  • Winter is coming! Or at least a fall storm with a nasty taste of winter. We must cleanup our storage so we can maximize the use of space for equipment. Today's job...clean and store headers and the 9370.

      I know this sounds dumb but to help keep the birds away hang fishing line from the ceiling loosely in random heights. I used to work for a lawn care company and was cleaning up a bird mess at a tractor supply and a really old farmer told me to try it. It worked for me in 75% of the places I tried it. The birds don’t like it and will will find a new place. It just takes 1 or 2 to fly into it I think.

      @JoshuaSeed 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @ I'll vouch for that. We strung monofilament over our chicken yard in alaska. Kept out the Owls and Eagles for sure, and even the small birds that would rob chicken feed stopped. Birds hate flying into stuff they can't see. I think the raptors could see it, since they are sight predators but just avoided it.

    You're right, Nick, mice NEVER find a way in. If you make a sign on a 3x5 card and post it close to the ground, they'll read it and obey. Unless they chew it up and use it as part of their nest! BTW that green fiberglass was good because it kept out the direct sun. I could see the rays coming in as you replaced it with clear. Best solution to keeping junk is to keep a list of all things purchased/brought on the farm and what their state is and most importantly, where the item or parts are. My uncle would take pictures of the item (black and white ones, cause that was it back then) and keep a detailed inventory over the years. Really neat system, very useful to determine something like "yeah, i think i can use that boom arm from this 1953 crane i have in building C that's otherwise never going to see use anymore as is".
    In the digital age, this kind of stuff would be a 3 minute endeavor for each major storage area.

    If you didn't put the new window under the metal on the top you will need a ton of silicone to keep it from leaking. And expanding foam is your friend.

      Definitely need to finish sealing it up, I'll go back over and finish it as we were unable to lap it under the metal.

    I think it's harder to remember what I have saved...I'll end up buying something new when I already had the part stashed from years ago...I need some sort of computerized inventory for all my junk.

    Farm equipment really intrigues me. Machines in general too. Could you do a video explaining how a combine/harvester work?

    Just an FYI I would dig into that oil leak a little farther. That is the AFC housing on the top of the pump. There should have been a tamper proof screw in the inner front corner unless someone had turned the fuel up to it previously. That being said once I get that screw out I never replace it and have never had an oil leak. There shouldnt be much pressure under that cover, if there is it sounds like you may have a seal blown out somewhere in the pump allowing it to build pressure under the housing. I'd say something is def. going on in there.

    I vote go big on the bins. You basically have two crops, so there is little need to have a lot of separation, right? You have some bins you may be able to store last years crops. Unless the bigger system to move the grain higher tips the balance to smaller bins. Then you may not even need to put in new infrastructure to get grain into a real tall bin. If there are WIDE and low bins it may be a win.
    Get any sealant under the top and sides of the corrugated windows? Not putting it under the top sheet stops the shingle effect. Caulk plz. The foam will maybe last a year from the UV damage.

    I know I have mentioned it before, but take your grader out and cut you a nice little 1800 foot strip. You have your licence, so pick yourself up a nice clean little taildragger and start building hours and having fun. You could even put some skis on it and have a ball in the winter. Do you still have a passion for flying, or have your interests gone in another direction? Not trying to be nosy, I just remain curious because you have the absolute best place for a nice little strip, in a great part of the country!!
