I'm wondering if I'm making a mistake but I thought there were over 250 varieties of agave but not sure if they are variations of the 30 varieties? Good description just wanted to clarify that because I swear I read that somewhere. I was trying to find some agave varieties that grow in my climate. I'd have to make mezcal in my climate because blue weber doesn't grow here. I found a 7 year maturing variety that grows here so that's kinda cool. So once I am more established and build a new house by that time I'll have some agave to pit roast in the ground. Thinking maybe plant enough plants for 5 or 10 gallon batch and then just make it tradition to plant the same amount of plants each year so I always have a mature row of agave. oh yeah I"m a DIY MANIAC Lui! lol
There are over 200 kinds but from all the research I've done there are 30 varieties used for making mezcal. But yeah! Definitely look and see what you can find!
Mezcal is "my drink." It is actually hard to find. I always get a funny look when I ask for it. At home I drink Lajuita, which is the best I can find at a somewhat reasonable price. I wish it was a bit more smoky.
When I was a kid, there was a mezcal seller who came around from house to house with a big container of mezcal strapped to a donkey. You’d go out there with your own cup and buy some. The milk man sold milk the same way. Tried the mezcal once and hated it. Love tequila though. Also, back then the mezcal was not clear, it was kinda cloudy, or milky, if you will.
At last count there were over 240 species, varieties of Agave and counting. I think everyone should give Mezcal a try before they croak, as it is such a departure from Tequila. Did you know that the most popular spirit drink in Mexico is not Tequila or Mezcal, but Rum, usually homemade Rum.
Absolutely! I have also heard mixed things about it as well and I am currently doing research on it for a Follow up video to this one speaking specifically about Mezcal. I want to make sure I am as accurate as possible on the follow up video to this one.
love tequila made me a super alcoholic! oh btw in hawaii that cooking hole is called an imu everyone should try it makes so much good food we made turkey in one for thanksgiving its awesome
I'm drinking the casamigos mezcal in the grey bottle, my first thoughts were it reminds me strongly of a very peaty scotch like a Laphroaig quarter cask. Must say it's damn good stuff
Mescal is better than tequila anytime because the original tequila was made many years ago but it came the industrialization and tequila stepped up the to it as well and is prosed different than mescal the streaming part primarily and is water down as well lol. Good video.
I knew about the geographical difference (Jalisco) but I was always under the impression that Mezcal was like a bootleg Tequila. Until this video. I've had mezcals before but I think I want to re try with this knowledge.
I always viewed it like Sparkling Wine or Champagne. Tequila is basically the champagne version and mezcal is everything else that's basically the same thing but not from that specific named thing.
Mezcal actually predates Tequila, and tastes better IMO. If you really want to try another even older drink made from agave, try Pulque. Pulque was being made and consumed WAY before the Spanish came to what is now Mexico.
jose cuervo is basically mezcal, so most americans havent had real tequila thats why it gets such a bad rep. mezcal was mixed into tequila to make it cheap because its seen as a trash drink. kinda crazy how now that its becoming trendy the prices are shooting up.
The prices are shooting up for a ton of reasons. One being the price of agave has shot up dramatically because of all of the celebrity owned brands and mass production of tequila in general
So from my understanding there were a few brands that did that (usually the not very good ones) that was also a gimmick that some marketing executives came up with. They claimed it was an Aphrodisiac but it was just a gross bug. You shouldn't drink anything that's had a bug sitting in it, in my opinion hahaha. I didn't mention it because I've never experienced or even seen any Mezcal in any bar I've been in with a worm in.
@@Lui_Fern I had entered a contest in Hawaii where I had to drink a tiny one shot bottle of mezcal and show the the worm and swallow it to prove you drank the the mezcal it was a one on one contest, I did win the contest I did over 12 shots...Man was I drunk afterwards.....I was in the Navy back in 1884...much younger then can't do that now though.. @@donaldbryant5295 hahaha what a story! I loved reading it. And of course my friend! I believe the worm was something a few brands did a while back before Mezcal actually became popular and people knew what it was. But thank you for sharing haha i genuinely loved reading that story
In the 70s we would take mezcal to Colorado river and it always had a worm in it. Of course everyone wanted to be the one to kill the bottle because it supposedly absorbed alcohol.....
Tequila is a type of mezcal, the difference is that tequila has to be made with blue weber agave. Also tequila at the start was considered as a drink for the poor, when tequila had (and still has) a lot of popularity, mezcal was then considered the cheaper option, until recently when it begun to have a lot more popularity.
I tried a mezcal a few weeks ago at an upscale Taco restaurant and I was completely blown away! I had no idea what it was and it hit me like a brick wall with the Smokey flavor. I really enjoyed it and highly recommend to those who enjoy uniquely flavored spirits!

Uncertified Agave spirits are what I seek the most.
Any brands to look out for?
Mezcal is my favorite spirit to drink too! So delicious and i love the smokiness
We're is the Worm?
Love to see the Luna up there. Best Tequila you can buy for under $50
When I was a kid, there was a mezcal seller who came around from house to house with a big container of mezcal strapped to a donkey. You’d go out there with your own cup and buy some. The milk man sold milk the same way. Tried the mezcal once and hated it. Love tequila though. Also, back then the mezcal was not clear, it was kinda cloudy, or milky, if you will.
After having mezcal i prefer it over tequila and i still love tequila.
Yes! You're a smart man! I totally agree with you. Mezcal is my favorite
Look in to pulque the ancient fermented agave beverage
So tequila and mezcal are signature liquors of the states of Jalisco and Oaxaca, are there other Mexican liquors that are state specialties?
At last count there were over 240 species, varieties of Agave and counting. I think everyone should give Mezcal a try before they croak, as it is such a departure from Tequila. Did you know that the most popular spirit drink in Mexico is not Tequila or Mezcal, but Rum, usually homemade Rum.
I suppose you've had the Pechugas by now?
Surprisingly i still have not gotten my hands on any pechugas! I really really need to!
Who’s here in 2024 and snickering at lunazul and el jimador 😆 Lou has come a long way. Would hate to see what tequilas I was drinking 3-4 years ago 😳😳
It's incredible how much you can learn in just a few short years 😁
I think bourbon now can be called bourbon in every each part of America.. but it supposed to have 51% of corn in it.. correct me if I am wrong
Ambos son la mera Riata, de México para el mundo.
Can you address the worm in the bottle thing? I’ve heard mixed things about it.
Mezcal is amazing!!!
The best!!
I'm drinking the casamigos mezcal in the grey bottle, my first thoughts were it reminds me strongly of a very peaty scotch like a Laphroaig quarter cask. Must say it's damn good stuff
I just tried agave wine and it’s the other other spirits lol great for margaritas
Mescal is better than tequila anytime because the original tequila was made many years ago but it came the industrialization and tequila stepped up the to it as well and is prosed different than mescal the streaming part primarily and is water down as well lol. Good video.
TY
You're so welcome!n
I learned in Mexico City how to actually drink Mezcal.. you sip on it, you dont drink it like a shot.
I knew about the geographical difference (Jalisco) but I was always under the impression that Mezcal was like a bootleg Tequila. Until this video.
I've had mezcals before but I think I want to re try with this knowledge.
Oh good! I'm so happy to hear that you were able to take some good knowledge from this video! 😁🙏
Mezcal is way better than tequila. Tequila is just a marketing term big corporations use.
400 conejos, Aleron, ojo de tigre, These are some of the best mezcal for beginners. The best mezcal of 2020 carreño ensable 7
Thank you for the recommendations! Those are good shouts
jose cuervo is basically mezcal, so most americans havent had real tequila thats why it gets such a bad rep. mezcal was mixed into tequila to make it cheap because its seen as a trash drink. kinda crazy how now that its becoming trendy the prices are shooting up.
The prices are shooting up for a ton of reasons. One being the price of agave has shot up dramatically because of all of the celebrity owned brands and mass production of tequila in general
I thought mezcal had the worm, Is that true?
Thanks for answering and replying. Great job
In my opinion, mezcal is better to drink when you mix it with a Soda while making carne asada while tequila can be both mixed or drank straight
There’s also pulque
I got a bottle on a whim, was not prepared for how smokey it is, compared to tequila almost tastes like barbecue sauce.
1.5oz tequila,
.5 oz mezcal
.25 oz agave syrup
few dashes of choclate bitters,
few dashes of aromatic bitters.
HELL of a drink
Love Del Maguey Mezcal Chichicapa Espadin.
