@@Banaziir Underrated for Sure. The problem is, that people have a really good reason to dislike the theme, because you here it so much across any playthrough. @@theonlyMoancore there probably only ever was the single Avatar; the multiple Erdtree Avatars only showed up after the Elden Ring was shattered and the Minor Erdtrees began to spread. The Scadutree certainly isn't in great shape, but I don't think it ever shattered or burned or needed to spread seeds everywhere like it was dying.
This fight is like trying to uproot a weed which simply will not die, hence why the track feels 'lethargic' at times with its long notes. The thorns of the scadutree avatar I think are symbolic of its scorned existence and that of the land of shadow as a whole- but despite being abandoned and forgotten, the scadutree avatar still retains its holy essence behind its black shell which comes out both physically and musically especially during the later phases. Although it is tarnished, rotten and covered in dark thorns, the scadutree avatar resembles a giant sunflower, a type of plant that is emblematic of the brilliant light of the Erdtree as seen in the base game (also goldmask). It is likely that the Scadutree and its avatar also shone much like the Erdtree once, at least before it was obscured my Marika and I think the sophistication you can hear recalls that time of old. When we enter the land of shadow, it is unknown what happened there and why it was concealed and I think the mysterious aspect of the music you mentioned fits these circumstances very well. The avatar musters every last ounce of strength to throw at the player, a lord of Marika's Golden Order which let the land of shadow wither away. It's neither evil nor malice that motivates the avatar, but instead a deep and bitter resentment of those who abandoned and thereby doomed it. While threatening at first, as mirrored in the music, the avatar's attacks become more and more desperate the longer the fight drags on (it slingshots its own body headfirst at the player, smashes its head into the ground and explodes in holy thorns, hurting itself in the process). The avatar is so persistent in its opposition to the golden order and by extensions the player that it refuses to resign, even in death, hence the lack of a conclusion to the track. Can't break a spirit that's already been shattered over the course of hundreds if not thousands of years of decay.
They love to use tremolo in some "disturbing" pieces of music in the game, very notably in the Caelid overworld track and the underground areas like Siofra River.
"There's a primal sense to this sound" Hell yes. The Scadutree is all about the kindness of gold, *_without_* order. Hidden away, and omitted by Marika's dreams of grandeur
@@DustDemonTwilight Yes, that's the point. The Scadutree symbolises everything that Marika forsook, and when she created the Order of the Erdtree, she left the kindness of Gold behind. "The Scadutree is the shadow of the Erdtree. Born of dark notions that bear no sense of Order, that twist and bend its stock, rendering it brittle. A second stalk winds gently around the first, almost as if in a tender embrace." The Scadutree is the Shadow the Erdtree. It is its counterpart. Where the Erdtree is imposing, but represents the intolerance of the Order, the Scadutree is brittle and chaotic looking, but it embraces everything it rises over with a dim, healing light and Holy sap.
The duet likely represents the shape of the Scadutree: two trees coiling about each other in a firm embrace. Definitely one of my favorites from the DLC and a remix of the base game theme "Erdtree Avatar"! Another theme from the DLC you should look into is Metyr, Mother of Fingers. It takes quite the interesting turn...
Definitely would recommend listening to the Erdtree Avatar theme, it is very similar. Probably should have listened to it first, before the Scadutree Avatar theme.
This boss is like the modern Sif. It doesn't make you feel quite as bad, putting down an old dog limping and around and stumbling while trying to hit you, but you still watch it convey emotion through movements and become more and more desperate until you finally win. The music does so much for the storytelling, and it leaves you with a hollow victory.
Something kinda hard to notice about this theme is that it's actually a remix! It's the theme for fighting Erdtree Avatars (and other bosses, like Golden Hippo) made more somber and cinematic, more fitting for a major boss basically.
Super interesting analysis, it feels like the track both fits the story of the hornsent and the inhabitants of the Shadow Lands, as well as Miquella's story, which fits considering what the Avatar is and the drop you get from it. The sense of the mystical, as well as the disturbing chords, reflect the Hornsent culture, both their heights and their sins, and the ambiguous resolution of perhaps happiness or perhaps sadness being the rise of Marika, their goddess who should have been the one to usher in their golden age. But of course, Marika destroys the hornsent and banishes their remnants, leaving them to struggle for survival while her Golden Order, bringing only a few moments of happiness, ends in naught but tragedy. Meanwhile, Miquella also experiments with the mystical, and for most of his story in the base game it's left ambiguous as to whether he's going to get the freedom and peace he desires for the people of the Lands Between or whether his story has ended in tragedy, either at the hands of Mohg or at his own failings. Then it turns out that in his pursuit of peace and freedom he's abandoned everything that made him him, and ultimately proven to be his own undoing. The Scadutree Avatar's arena is the place where the discarded remnants of his Greatrune fell, one of the final things he cast away, and I've seem some theories which suggest that it might even be the Greatrune which caused the Avatar to arise, or at least gave a boost to its power. Despite its relative insignificance lore-wise compared to other bosses in the DLC, the Avatar does parallel a lot of its themes are narratives, fitting considering it is an avatar for all the things Marika cast away.
An absolutely beautiful track and boss often overlooked in the dlc... I love the subersions of expectations in both the fight and in the theme. Every time you kill it, it just keeps coming back getting more and more desperate every time. Its special attack in its third phase has it standing up tall and taking the pose of the Scadutree before flashing a brilliant gold light across the arena, sending the player and bits of the avatar flying, then lying down likely having heavily damaged itself with its own attack.
My man! Putting some respect on my Tree boi. This track is such an emotional ride. This and Midra are the two tracks out of this DLC I come back to the most. A beautiful balance of strings and choir and I adore that it starts masculine and moves towards feminine choir the more it gets beaten down. Such a sense of progression. It's elegant and sad. That final movement just rips your heart out. 😢
A sunflower stuck at the bottom of the greatest dumping pit of the lands between, the Scadutree. What should have been a symbol of good and benevolence has had endless negativity and evil poured over it, and the music in particular makes me think it is aware of this fact. It was robbed off what it should have been, it wants to live...but it was not to be.
It was so hauntingly beautiful the first time…I lost because I just kept dragging it out wanting to hear it all. But he’s far from defenseless, and that double revive had me sweating.
Ive always wished that the would’ve used that opening melody a bit more during the OST. I love those initial notes. Also one of the most beautiful looking fights in the series. The boss doesn’t do much in that regard but its design and the arena is breathtaking. It’s also nice how the arena fades to dark after we defeat the avatar. Also I just noticed: aren’t those deep choirs the same they used in the scadu altus background soundtrack? For example at 1:50.
This was my favorite battle and theme! It keeps reminding me of Rains of Castamere from Game of Thrones and I cant put my finger on why. Weirdly enough both have GRR Martin so idk
6:53 This tremolo sounds very similar to the one that plays right at the beginning of the Erdtree Knights OST. I don't know if it's an Erdtree motif in general or just a sound to strike fear, because I vaguely remember this sound playing in Stormveil Castle's ambience theme or other tracks made by Tai Tomisawa. So it's probably something he likes to do.
Yay, ive been waiting for this one. Hope you'll cover Rellana the Twin Moon Knight or Putrescent Knight in the future. Little lore time, the Scadutree Avatar is dying. In regards to the tremolo, you definitely have heard it before, specifically from Beast Clergyman's transition, if not in some of the overworld music from your own playthrough.
Something so unconventional and unique about the design of a giant sunflower, even in a game like Elden Ring and its fantasy/sci-fi setting where Aliens and Gods literally exist😅
Two songs I think you should listen to are The Only Thing They Fear is You, and BFG Division, both by Mick Gorden. They are very different types of music from the ones I've seen you listen to, but they are both very well made.
A few things of note The track of course is a different version of the erdree avatar and im very surprised you didn't pick up on that *spoilers if you haven't fought it already* Secindly this part at 12:00 where the voices raise up only to die out sound as if they are trying their hardest to sing as if they are desperately trying to cling to life but fail, this obviously showing the persistence of the avatar as after it repeatedly dies it still regrows itself over and over, weaker and weaker before dying for good
Din'd imagined that FromSoftware would use Sunflowers on their games again, but here we are, but can't blame them, Sunflowers are my favorite flowers cause it look like aliens or some sort of mystical flora. 🌻
