Write the equation of a parallel line using point slope form

- 👉 Learn how to write the equation of a line that is parallel to a given line. The equation of a line is such that its highest exponent on its variable(s) is 1. (i.e. there are no exponents in its variable(s)). There are various forms which we can write the equation of a line: the point-slope form, the slope-intercept form, the standard form, etc.
When given a point (x, y) through which a line passes and the slope (m) of the line, the equation of the line is given by y - y1 = m(x - x1). For parallel lines, the slopes are equal. Thus given the equation of a line and a point through which the line parallel to the given line passes, then the slope of the second line is equal to the slope of the given line. Having found the slope, we can then use the formula stated above together with the given point to find the required equation.

These videos are so helpful for me as I'm helping my teens with their homework. You teach in a way that is easy for me to grasp and I'm getting good at math I didn't learn in school because my teacher was away in Desert Storm and the sub just turned on Lamb Chop's sing a long every day and gave everyone a B, I kid you not.
I'm a math teacher, and I love your videos, however as a suggestion, I noticed that you picked a point in your example that has the same x and y. I think it would be more impactful to pick a point that doesn't have the same x and y value, because this is a common error that students make when plugging into the equation. Please consider examples like this when making videos. Thanks!

The parallel line will have the same slope
3x +4y =12
4y =- -3x +12
y= (-3/4)x+3
Hence the slope of the parallel line =-3/4 and the line passes through (-2, -2)
Hence the required equation
y -(-2)=(-3/4){ (x - (-2)}
y+2= -3x/4 - 3/2
4(y+2)=-3x -6
-3x -6-4y-8=0
-3x-4y-14=0
3x + 4y +14=0

-(-2) is just saying + 2. negative minus negative is like adding.
