Caravan Video Part 24 - Thetford C2 pump replacement.

- During the last outing to Thornwick Bay (September/October 2019), we discovered that the electric flush on our Thetford C2 toilet was either sluggish or not working at all. I had an unexpected day off work so I decided to take a look. At first, I thought that the pump was just sticking but it soon became clear that it would need replacing. After trying a few caravan places without success I managed to find a genuine Thetford pump on Amazon for just over £36 so I ordered it and once it was fitted the toilet was restored to full working order.
PLEASE NOTE: I'm just a DIYer. Please treat this video as a "how-I-did-it" rather than a "how-to".

Thanks for the video. I just bought a 28 year old campervan and the toilet doesn't work. I checked the fuse which was ok so it must be the pump. I have a spare pump and now I know how to fit it. If it wasn't 1 in the morning I'd go and fit it now!

All sorted, old pump was seized up. Replaced it, new one is working like a charm.🙂

I`ll be try this solution. It seems like exactly my problem. I thank you for the explanation. It was no easy to find this posible trouble on the toilet. I have no idea about anything, I´m new in this caravan-world. Are too many videos about how to install a new toilet in a vancamper, but not easy to find videos about old caravans. I will be trying out all your recommendations as my pump seems to have stopped. The caravan is a similar age, so the pump will very likely be the original. Isn’t it funny how something that was working fine, last time it was used, just packs in! I call it Christmas Lights syndrome!!!

I've just brought a caravan and someone before has cut the pump wire and just twisted the wires together then put heatshrink which isn't waterproof over the join. To make it worse they cut the wire short inside the tank!. The wire was wet so obviously blown fuse somewhere. The fuse under the toilet was fine so need to trace that further back. The pump still works as I dabbed it on the battery. Hopefully nothing to major but I would like to replace the whole wire ideally or use a proper waterproof join. I'm glad the video was helpful to you. I used butt connectors (as per the original) with heat shrink to keep out the liqud.
@@Parknest yes I may end up doing that just the heatshrink was poorly done before. You can get heatshrink with glue inside that would make a better seal. Thanks again

Hi! Now the pump works but it seems that the flushbutton is broke, mabye the switch? No electricity from the flushbutton. Do you have a video that shows how to fix that? Best regards/ Jeanette
@@nettis33 It is probably the switch. I had mine replaced when the caravan was serviced.

HI ya, Have been watching the vid on the C2. thanks for the help, however after cutting the cable to test the pump I've found that it seems to work all ok (Draws about 250-300ma) I appear to have voltage drop so suspect it to be at the fuse or the switch... Any hints as to how it can be safely removed without damaging it to test it....

Thanks for this the fuse had blown and the pump stuck ..... less than 15 min fix and done for pence (just the glass fuse)
Glad it helped. Mine has a blade fuse which is accessible once the cassette is removed.

Just about to replace my pump. On my system the bracket was right down the bottom just floating around lol. Is the bracket hard to locate ??? Thanks for the vid.

Hi. You wouldn't know how to get to the fuse on these c2's would you? I can see it from underneath, but no idea how to remove the unit to replace the frayed wires.
And especially how you'd get the whole unit out? thanks.
The fuse is pink and should be accessible once the cassette is removed. I've only replaced the pump so I can't help any further.

Hi I've replaced the fuse and put a new pump on it and still nothing? The flush button clicks.....any ideas?
Faulty switch perhaps? I had to have mine replaced when I had the caravan serviced not long after we got it.
My pump is stuck on. Is the micro switch under the large circular push button that also twists andlocks the cassette flap and how does it come off?
I didn't have to change that switch. It think it has to be accessed from underneath but I'm not sure.
@@Parknest yes it seems there are 4 screws to release the assembly underneath where the micro switches are located and you also have to remove the Centre cap from the big push and twist circular button inside and get a long Phillips screwdriver down the hole to remove one screw to get the top part off prior to removing the mechanism from below

The fuse is located inside the cassette compartment at the top. It is a pink/purple 3A fuse. A quick Google search turned this up:

@@Parknest Thankyou there wasn't a fuse in and a grey plastic fuse retaining clip had come off so fuse just wouldn't stay in but all sorted now many thanks ... :)
Hi, great video. I own an old ABI Sunstar camper. Pump doesn work. The idea is to keep it stationary at my land and use 230V power in it. Just wondering, what solution could be to replace 12V pump and get any another unit for WC flush system?
Just replace the motor like I did. You can get an adaptor for your hook-up cable that will allow you to plug it into a normal mains socket (the 3-pin plug if you're in UK or Republic of Ireland).

The fuse is located above the toilet cassette. You have to remove the cassette to get access to it.

Good info mate, I'm a newbie to this, I had same problem but when I got to the pump it is full of water and the lead has no split on it to connect a new one, is it possible it connects at the flush, and do you know if the flush button lifts off, any help would be much appreciated, caravan is 25 years old and I have no manual
The old pump was connected using butt connectors and some heat shrink tubing with insulating tape round it to keep water out so I installed it the same way.
Mine has no visible connection, the wire runs behind the toilet, i think I might need to remove flush cover to see if its there, do you know if this removes, i dont want to pull it incase it breaks
You may have to cut the wire to fit the replacement pump. It probably varies depending on the make of caravan and/or cassette toilet. I'm sorry I can't be of much more help. I can only show what I did on mine.

Would the new pump fit into the old holding bracket? Have you tried? You mention in the video is literally identical... Just wondering why Thetford supplies a new bracket?!
The new and old pump are different. The whole assembly fits as you can see in the video.
Always check the 3amp blade fuse first.
Yeah, I'd already checked the fuse (should've mentioned it in the video). On this one it is located above the toilet cassette which has to be removed to get access to it.
I have a standard 20mm fuse just above the cassette in mine. Is there also a blade fuse somewhere?
There is a fuse panel for all the 12v electrics elsewhere in the caravan. The location will vary depending on the make and model.
@@brightgreencarrot From 1994 the blade fuse superseded the original-style fuse.
Sometime soak it in coke , that cleans the stuff out of the pump
It was the original so it had done well to last as long as it did.
Did yours have like a little plastic pump bag in the twisting bit my toilet doesn't flush and looks identical to your but did notice the bag in yours thanks
I'm not sure what you meant. I only replaced the pump.
@@Parknest mines got like a little bag in it under the little twist cap mate looks abit like a expandable water container but on a smaller scale

The flushing water is filled up from the outside. There's a filler neck above the toilet cassette and yes, the pump does sit in the flushing water.

There is a separate reservoir for the flushing fluid. The waste ends up in the removable cassette.

That speaks volumes about your integrity.
Crap and not the correct model at all.
It is a genuine Thetford part. The original part had been superseded and was no longer available. The whole assembly (pump & bracket) is interchangeable. It fitted perfectly and is still working to this day.
