The orphanage took my heart! I was privileged to have over 400 infants and children come into my home for emergency foster care. I love the idea that Nuns were there ready to wrap their arms and give their hearts to children in such a difficult time. Thank you for sharing this part of Florence.

When I was in Florence, we did go in the duomo but I would say seeing the outside was the best. I liked Florence because it was so walkable. I was on a tour with a choir from a college that sang in many different venues. (I did not sing.). But 4 of us booked a food tour. Our guide took us to several stores and the market where we bought ingredients for a our meal. Then we went to a Da Pinnochio restaurant where the chef cooked us several meal courses. We ate in kind of a wine cellar in the basement of the restaurant. I remember our guide said her kids' snack after school was usually salted fava beans. I also remember sitting in kind of an alcove kitty corner from the David replica with steps you could sit on out of the sun. There were "atmospheric police" making sure people picked up their trash and didn't lay down there. Love your videos and the memories they have invoked.

Snow and Curt! Thank you, in particular, for these last two videos. From the nitty, gritty of the Carrera marble fields, to the David masterpiece, the Duomo and Grand Market, you have presented such a real and personal view. Most touching was the explanation of the Orphanage. With that presentation you showed your precious compassion, and included the necessary dark side of beautiful Florence and the de Medici.

Well now you’ve done it! My husband and I visited Italy as part of our retirement cruise in 2019 and fell in love with the entire country, but especially Florence. I have now, after watching your amazing video, spent at least an hour making preliminary plans for a new trip to Florence. We will be in Barcelona mid-March, 2025, and I am going to create a side trip to Italy so we can spend some time in Florence - my very favorite Italian city. Pompeii and Herculaneum are close behind though. Good grief, Rome was fascinating as well. If you are in Rome I can, as a senior with heart issues, highly recommend a golf cart tour of central Rome as your first activity. That tour will go a long way toward helping you fix in your mind the locations you may want to leisurely walk around and see, as well as the ones you can simply skip altogether because you saw them from the golf cart. I enjoy each of your videos so much and spend most of my time planning travel adventures. Thank you.

Cristofori is credited with inventing the piano - he worked for Medici. Pianoforte comes from the two words piano, meaning quiet or soft, and forte, meaning strong or loud. The Pianoforte has pedals unlike the harpsichord, which allows you to soften or quieten your playing, hence the name.

    • @MadMorti
      @MadMorti ปีที่แล้ว +3

Also, the ironwork you asked about - that one in particular had both hoops and a ring on - so I'd say that this one is for tethering your horse and setting your "standard" or flag in place. Maybe identifying who the horse belonged to? LOL. They could also be used for torches but torches would normally be higher up the building. You'll see a lot of them around Italy, all kinds of fantastical beasts etc.

Seems like a lot of people are reliving favorite trips or planning new ones thanks to you two. 😄If you can’t get to Italy may I recommend Sarasota FL to see a replica of David at the Ringling Museum. It’s right across the street from the airport and it’s one of our city symbols. From the back of course. 😜There’s even a free admission day. It’s a beautiful little city with something for everyone except mt climbers, but alas the closest to walking the streets of Italy is going to be Epcot. I’m loving your journey!

hi Curt. Hi Snow. Most beautiful and full of history. But I must admit, I was cringing at all the people you were sharing space with.😮. I think PTSD grabbed me after 2020. I won’t go where there’s lots of people. I’m working my way through it. I had double pneumonia in January 2022. 15 days in isolation and almost died. All they did for me was oxygen. Care back then was totally different. I lived through sure will power and prayer. The young dr I had prayed over me daily. I’m blessed and will never take my health for granted. I had never had the flu or anything. And Snows health scare freaked me out too. I’m so happy you two show us beautiful places that I no longer desire to go myself. Maybe one day life will return to normal in my head. Love you both ❤

It's understandable, these last few years have had a big impact on physical and mental health and it's no small thing, especially for those who are more vulnerable. I didn't get sick at all and I still have the habit of holding my breath if people walk close to me. But oddly enough, when I went to Spain, to treat my mental illness, I was so in awe of the beauty that I forgot all about my dislike of crowds - to a point, it was easier in smaller cities, Barcelona was more difficult. But coming home to winter and rising COVID cases had me holding my breath again. I can imagine it would be so much worse for people who did get sick and those who are immune compromised! And then of course there are those who didn't fear the pandemic, but suffered mentally from being disconnected socially and that's no small thing either, although the duration of their suffering was shorter. All of us have been affected in different ways and it can take time to process and work out how to live again, in a way that suits us personally. Wishing you a brighter future 💛

Thanks Snow for telling us about the orphanage. As a young woman I gave up a child for adoption and it is never easy. Florence is so beautiful, can you imagine how busy it will be in tourist high season, oh my goodness. My husband is a soap stone carver and would be in his glory to see the marble carvings and stone buildings. Wow, no shortage of food in Italy, how does one choose, you two will have to do a lot of walking to keep the pounds off. My Italian neighbours where I grew up always walked after their meals, good for the digestion and keeping their weight down, plus they worked extremely hard. 🌷

When we were in Florence in 1976, we stayed in a pensione across from the doors of the Duomo. There were no lineups, and you could enter at will. (There was a fair bit of scaffolding at the time as they were cleaning the marble) . The same for the Academia and David...possibly 10 to 15 people were there with us and it was free if I remember correctly. We were on a cycle/tent trip for the year and Florence just blew us away. We saw so much in that year and now when I watch videos of peoples trips to Europe I am so tankful we saw it all before the immense crowds you see now. (an example of this is when we went to Stonehenge...it was just us, no fences, a few sheep and a man cutting hay and we were able to spend hours there)

Great video. When I visited Florence many many years ago, I went all the way up the dome. You start your way up trough spiral stairs inside the church's walls, but once you reach the dome itself, you find that there are actually two distinct domes, an inner dome an an outer dome which is seen in the video. The stairs that lead to the top wind their way up in between those two, layered domes. Very impressive stuff, even more so considering the era this was built.

Wow absolutely a beautiful place, my mother in law was from Italy she met my father in law during the war he was military 🪖 they got married over there and then moved to USA right after and as soon as she came to usa her city was bombed and all her family was killed a very sad story but she felt if she hadn't met my father in law she feels she would have died too! And I also believe she would have been killed too!!!! Lived in the USA for the rest of her life and never went back!! A very sad story Thanks guy for sharing very interesting!!! Cheers guys 🍻 ❤❤❤

What a fabulous video. Many of these things I had never heard of and I am in awe of being able to see them. My favorite thing is the orphanage story. So sad but also so wonderful. And that church wow. Thanks for sharing all your travels with us I really look forward to your videos.

Good morning! I love Firenze(Florence) so so so much. ❤❤ Il Papiro is a beautiful marble paper studio/shop that I stumbled upon there and I still order journals online to gift friends now and again. The Duomo colors are different types of marble, but still marble.

My favorite city..I love Cinque Terre, but Florence was beautiful. I spent 3 days in Rome and wished I hadnt..Many blessings on this trip. So lovely to see you there considering the Italian hospital in Argentina was so instrumental in your recovery. ❤️

Great walk down memory lane for me. At 21yo I spent 3 months living in Florence. I'll never forget the art & the gelati from Vivole

It's a very busy city this time of year. Although the city is beautiful with lots of art. The last city of the five that you visited speaks to my soul!

You lucky guys! I tried visiting Florence once but got caught in a traffic jam for hours and had to give up. But I managed Rome and Venice. Extraordinary places even if some people put Venice down as a tourist trap ( it is the prettiest trap I ever visited)

So glad you're in Florence! It's one of my favorite cities. There's so much to do and see and eat. I hope you're having a blast! Please eat a lot of focaccia (foh-kah-cha) pizzas and gelato on behalf of all of us. I'm sure you've moved on past Florence but I hope you got a chance to see the Uffizi Gallery too!

It's so funny to me, because this is the first time I see you walking around a place I visited myself. Walking through the same market, seeing the same things. Florence was one of my favourite places ever and I would have moved there immediately if I had the chance.

Thank you again for providing such an interesting history on another magnificent city like Florence. I was there and boy the Duomo is massive to say the least. Seeing David in person was awesome for me and to see the scale of that magnificent sculpture, photos don’t do it justice. I was in awe when I saw it too! Great tour of the marketplace and I had to buy a leather purse. Snow you show such beautiful restraints from buying goodie’s at every place you visit. 👏Wonderful tour and capturing all the best places of Florence 👏 and it brought back memories of my time there. I loved Italy so much with all the cheese, wine, pasta, and pastries! 😊
Are you going to take the train to Venice? Another wonderful place to visit! 🎥 ❤️👍👏

What a great video! I loved your stories and everything you showed! A+ episode. I was in Italy in 2015. There is nothing like it. I was there in October/ November and didn’t have those crowds. Was in 5 different cities.
In Milan I walked to the top of the Duomo. There was a longer line to take the elevator to the top and I wanted the challenge. Both had an entrance fee. It was a spiral staircase with uneven steps and different widths. The top was rewarding. You step outside and are right there with the beautiful statues. The way you felt being in Italy was the same I felt. Nothing like it!

The person who invented the piano is Bartolomeo Cristofori. The pianoforte is an early piano invented by the same person. The entire outside of the Duomo is faced with polychrome marble - white, green and red and was added in the 19th century. It is actually constructed with a double shell which was molded from limestone and marble.
