MULE COUNTRY: Stampeding bison in a lightning storm! - Custer State Park (S1 EP2)

  • Join us as we head out on the French Creek Trail of Custer State Park.
    Know for it's 30+ creek crossings, French Creek trail is beautiful. The weather threatened to storm as we left the campground and within a couple hours we found ourselves in one heck of a thunderstorm. Deciding it was too dangerous to stay up on the ridge tops with all the lightning, we cut across to ride in the lower draws. When out of nowhere a stampeding herd of cow and calf bison came running up over the ridge, trying to get out of the storm. Getting by them, we continued on, encountering multiple other herds of bison and two large bulls who were contently grazing on the side of the road. All in all our ride was 16 miles long, we were soaked from head to toe and we crossed French creek 35 times.
    Have you ever ridden at Custer State Park? Let's hear in the comments!
    Do you have another horse vacation you suggest?

    Wow, nice job. Though the rain and storm made your task as a videographer more difficult, it made your story that much better. I love your technique of switching back and forth between two camera operators, gives your film more perspective. Keep it up..
    The realty of the island mountain ranges on the plains are those storms. Some of the worst rain and hail I’ve ever been in were in the black hills. You guys and your ponies handled it like champs.
    Those bison in Custer were and are part of the survivors from the true wild buffalo herds of the past..The gene pool has know cattle in them, unlike most other commercially raised bison you see in other places. Many spirits ride with you in that place..

    Beautiful ride, I totally enjoyed it with my morning coffee. Custer State Park is beautiful. When I was there in 2016 they had herds of mules that came right up to my pickup, I heard they were all lost during one of the fires. Is that correct?

    Jason and Alyssa did it right. They gave the Bison plenty of room and kept their eyes on them as they passed them by.
    A heads up for all. When a bison raises his tail, he is signaling he is disturbed and is ready for aggression. If you get too close and tail comes up, it's time for you to backoff. And I don't mean to think about backing off, I mean back off now, because those fellers ain't joking. The Bison may be used to people these days, but they are still one of the largest WILD animals in North America. Don't be one of the airheads that wins a Darwin award while trying to get a cool selfie. You might also consider that even if you survive the attack, you could still have a hospital bill that would bankrupt a millionaire.

    • @MTN_BUILT
      @MTN_BUILT  19 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Haha yeah we weren’t going to get any closer than we had to! When those cows and calves came running over the hill right at us in the lightning storm we cut sharp up the hill and out of their way. We didn’t like riding so close to those big bulls by the roadway, but they didn’t seem to be concerned with us so we watched carefully as we slipped on by. One of those bulls would give our mules a run for their money if they decided to charge! No need to get a mule or us injured by a bison horn or have a bison come over the top of us. 😂👍🏼

      @@todd1808 fires and beetles can cause trees to die. Eventually they fall over, if they get hung up in another tree posing danger, or fall across the trail they are removed for safety reasons ☺️👍🏼

    Man I just love your videos so much and also what you post on instagram. I would say within the past year and a half I have tried to take riding horses as serious as I can without owning one and ride once a week just so I can keep learning and training. With that being said if y’all ever get the opportunity I would love to see an in depth video about factors that got you into mules and horses, your background, and how you became educated on taking care of them and knowing what the best equipment to buy would be for the mules and horses as well as for yourselves (chinks and hats and riding gear). Also last two questions I was hoping to have answered is what type of trailer do y’all have and how much was it? And what do y’all do for your careers. I’m a pilot who lives in southern Utah so I know this lifestyle will be very possible hopefully soon some day. Cheers and thanks for what you do!

    • @MTN_BUILT
      @MTN_BUILT  ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Thank you so much for the kind words! That really means a lot to us 😊 We definitely want to make a video sharing our backgrounds, and why we chose to buy our mules, so that is in the works.
      As far as gear, we kept it minimal because we keep our budget pretty tight… we do taxidermy for a living, and want to make sure we’re setting ourselves up for the future as well as enjoying ourselves right now lol So we started with mid quality used saddles (it’s most important that they fit your horse/mule), Alyssa traded work for her chinks and I built a pair 😊 but they’re not necessary unless you’re riding in a lot of gnarly oak rush or something like that 😊
      We bought a used 4 horse trails west trailer with some rust, but it has a good floor and it’s 100% safe for our equines and it was $11k. We’re fixing it up so we can camp in the gooseneck portion. 😊
      Don’t ever hesitate to reach out if you have more questions!
      PS. I (Jason) didn’t start riding or get my first horse until after graduate school, so I can tell you from experience, it’s an amazing hobby to get into, and it can become a passion pretty quick. 😊 When I started, I was overwhelmed with information, so I chose to just pay attention to one horseman. I chose to dive into Buck Brannaman’s resources and I’m glad I did 😊
