Hey Guys! I recently visited Mazatlan, Mexico as it was one of the cities I was considering moving to when I move to Mexico this coming Summer. Check out the video to hear my thoughts.
One thing that surprised me? It's so beautiful, clean, modern and affordable. There are tons of rentals right by the ocean, sometimes overlooking the water, for under $1,000 USD per month in rent. You can't beat that with a stick!

Hi there! We just returned home to Colorado from visiting Austin. It was an awesome visit!
Ha...we are also considering moving to Mexico, Portugal, or France. We will probably plan a reconnaissance trip to one of those this January.
Safe travels and I hope all is going well.

I'm sorry that you have been given some bad information. Mazatlán certainly does have Uber (and Uber Eats). There is a prohibition from them picking up at the airport, but otherwise they are readily available; as are taxis, aurigas, and pulmonias (those golf cart things you may have seen). I'm also pretty sure that Sonora has a bigger fishing industry than Sinaloa. The area you were calling the hotel zone isn't, it's Playa Norte. Yes, there are hotels there as well as many condos, but the hotel area (Zona Dorada or Gold Zone) is further North. Playa Norte is where the main stretch of malecón (malecón=boardwalk. Mazatlán has the longest boardwalk in all of México) is located. And the main fishing fleet is located in a different area, I sometimes think those fishermen are in Playa Norte just for the tourists. While Mazatlán doesn't come close to the population of México City, we are quite sizeable and have about 650,000 people. The Centro Historico part of town you showed is just a couple of dozen streets in either direction. Most of the rest of the city is a working city - with uneven sidewalks, dust, and street animals. There are certainly areas that are more visually presentable (Olas Altas where your hotel is, the marina area, Cerritos to the far North, ...), but anyone looking for a working Méxican city will find it in Mazatlán. Additionally, the 'Summer' heat typically lasts from mid-June to Mid-October. In 2020 it didn't end until a bit into November. Think Houston, then turn up the thermostat a bit. HOT and HUMID.
Don't get me wrong - if I didn't value beach as much as I do, México City would be high on my list of places to plant myself as well. I'm just a little concerned that someone has given you some very incorrect information about Mazatlán.

Hi Brett - That's interesting, I thought since Uber didn't work at the airport, it didn't work throughout the city. I didn't try using it again in the Centro area as I spent all of my time on foot. Mazatlan is not "a small town" (that's not what I meant); keep in mind, I am born/raised in L.A. (population of 14 million metro) and have lived in NYC and London. So, that's my measure of large vs. medium vs. small. At 650k, comparatively, it's the size of San Francisco which is a fairly small city (not a small town but a small city), if that makes sense. I don't think anyone has given me incorrect info re: Mazatlan, other than Uber being available in the city center. The taxi driver told me the area where he dropped me off was the "hotel zone"--that was incorrect. Anyway, I appreciate the additional info you provided. I really liked Mazatlan. I will definitely visit again, although this time with some friends and perhaps post-pandemic. It is a beautiful city as I said. On the weather, that's the other thing, I don't like hot/humid. That's the reason I also decided "no" on Puerto Vallarta. I'm not looking to live in that weather. Again, we all have different wants and needs. Appreciate you sharing your perspective. :-)

@@SlowTravelingWanderer Hot/Humid will apply to every coastal city/town with the exception of Ensenada (from what I hear). Living in México City will give you easy access to one of my favorite beach towns, Acapulco. If you haven't been there you should give it a visit. Much bigger than Mazatlán, and with the international tourists having avoided the area, it doesn't have that (yes, I'm going to say it) 'tacky tourist' vibe. It's also more affordable than other coastal cities. If you travel to Acapulco, be sure to make a day trip out to Barra de Coyuca. You can grab a bus, collectivo, then rent a boat ride - or you can pay a tour operator to get you there. LONG expanse of incredible beach and well worth the time to get there.

    • @SlowTravelingWanderer
      @SlowTravelingWanderer  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@bjones9942 - Thanks for the suggestion Brett! Yes, I have realized that Mexico coastal areas are mostly always hot/humid. I guess I was hoping I'd find one that was like LA (which is coastal but has a dry heat mostly). On Acapulco, my only concern is that it has a reputation for being dangerous (especially over the last few years). Is it safe in your opinion? Especially if I traveled there as a single woman? I've heard a lot about Acapulco but the safety concern has always hung over it. Let me know your thoughts.

@@SlowTravelingWanderer In my experience, the cartel violence in México rarely affects tourists. I haven't had any problems, nor have I heard of any tourists having problems, in Acapulco (or most other places). Here and there you'll hear about an isolated incident in one of the cities, but usually the tourist isn't the target - Unlike the USA where violence is more often random. Of course, common sense needs to prevail anywhere you are. I travel around México as a single man - and do most of it by bus. I have yet to have an unsafe feeling, even when riding the Metro in CDMX (I love the subway in México City, even more since it's free when you're 60+ and have an INAPAM card).
I think you should give Acapulco a shot next time you want a vacation. Clavadistas are also a must-see, and the restaurant at the Mirador hotel overlooks them, so you can dine while you watch them dive. Another fun day trip there is taking a glass bottom boat to Isla la Roqueta. And really, if you like beaches, don't miss Barra de Coyuca.
EDIT: I blog, primarily for my own use in remembering when and where I've done things ... here's one of my Acapulco entries: www.adventuresinmazatlan.com/blog/2019/08/03/3-august-2019/

@@bjones9942 - Thanks Brett. I'm very familiar with Mexico City, having lived there previously and I too ride the metro and metrobus up and down that city! I have no reservations about many places, actually, in Mexico in general. Acapulco and the state of Guerrero, though, have had a number of issues over the past couple of years with fairly visible violence depicted in news stories. Having said that, it could have come and gone (last time I heard anything about it was 2019). I'll definitely keep in in mind. Thanks for sharing the blog info.

You start off by saying there's no Uber in Mazatlan. There is no Uber at the airport, but please do your research. I take Uber every day as well as use Uber Eats. My most expensive ride so far has been just over $3 USD. Delivery fees are around $1!

Fair enough but for a traveler the biggest cost of transport and to and from the airport. I’ve been all over Mexico and have “never” paid $430 pesos from airport to city center-not even in Puerto Vallarta which tends to be expensive. As I mentioned in another comment, I didn’t try Uber once in the historic center as I got around on foot. But it’s good for other visitors to know Uber does provider service in the city.

Am I bringing SoCal rents to Mexico though? Am I telling landlords what to charge for their properties? Or, am I observing the going rate Mexican owners have placed on their properties and making people aware that this is an option IF they were already thinking of moving to Mazatlan? Do you know how many properties have sat empty for months--especially now during the pandemic? Those are economic losses for Mexicans. Are you saying it's better that they just sit empty and Mexican landlords forgo income?
Make no mistake, you're living with a Mexican GF paying $200/mo rent and you're clearly taking advantage of the low costs as well. In Mexico City, my Mexican friends, pay no less than $450/mo with no beach.

That's a very common requirement for house rental throughout México, but it is a common practice everywhere I have lived, never a law. So you probably can do with a fianza, more so since you are not mexican and therefore least of a risk of default.

@@SlowTravelingWanderer some realtor offices use a policy that costs around $300 US (that's what it cost me) when there is no aval or fiador. That way both parties, you the tenant and the renters are covered with lawyers who will represent you in case the renter asks you to leave without reason or you break the lease. Others ask for aval from someone living in the city or outside the city as long as it's near the place you'd like to rent. I'd try different realtor offices because each manage differently regardless of what codes are in law books. Surprisingly, I've had to deal with renters who only asked for an ID, nothing else, not even proof of income. Others only 2 months deposit and that's it. Crime is a bigger problem in the USA than in Mexico, it is randomly, mass shootings, crime everyday all across the USA, it’s just a violent/crime culture country. Mexico-crime us mainly from the cartels but it’s targeted between them, you don’t mess with them and you’re fine. Still Mexico is safer than the rest of Latin America. Thousands of people from South America are moving to Mexico because according to them is a better country. Last thing, cartels just set up a “base” in Ecuador and is getting really bad.

The government? City Regulators? have given you only a couple of choices to go from the airport to your condo/resort. The cheapest is to take one of the busses, but keep in mind they will be stopping at a lot of resorts so if yours is at the end of the run, you will be adding an extra half an hour to an extra hour. For the taxi, you need to buy a ticket inside. In 2019 it was around $24 plus a couple of bucks tip for loading and unloading your bags. The taxis that bring people to the airport are not allowed to pick up passengers there. Not efficient as far as gas usage is concerned because the airport taxis return empty and the ones bringing you go back empty. The airport location makes it almost impossible to walk the distance to get to some place where you could get a cheaper taxi. Be aware of the free rides being offered in the airport. They are timeshare salesman. That free ride could cost you thousands, ha ha.

Just a suggestion: Your video resolution is in 360P - a very old, outdated, and low resolution. It might look barely OK on a phone, but on anything bigger, it's terrible! Many TH-camrs are posting videos in 4K, the highest resolution most of us can enjoy. It's crystal clear! A lot of other videos are in 1080P, which is also very clear. Most of broadcast TV is in 720P and it is the lowest resolution still considered High Definition. Below that is Standard Resolution (SD) which is barely OK, and rarely seen at all from any TH-cam channel in the past 5 or so years. 1080P is the most popular resolution and is called Full HD. Your video is in 360P, a very low resolution and quite frankly, almost never seen resolution anymore. Please consider upgrading your apparently very old camera, or cell phone, or whatever you used to record this. I will watch this video, because the content is useful, but I will never watch any others, or subscribe, if this is what I must endure.
My hope is that this helps you understand video resolutions as it is not meant to be a hurtful post.

All the hoopla about Mazatlan is very inaccurate. The town is very expensive in many aspects, this is due to being a tourist trap. Cost goes up substantially in the Summer due to the heat/humidity. Also, life sucks in the Summer in Mazatlan, hot and humid to the point where you are a prisoner in your own home with air conditioning.

@@smartassboy Sorry to break it to you, but it has already happened as Mazatlán was "developed" way before Cancún. In 1957, the city more or less ended at Avenida Gutiérrez Nájera. But the Malecón had been extended to Punta Camarón by 1965 or so by the city fathers. Past it, some gringo loco built a hotel, El Hotel Playa Mazatlán (his descendants still run the place). There used to be a bunch of places where you could drive in a van, rent a spot, hang una hamaca, and have a great time. Hell, often you did not even have to have a van. Soon, the road got extended to Punta del Sábalo but inland so that hotels and other businesses could be built right by the water. Around 1972, a local big shot convinced his friends to put in the road up to Punta Cerritos, Pueblo Bonito was built, etc., and that was the end of "small" Mazatlán. Literally hundreds of thousands of fuereños migrated to the city to work in the hotels and here we are, 50 years later. Progress they call it. But el viejo Mazatlán is still more or less the same, albeit with more gringos.
