Never ever underestimate blind people. Famous musicians and actors also many many other out preformed absolute wonderful creators in their own right of trade who could still see. One of my favorite and who got me back to listening to music once again was Blind Willie Johnson. He was blinded by his stepmother at a very young age and died broke. But he is on the Voyager 1 space craft on the gold record for the human expression of loneliness. Thank you for the video!
Gyomei's father:
True
Now that is one great story of overcoming ones handicap to become truly mighty.
This is a freat bit of history! Thank you.
The stick was a holy sword in disguise with attack power +9999999.
I'm a blind swordsman. Thank you for sharing! :-)
I just had a glimpse of the probable inspiration for admiral Fujitora from one piece in the beginning of the video
He must be amazing blind master samurai and alot respect for the sword master
This feels like a literal anime story, they even got the legend Sasaki Kojiro in it 😭
“I am Melanie, Blade of Miquella. And I have never known defeat.”
Just a reminder, blind doesn't mean he saw darkness. He could have been able to see enough shape and movement to be an adequate swordsman
Is sasaki kojiro's story accurate in manga called Vagabond? And was miyamoto's story accurate in the same manga?
There are just so many different theories that it’s impossible to say that one story is accurate… it may be partially correct and partially wrong, no one knows😅
Thanks for all you do Shogo!!
Love the channel, Bushido/Ninja Culture & History
So here's some information about the great Toda Seigen. He was the a master of Chujo-ryu style with the short kodachi sword. Toda Seigen travelled various provinces in his youth polishing his skills his ultimate goal was to a create a style like Mutō Dori means to fight and defeat and armed man with bare hands. That's why he trained with shorter and shorter swords to attain such level of precision and agility but unfortunately he got an eye disease while approaching to old age he was unable to find such a style his goal is ultimately achieved by an another legendary swordsman named Yagyu Sekihusai who founded the concept of Mutō Dori by order of his master Kamizumi Hidetsuna.
And it was no written record that Toda Seigen was the teacher of Sasaki Kojiro on the contrary Kojiro was said to be the student of Kanemaki Jisai one of Seigen's student. Though some texts strongly believe that Kojiro did received a word of teaching from Seigen during his child hood. As its simple because Toda Seigen was the master of short sword and Kojiro on the contrary wielded a long sword.
👍👍🙏🙏
People like benkei and seigen just makes you think if japan was the anime we so desperately needed the entire time
I am one with the force and the force is with me
The fact that the first picture look like what inspired Fujitora who is also a blind swordman(samurai) from one piece simply mind blowing
Well um, "strike first, strike hard, no mercy" is a thing I've heard.
Him: Healer! Healer! We need a healer! but not for me.
There must be a wise saying that correlates to situations like this; can you gather a few for us?
I Always ❤️ seeing the underdog prevailing!
I think his friends just wanted him to die so they were like “hey accept that giant man’s challenge”
One of the time where bringing a stick to a knife fight works.
Man!! I knew ZATOICHI is not just some movies!!!
Now I know where Irako Seigen was inspired from
Imagine losing to a man using a random twig.
Then again, someone did beat a gunman with a fish.
Toda Seigen and his student Sasaki Kojiro is what inspiring me to learn more about Kenjutsu since I was little. My dreams is to learn Toda-ryū or Ganryū (if it still around) Kenjutsu martial arts
Imagine being beaten by a old blind dude with a stick while you had a sword.
One thing that I always wonder about stories like this of amazing feats is how they were able to pull it off. Was it just his innate talent? Maybe his other senses gave him an advantage he had in that fight? I know that trying to break down a legend in this manner can demystify it but it's just smth I enjoy thinking about.
I've been watching record of ragnarok and I'll be honest, until now I had no idea these characters were real, thanks for bringing this to light!
Japan: "A huge sword measuring 3' 4"."
Medieval Europe: "That's a sidearm."
I didn't know such a great swordmaster existed! Loving learning about him
Oh wow that's interesting and really cool, In one of my favorite manga 'Shigurui' one of the main characters goes by Seigen and later becomes blind
Challenger: A blind man?! You see nothing!
Blind Swordsman: I see more than you.
Pool: unseen awesomeness
Ah, Sasaki Kojiro. I heard his enemy give a bonk on his head one time...
"hmm... interesting"
- Kinoko Nasu
YES A FELLOW FATE WATCHER
They should make that into an anime but like as a documentary of what happened during his life
Fujitora and tosen: I like this guy.
(Fujitora is from one piece and kaname tosen is from bleach. Both are blind)
imagine having a 3ft long sword and being a swordsman and being d defeated by a blind monk with a 30cm stick he found somewhere
Imagine to be the student of a monk using a stick....and later be killed by a man using a stick.
Getting your azz handed to you by a blind old monk with a STICK!! Priceless!!!
In french history, there was a great swordsmen who, hafter being defeated by the English, had been blinded and was kept as a toy. The English soldiers would put him in a room and give him a sword, trying to taunt him as much as they could without being killed. His name was Colin Maillard and to this day kids still play the "Colin Maillard" game in kindergarten
I'd love to see a full length video about Seigen!
Thank you for your post. I enjoy them.
ironic for Kojiro's mentor to have won his most famous duel with a stick, knowing Kojiro's fate.
An interesting little fact, blind women tended to go into the musical arts! Blind musicians were surprisingly common, and even had a special name, Goze!
That's honour for anyone to "see".
A.G.
If a blind samurai attacked me I would just walk away
He trained kojiro, i know that one, his school taught the short blade style but kojiro became famous for his mastery with nodaichi
Man.....got the reason why fujitora has a supreme grade
If i had a coin for every blind swordsman in anime, i would have more than 5 coins. That is a lot.
Man really became a child and found a random stick and used it as a weapon.
He beat a guy with a sword, using a 1ft stick.
Imagine that level of skill...
Stick and stones may break your bones.
There's no but. Umezu was lucky enough Seigen didn't find rocks too.
I have learnt about 2x as much knowledge then 5 years of primary school
So i finally found someone talking about Sensei
That arrogant man maxed out his strength points but not his intelligence points, and that was his first mistake...
That's like irl gyomei
That sounds like a very similar story of Musashi miamoto, Who was challenged by a local Prince and was slain using only a stick.
He doesn't see what to fear that's the advantage
Ooo Sasaki Kojiro! I have only read a bit about him after I have seen his beautiful reimagination in Records of Ragnarok. Would be more than happy if you could do a video about him!
Rumor says that there is a blind swordsman that can summon meteors.
