Man, I love that little chorus in the middle of this track. I know catchy melodies are usually not the point of soulsborne music, but that was really memorable.
Speaking of soulborne music, I got all my soulsborne music videos in one playlist over here: th-cam.com/video/kaMKeviMQD4/w-d-xo.html

If you do look at it i would recommend vs pelinal or vs champion of the Emperor

I also noticed the harpsichord at the beginning instantly. It's the kind of instrument that it's hard to ignore and it instantly puts you in a certain medieval/evil mastermind mindset.
I usually find it hard to separate the instruments in these types of soundtracks since they are often so compressed, although this was was actually mastered better imo and with more care/less loudness than usual.
Great analysis btw, the chords part was very interesting 😆.

The most evil character in the entire game.
He's not corrupted or out of his mind or anything. No.
He's fully aware of the terrible things he's doing.
Edit: Scrap all that, Mogh beat the allegations.

It invokes a genuine curiosity over just how deep formal music theory and training can go.

Trichords and tritone progressions are common throughout ER's soundtrack though, and most Fromsoft games for that matter. It's also a myth that it was "banned" by the Catholic church or Christians in general, and appears in Christian hymns and chants.

    • @janugur2241

@@vitriolicAmaranth It wasn't so much so that it was strictly banned to be never used in music at all but the intention was to ban putting it in a highlight but it was still okay to use it in progressions and melodies as passing notes

    • @vitriolicAmaranth
      @vitriolicAmaranth 2 ปีที่แล้ว +43

@@janugur2241 No, it was never banned at all in any capacity and figures heavily as a core component in a lot of medieval Christian religious music. The idea of trichords being banned by "the church" is entirely a post-enlightenment legend invented as part of the large body of modern mythology depicting organised religion as an authoritarian anti-intellectual bogeyman that in many cases is viewed as being directly responsible for the "dark ages," even though it was that very church (ie the Catholic church) that championed intellectualism, set up practically-free learning institutions, taught young boys and even girls how to read and write and encouraged them to lead academic rather than mundane lives, hosted practically every great European philosopher, inventor, artist, musician and mathematician for hundreds of years, and generally prevented the unrelated "dark ages" that are actually attributable to feudalism from leading to the utter collapse of European civilization by using the weight of religion to curtail disgusting and inhumane acts perpetrated by tyrannical rulers and nobility. You should always regard claims that Catholic authorities banned something during the middle ages with suspicion and do your research before spreading those claims, and if you do your research on this particular topic, you will discover that it is simply not true; There has never been any evidence of it, there is firm positive evidence to a contrary claim (that Christian musicians endorsed by the church were actually quite enamoured with trichords for the purpose of building tension and evoking grandiosity during the period they were supposedly banned, as evidenced by pieces of music from those periods that survive today), and the claim did not appear until the 19th century, when in fact the term "diabolus in musica" did not appear until the early 18th century, _post-enlightenment,_ and referred only to how it sounded dissonant and was therefore difficult to write into music, not some notion that it was actually a chord that would summon or evoke the devil. The closest thing that ever existed to "bans" on trichords stemmed from medieval theorists suggesting alternative tunings or scales that would exclude the tritone so it wouldn't be accidentally played, souring a piece if the player missed a note- This is the same way that we struggled for centuries to eliminate the "wolf tone," not because we believed that playing it would summon wolves to gore our audience or that the tone was inherently evil, but simply because it sounded bad and might be played accidentally.

Like his minions, he expects an elevated position in the New Order after she replaces the Golden Order with her Fell Order. Kidnapping and mutating Miquella is just a necessary step in his outer god's plan, so he is more than happy to play along. Mohg will mutate, corrupt, murder, conspire with or sleep with anyone to further his ambitions.
Mohg is always in control, which means that he always chooses to do the horrible things he does. He's the source of the cursed blood that drives the Bloody fingers mad, but he isn't just a battle crazed murder like Okina or Lucinda. There is always a purpose behind his violence, even as he awards dangerous powers to these increasingly unhinged henchmen, knowing they will spill literal lakes of blood with them.

He's trying to overthrow his father and mother's rule over the lands between out of pure vengence and hate for them, not becouse of greed, or lust for power. I feel like his theme weaves his noble blood and evil together really well, becouse when listening to it, you don't feel like you're confronting some kind of beast, or madman, but a very elegant, organised and inteligent destructive power.

Morgott gained the trust of People who hated him by defending leyndell while Mohg went to other route and left hating everyone. Swearing to one day bring his new god and send revenge upon the people who wronged him, wich he whould achieve via his god and dynasty.
Considering how everyone hated him that wasent an Omen and im sure a lot of omens didint probably agree with his views either, he didint have many followers at all so he devided to promise power and a place in his dynasty to those who whould help him in his pursuit for revenge. He did end up geting followers like the Sanguine nobles and Varre for example but non the less he didint have many allies.

-Also, I think Mohg’s first phase lacks the impact you’re used to, because Mohg himself uses sophisticated, yet bombastic attacks. Having a theme that goes harder would probably distract from the fight itself, where a misstep can mean death.
As phase 2 starts, your blood would be pumping because of the sudden, vampiric curse you just endured, so now the orchestra goes full blast. Can’t drown out the fight with music if they’re both the same volume. That’s what I think, anyway.

Okay, for those who are interested - diminished ("disturbing") chord sounds this way, cuz it's a symmetrical chord (and also it has tritone in it). That means, that all notes in it have the same distance between them (3 semitones/minor 3rd in this case). What's also interesting about this, is that an octave is made exactly out of four minor 3rds, meaning, that this chord can be "looped" over and over using the same notes (though it makes it a dimished 7th chord), keeping the same interval between them at every instance. This makes our ears unable to distinct the "main note", or the root note of the chord, hence we can't settle down on it, making the chord literally unsettling.
This concept also applies to augmented chords, except they're made out of major 3rds, and one octave is made out of three major 3rds. And yes, it too sounds quite disturbing, also, in a way different fashion.
As for why the tritone sounds this way - first, frequency relations, and second, an octave is made exactly out of two tritones, so the symmetrical thing applies here aswell.
And no, tritone was NOT banned during any time period. Like, not at all. Check Adam Neely's video about it, if you're interested specifically about the "Tritone ban myth".
Hope my explanations were not incomprehensible, though if that's the case, I hope I at least got you interested in this topic, hehe

Definitely one of the more iconic bosses in the game. Everybody freaks out the first time he uses his curse attack in his transition to the second phase, doing massive bleed damage. Throughout the first phase he does an ominous countdown in Latin from 3 to 1:
    Tres.
    Duo.
    Unus.
Then at the second phase transition - as he repeatedly stabs his trident into the air, piercing his formless goddess who desires wounds, he screams:

This track fits Mohg so well, and I don't have the expertise to explain why. I really like how you can describe the fundamentals of this music and why the composers chose to do certain things, because it gives a little more insight into Mohg as a character.
I think the reason phase 1 has so little percussion or heavy beats is because Mohg is calculated. He's smart, and completely and utterly evil, which is a scary combination. He's aware that he's evil, and that doesn't stop him from going forward with his plans of world domination. Mohg doesn't care that you're there to fight him, and he's not afraid of you, hence the lack primal emotion.
However, phase 2 has a much more primal feel as you said because of the inclusion of the percussion. I think this is mainly because, yes, he is getting angry at being unable to finish you off. Whenever you die in this bossfight, he says "Miquella is mine, and mine alone," which hints towards a sort of delusion, that you're there to take Miquella away from him. The primal emotions likely return in phase 2 because he's gotten angry, or he's afraid that you'll take Miquella away.

Great analysis and description as always. When I first heard this piece, I found it to be less distorted and more consistent than other boss themes of Elden Ring. The Tarnished is in his home, he's close to the thing he values the most and he could potentially lose everything he's working towards. You should listen to Starscourge Radahn or Beast Clerygman. Two very different Tracks. Love the videos 🖤 And would love to listen to music theory by you

Thank you so much for these videos. They're helping me to appreciate the music so much more. I love how you have something to say and form an interpretation about every little detail - it's like an examination of the lore!

This was great, and I hope you do an analysis of the theme for Morgott, The Omen King! Morgott and Mohg are twin bothers (sorry, spoilers but it's not that shocking when you think about it -- I mean, look at the horns!), so I think it could be very interesting to compare the two themes.
I was surprised when I first heard Mohg's theme because it's rather soft to start. It's rather beautiful in a twisted sort of way, and things don't get hard and heavy until his second phase. Also, a lot of church-esque choir bits, which seems odd since Mohg isn't holy one bit. However, I got to thinking about a comment someone made regarding Mohg and Morgott: Morgott is actually the noble one of the two as he is trying to keep Leyndell from completely falling apart and trying to uphold his mother's legacy. However, he is dressed in tattered, old clothing, like a peasant. He looks nothing like a king, and I think he may use Holy magic? Very unusual for someone of noble birth who is also "cursed."
Mohg on the other hand, looks dignified, even regal, like some sort of bishop/priest. Yes, he looks terrifying but his attire is very well-made, and you would think since he's the "evil" brother, that he'd be wearing tattered clothing. I wonder if Mohg dressed the way he did not just because he is a sort of evil "priest" but because he sees himself as godly, someone who deserves to rule and who deserves to have ultimate power. Basically, an ego thing. Morgott dresses in more humble attire because he isn't interested in power, nor does he seem to have any sort of care about his demigod status. He's just trying to do what's right for the Lands Between by his standards.
As to how this all relates to their theme music, Mohg's theme represents the sort of sinister "majesty" of his appearance and beliefs, while Morgott's (which starts off loud and proud and dramatic) is actually befitting a ruler due to how powerful, dramatic, and intense it is. Mohg's theme rises in strength while Morgott's kind of wavers a bit towards the end, even including a sad violin bit. Killing Morgott is tragic in many ways, though, so the violin makes sense. Mohg grows wings in his second phase, like some sort of dark angel, and it's like he's showing his true power to try and intimidate the player into submission. No tragedy in killing Mohg!

Your analysis of these soundtracks have given me a whole different way to appreciate the thought and effort put into them, it’s honestly really interesting. Thank you for making these!

Mohg is supposed to be a parallel to Hades. He's found in a palace deep in the underground where an ancient river runs through called Siofra where the souls of ancestors and the dead dwell (reference to the river Styx). And all the architecture down there looks like ancient Greek marble structures 🙂. So you're basically fighting the devil. Especially knowing how evil and Machiavellian his deeds were. He's one of the most sadistic characters in the game, hands down. He also wields a trident lol

Listening to you talk about the time scale(?) with the “1 2 3, 1 2 3” kind of made me think about a theme with Mohg and it’s cool to think about if they wanted to make a connection to Mohg’s blood ritual with the Latin countdown and the timing of the music.

I love this fight, and this track.
However, the lore of Mogh and Miquella makes my skin crawl. Mogh is a tad too obsessed with that Demigod Bussy. 🤣😂🤣

Ehh not quit. Miquella is the *BROTHER* of melania and its not stated that he did anything like that with him either.
All we know for sure is that Mohg kidnapped Miquella and is trying create a god from him.

You're right, but in mogh's case, I think it is very much sexual (and very, very gross).
