Rough Country Budget Lift Install on a Grand Cherokee

  • This is a quick video showing the install of my 2 inch budget lift and 1.5 inch wheel spacer install on my 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee. My camera died a couple of times during filming this, but you get to see 90% of the install. A spring compressor and air tools would have made this job MUCH simpler. If I had to do it over, I would have picked up new shocks and struts to install at the same time, as well as grabbed a spring compressor. Let me know your thoughts or comments! This same lift also fits and installs the same on a Jeep Commander.

    I suggest disconnecting the sway bar with the Jeep still on the ground, and life would be much easier. Jack it up another 4 inches, this allows the lower arm to go further down and the strut assembly goes right in. Not being a smart ass, just trying to help the next one installing. Great video, very helpful.

    great video! pretty hilarious watching you install it upside-down lol springs are a huge pain in the ass! I just did this on a silverado and I used a strut compressor. it helped quite a bit if you ever have to do this again I suggest it highly.

    While you are dropping the rear Panhard rod, you really should lengthen it or the rear axle sits off to one side.

    I am absolutely amazed at what people do with limited hand tools! I used an air compressor, Harbor Freight Earthquake XT air wrench, a set of Gearz box wrenches, 1/2 inch socket wrench with a full contingent of sockets, a massive breaker-bar and spring compressors and it was still a bear to do! And yes...that bolt for that strut stirrup was not cooperative at all. I doused it in lots of rust dissolve and let it sit over night, then more while I was working on it. But I was able to get the Old Man Emu installed!

    Take the bottom of your strut out first before unbolting it up top while removing it. Unbolt the top last. When you go to reinstall it put the top in first and start your nuts and have someone stand on the hub assembly while you maneuver the bottom back in place. The same can be done installing new lift coil or reduce rate coil springs. I know alot of tricks to save time.

  • @MrWolfWinston
    @MrWolfWinston 10 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    You skipped the hardest part IMO - getting the clevis fork bolt out and pulling the strut out. Looks like yours came right out clean. I got stuck with that bottom bolt fully rusted in the bushing, not budging at all.

    • @brianwolford5084
      @brianwolford5084 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      PB Baster and brake cleaner worked for me. Spray it around the bushing area hit it with an impact wrench, 21mm. Pound it with hammer. Repeat the next day until it will move. It took about 3 days for it to free up. Once it's really loose you are almost home free but the threaded end might not want to pass through the bushing you may have to cut the head off the bolt and drive it out from the front.

      @@sasasternja Cao Sasa, izvini sad tek videh pitanje. Generalno bi samo alignment trebalo uraditi i to je to. Ja sam doduse na kraju otisao drugim putem, tj nisam instalirao ovaj spacer nego sam umesto toga koristio adjustable Bilstein 5100 front struts. To je bilo cimanje i po jer zahteva kompresiju i skidanje opruge, sto normalnim ljudima masina odradi u radionici, dok sam ga ja radio ispred kuce, rucno, sa pozajmljenim alatom. S obzirom da sam ziv ostao - uspesno se zavrsilo, mada nije moralo... Ali kako bilo, ono cega se secam je da sto blize dodjes do ili preko 4 inch worth of lift, you start putting more and more strain on other parts like drive shaft etc. Zato obicno 6" lift requires more work than 3.5 - 4" lift. Ne znam koliko ti bilo sta od ovog pomaze, ali sve najbolje - pozdrav!

    Can now appreciate how much easier to do a lift on a Wrangler. Let me suggest a couple of points for those who will be doing this lift. Undo your stabilizer link. That will help to lower the suspension further. Undo brake line bracket which mounts the line to the frame. That will prevent you from puling on the brake line during installation and potentially damaging it. Same goes for abs lines if you have any.

    • @jbrunsonjr
      @jbrunsonjr  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hmmm, that is definitely odd. If they were all the same width, then all should be the same. You might just need an adjustment on your suspension. If it is the rear, check the bushing in the panhard bar to make sure it is not worn out, causing the axle to shift one direction. I hope this helps!

      Great questions! I've had the lift on for a few years now and I can honestly say that I still think this is a great product for the price. I've even changed out my struts and kept the lift on. Just make sure that you go to a good tire place for an alignment as some will totally be thrown off on how to align it. Overall, I would definitely do it again. I did not notice any difference in driveability, just that you are sitting higher is all. No wobbles, shakes or anything else negative from this kit. Heck, I even took it mud drag racing last night!

    Did you have to use extended brake lines? Or add longer shocks later on?
    Thanks

      Off and on, about a weekend job. The rear was easy, the front was a pain. Go for it, he'll love it!

    I tried installing it on my Jeep, but when I try to push the strut back to hook it up to the strut tower, the bottom of my strut hits the CV shaft, so I couldn’t get it to hook up the the strut tower. I don’t know how you guys get this to work?

      You need to get a spring compressor and I recommend replacing struts at the same time

    Did you have to do the pinch weld mod with the 255/75 tires? Any rubbing?

      @jbrunsonjr  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah. I just ended up cutting the fender liner with tin snips and then whacked at the pinch weld with a five pound sledge. All fixed!

    I made same upgrade, now my Grand Cherokee WH Is lifted 2" on rear and about 4" on front... Damn

      @richardrichard5409 ปีที่แล้ว

      Because the front isn't a 1:1 ratio. 1" lift spacer raises front 2".

    Pretty well - I didn't offroad it too much, so not sure about droop. I ended up putting on some coilover shocks on the rear (check out my other video) later on to help level the ride height.
