I was on my way to Moreland plumbing to throw down $90 bucks on a replacement valve when I hoped your video would help me. AND IT DID. Thank you so much. It’s working*******
Wow! Thank you so much. I've been trying to get this fixed for over a year and was about to give up and just pay the outrageous plumber price to get a whole new shower. This was perfectly explained and easy to follow. I searched for fixes many times before and never saw this video. So glad I tried 1 last search. Thanks again for taking the time to help so many people.
I was fixing to go down a rabbit-hole of endless troubleshooting and a multitude of spare parts, and after all that and nothing worked, most likely some serious demolition to totally redo everything; but, thankfully, I stumbled upon your video, and within 15 minutes, the problem was completely fixed. Thank you for putting this video together and explaining and demonstrating the resolution in such a clear and easy way.
Thanks for your trouble shooting tutorial. I was affected by the shower hammer also. Wow, it was so NOISY! After taking out the mixing valve I noticed that granular debris was partialing blocking the the inlet to the valve mixer. In addition, the hot water mini blue backflow preventer was clogged also . I used compressed air to blow it out. I was going to replace the unit because it but it was going to take a couple of days. Until then, I just cleaned up the pressure balance unit up and lubed up the "0" ring with silicone grease and reassembled the unit. I also bought a new shower head. Most likely that debris came from my new whole house filtration system that I had installed 10 days earlier. The granules looked liked the carbon bed material that normally would would just remained in place but got agitated and went through the system post filter. I also checked in my crawl space to see if any water pipe clamps that need to be more secure. So far so good.
Thanks for the helped. My entire house will vibrate when adjusting the hot water towards the cold water. But after I removed the washer like how you suggested in the video it fixed my issue. I can finally have visitors at my house now.
Thank you so much for this video! I just ordered my third replacement cartridge from American Standard (Originally installed in 2015) . They last about 1-2 years then start to hammer. My home is a 1950 home with various plumbing - which is part of the problem. Did your o-ring removal on the diaphragm shafts, and reinstalled. It works like a charm!!! Really appreciate your sharing this with us all.
Awesome video! We haven’t had the money to get a Plummer here to rip us off. So we’ve been stuck on either really hot or really cold showers, just because the water hammer on warm. Bleeding the lines wouldn’t work. This was a money saver. Thank you!
My hero! Understanding how to disassemble the cartridge and pressure balance valve was the most valuable lesson. New parts are available on eBay and Amazon. Thank you!
WOW, I used the dental tool and popped the o-rings out. Start to finish was less than 30 mins!!!!! Great video and thank you for sharing what was probably a lengthy exploratory mission.
I know you posted this over a year ago but I just want to say thanks. I think the term water hammer was confusing the other so called experts. You nailed it, it was definitely in the pressure equalizer. I pulled my old one out and tried to get the o rings off but the plastic was so brittle it snapped the little ends off. I tried it like that but it dripped. I went to the depot and found a replacement anti scald and what the heck I replaced the cartridge too. It appears it's done it. I can get it to hammer by flushing the toilet which tells me the valve is working but if it comes back when it's just mixing I'll pull the o rings. Thanks for posting this!
You saved my life...the same issue you had I have or now had and thanks to you I was able to repair my bathroom issue...I went to home depot for assistance and they had no idea as to what I was referring to...thank you very much for looking out...have a blessed day!
Thank you for the creative solution to solve our water hammer problem. We have been dealing with our problem (not as bad as yours) for nearly 10 years in our master bedroom shower. I followed your steps and pulled out both the back flow stops and the rubber gaskets and our problem is solved!
Thank you so very much. I removed the small washers just a you suggested. Fixed the problem that my local "experts" did not know how to repair other than all new cartrigdge and internals. No more banging pipes at any temp!!!! Great video!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Garren King you are the Man! Followed your instructions and Walla! No more Hammering. I can't Thank You enough..... American Standard should change their design!
Thank you for this video. Very well explained. I was getting ready to cut holes in the wall. I thought there was loose pipes in the wall rattling or something. I am on a well so the pressure goes up and down throughout the shower. It is very frustrating. I am going to tackle this tomorrow. Thanks again.
I’m thrilled that you posted this video. I have an AMerican Standard kit and ever since we installed it 3 years ago it hammers. I can’t wait to remove the rings and have a relaxing shower. So helpful. Thanks!!
Thank you so much for sharing this video. I don't understand why American Standard does not remove these seals on the cartridge in the updated version. They have to know its a design flaw at this point and they don't seem to be needed in the cartridge for it to work properly.
Thanks so much! This even helped with a 20yr old version of faucet, slightly different but helped immensely just knowing how disassembly should go and that I would need to get creative to get the handle off. (I was able to pop off that back cover before taking off the handle so that I could see the pipes - and see that I wasn't pulling too hard on them. Then I was able to grip the big brass bulb-looking cover in order to help pull the handle off.) I didn't have the same washer problem; I had sediment in the tiny hot water spring valve. Cleaned out pebbles and sand so that it was springy again. Reassembled. Never had better water pressure .... and all for free. Thanks again!
HELP PLEASE?? Thank you. Very informative and helpful. We had two AS Hampton shower valves installed in 1999. The lesser used one started flowing only warm water and affected the nearby sink and clothes washer temps. Then it started leaking. Slow at first...... Plumber came out and 9 days/$300 later replaced the cartridge and (later) the balancer. Fixed! He left me the packages. Just recently the more used one started hammering (just like in Garren King video) and hot out of the cold and cold out of the hot. Parts came in 2-days ($60+/- from Amazon) and a quick run to the hardware store for a $10 handle. Water hammer fixed! EXCEPT!!! hot out of the cold and cold out of the hot. Took it out and flipped the balancer over. Same thing. I mean, it works very well, good water temp and no hammer, buy hey I cannot leave it in this silly condition. ANY SUGGESTIONS??
If the hot and cold became switched on its own and not after it was taken apart then my suggestion would be to make sure that the hot limit stop has not come loose and allowed the stem to slip. The valve and stem assembly can be seen at 11:40 in my video where I point out that it is labeled "down" which puts the hot limit on top. Try loosening the set screw on the hot limit stop and rotate the stem 180 degrees and try that. Let me know if it works.
@@roestreet THANK YOU. A perfect diagnosis and solution. 3/32" allen wrench to loosen the stop collar. Turned 180* and tightened stop collar. Jiggled just a bit to get it lined up. Perfect!! +1000 YTDIY Points to you sir.
Before trying any solution try reducing the water pressure coming in to the shower mixing valve. There are two ways. Most valves have flat head screw valves on the sides to allow replacing the cartridge without shutting off main water. Use these valves to reduce pressure. open these valves half way only (most likely it is the hot water side that is the problem so you can only reduce the hot water flow). The other way is to install isolation valves to the bathroom water supply, you can then reduce pressure with these valves. These valves come in handy when you need to do any plumbing work in the bathroom, you can shut off water to that bathroom only while working, keeping the rest of the house with water service.
Had same problem used to open sink valve before using shower. Found the first cartridge was wrong one , was installed upside down, they filed off the tab to make it work. Installed proper cartridge ,problem went away!
This has been very educational. I have the Williamsburg version and have 2 issues: 1.A recent onset of water dripping from the faucet that is getting worse and worse and I even hear a hissing sound 2. Water hammer in the entire house when shutting off faucets/washing machine etc. THis started at the same time the shower went weird. Maybe a coincidence but so frustrating. As I was googling, I came upon this video. American Standard's CC has not been helpful and want receipts for this unit, which of course I do not have as a plumber installed it. My question is : If you are having dripping front the spout and a hiss vs the hammer you showed when mixing water, do I need the piece you show or is there a different cartridge piece? Thank you so much for this video! I just fixed my cabrio washer suspension rods with a You Tube video and have replaced 2 control panels on a range and Cabrio dryer with such DIY videos. Dorothy
Thanks so much for responding. I'm sure parts are and many have been replaced. I'm going to just have a plumber in. We installed 2 dampers above the valves near the washing machine in the basement many years ago. I need a good diagnosis vs just swapping out the cartridge, however, I think that is shot regardless as water is heavily dripping out the spout but when I raise the diverter on the spout, it seems to slow down. It is all connected. Water hammer, not sure what's up there. If it's dripping, are there 2 things to change? It seems there is the balance and a cartridge. A.S. CC has been useless. Never again. Moen was always great.
Thank you for the video. Although after taking it apart the second time, I found my particular issue. The green valve where the hot water goes through was filled with sediment. The same sediment that I’m assuming started the issue with the old one. I installed a completely new piece and it’s gone. If it comes back I am certain that more sediment will be the culprit. A recently installed water softener is my hopes to stop this.

Hoping you might be able to answer a question about the American Standard pressure balancing shower valve. Hope this helps.
