To be a "real samurai", I think you'd have to be a descendant of an actual samurai family, no? Of course, the samurai class is not recognized in Japan anymore, but there must be quite a few people who can trace their ancestral lineage back to samurai families from before the Meiji period.
@@VoxServoLiber Just saying, samurai is a mostly hereditary position. Since there aren't any daimyo around anymore to make samurai out of commoners. Save perhaps for the current Emperor of Japan. Just because you practice training with a Japanese sword it doesn't make you a samurai.
As of now yes. Because the samurai class is gone, now you have to be born into it. And for a decent ammount of time when they existed, thisnis also true. However, during the warring states period, a farmer could rise the ranks to samurai lord and even shogun. And they still recognize samurai heritage today, you just dont get any special privileges anymore. There are still quite a few famous familys still around. This was so cool to see you react to this video! I have seen quite of few of your videos and I always appreciate learning something new from them! Truly an amazing martial artist and swordsman! Hope we can connect soon!
I’ve seen this video when it came out. And I can say that it is a nice thing that people are getting others into traditional budos but a lot of these types of videos misrepresent proper Japanese martial arts and history.
Have you ever seen the TH-cam video "Duel to the Death" by Corridor Crew? It is a very nice video were they tried to be very authentic in their sword fighting.
Are tatami mats similar to human limbs? I always thought the purpose of using them was that you need to use proper edge alignment to make a clean cut, because the properties of the tatami mat makes it so that it bends or frays if your edge alignment is off?
@@Dustin_Frost Skallagrim mentioned that in one of his latest videos, that regularly doing mat cutting can actually worsen your combat skills, since it requires a lot more followup into the swings, while combat swings are supposed to be short and use as little power as necessary (or something like that)
Glad that you’ve made a video explaining the correct use of the Katana. T.V. shows and movies with Katana sword fights can give us the incorrect use of the Katana.
Awesome video as always Shogo. I always look forward to watching your videos on Japanese swordsmanship and all things about Japanese culture. Keep up the great work.
I just wanted to add that when fencing, with a rapier, you tend to follow the same rules as with a katana: point to throat, or eyes, very rarely center of mss. Of course for smoothness of movement and poise Katan is more refined,
Wanna point out, when cutting the fruit, the youtuber was not pulling from his sheath. This makes it exponentially easier. (I posted this before i saw Shogo's response.. He agrees)
I appreciate that those guys were just creating entertainment and a sort of training experience, but the trainee is never going to be challenging a "real samurai" unless he has a time machine hidden somewhere. Being a samurai isn't a result of any training, it's a social class and the training was the result of the status, not the other way around.
Great video. Also my son and I really enjoyed coming into the dojo. As a martial artist I definitely enjoy learning new skills and history and now you and your sensei may have just got me started on a new obsession. Thank you for the hospitality and hope to meet you all again someday 👏

@LetsaskShogo About Monouchi. According to Mr. Harada Kazuhiro sensei (8th dan hanshi), monouchi is only one point on the blade in balance with mekugi-ana (the hole in the hilt of the blade (nakago) is not in a random position). I am realy curious, can you please tell me how your teacher explain monouchi? I would really appreciate it 🙏, thanks

Hey shogo! Out of curiosity, when a new student arrives to learn kendo or kenjutsu, does japan still force people to be right handed like the old days? Or has there been an acceptance of left handed swordsman?
I have a question. Is katana the name for Japanese sword specifically? Or a name for swords in general? How would you call a European sword, like for example a longsword, in Japanese?
From what I understand, katana in Japan is a general term for swords in Japan. There are more specific terms, but I think Shogo explains it better and he likely knows a lot of things I don't (not an expert, just an enthusiast).
How tight should the 'fit' (in the saya) of a katana be? My habaki slides in/out easily and could come out if inverted - should it be tight? If so, how would I make the fit tighter?
Hello Shogo! I don't know if you have a video on this topic yet?..... What recommendations do you have for beginner swords? Hey, Shogo! Nice video! Honest question, why are those katanas behind you supported by the tsuka? I mean the ones on the horizontal stands, because I've never seen it that way. Thank you! Love your channel!
It's a cool video. I wanna emulate it, but this time, with a twist. Escrima, using a boken. (I know, I know. real Katanas are expensive for me, thus, a boken would do.) Is it doable? Yeah, though, the boken would be heavier, however, as escrima also have two-handed sword techniques. Two-sword techniques using katanas? It's difficult to pull as longer swords are heavier and have different balances. Perhaps, using two kodachis or two wakizashis.

As you said in other vids, a Real katana should be made and have a certified Japan license to be called a katana. then in the fun videos, it wouldn't be insulting to use the 'non-legit' katanas to cut fruits of clash blades. or does it still projecting the disrespecting attitude toward the art?
It's very difficult whenever you dedicate serious time to anything. To not have harsh feelings of people, people that are jokingly enjoying the idea. I myself have been practicing martial arts for nearly 35 years now. I sometimes forget that those who play pretend sometimes develop a serious interest in serious subjects and may some day devote to become a master.
Hello Shogo, I recently watched an animated series on Netflix called "Blue Eye Samurai" and the story follows female mixed-race blue-eyed samurai named Mizu on her quests for vengeance against four white men, one of whom is her father, who illegally remained in Japan during the closing of its borders by the Tokugawa shogunate However, this series has mature themes like the fifth season of Samurai Jack, so viewer discretion is advised
It wouldn't hurt the guys from the original video to practice some composure, mindfullness, and reverence. I personally don't like such showoffs, but at least they're making budo more popular.
So from what we learned, real katana masters doesn't play Fruit Ninja.

I always thought the purpose of using them was that you need to use proper edge alignment to make a clean cut, because the properties of the tatami mat makes it so that it bends or frays if your edge alignment is off?
I think in one of Shogo's videos he talks about it. The technique for cleanly cutting a mat is different from what you would use in normal sword budo.

Not only that, but the youtuber was having someone throw the fruit to him, rather than throw it himself, so has less to worry about coordinating.
I'm curious, as someone that is left handed, who would you handle training them?
I appreciate that those guys were just creating entertainment and a sort of training experience, but the trainee is never going to be challenging a "real samurai" unless he has a time machine hidden somewhere.
