Why is this lockdown even necessary in the area shown on screen?! Just because it may work in some regions of the world, does not mean it will work in all. The housing is so close together, the reporter even said that “..people sharing 1 room shacks..”. The social distancing that works in other countries just will not work in that environment. From the images it does not look like the hygiene standards are sufficient to stop the spread either. Why risk mass social unrest, which could be extremely violent and kill many people, with a measure that is unlikely to do anything? They have to think of other ways to tackle the outbreak in areas such as this.

My own students have shown me that the townships are not as bustling as they normally are. Why is this lockdown even necessary in the area shown on screen?! Just because it may work in some regions of the world, does not mean it will work in all.
The housing is so close together, the reporter even said that “..people sharing 1 room shacks..”. The social distancing that works in other countries just will not work in that environment. From the images it does not look like the hygiene standards are sufficient to stop the spread either.

My own students have shown me that the townships are not as bustling as they normally are. We will keep hoping and praying that we can keep these numbers low to protect our South African (and African) brothers and sisters 💪🏼
