"Both Sides Attacked Me!" Slavoj Zizek on the Israel and Palestine Conflict.

  • The 'most dangerous philosopher in the West' diagnoses our current geopolitical nightmare and offer an urgent and radical call to action.
We hear all the time that we're moments from doomsday. Around us, crises interlock and escalate, threatening our collective survival. Protestors and politicians repeatedly call for action, but still we continue to drift towards disaster. We need to do something. But what if the only way for us to prevent catastrophe is to accept that we're already five minutes past zero hour?

I totally agree, the stress to be in a position of having to self-explain yourself in order to clarify people's minds is, not only once but many times. Might the capacity for people to underdtand complex arguments is going down over the time? I don't understand, he is clear but some still don't get it. Or maybe some personal ideals are to intensified in these times that rationalisation is not an option anymore for them. At least I hope things will calm down for Zizek. But for israel and palestine, there's still a long season, sad but true.

Thinking from the other's point of view was not unknown to European antiquity. Herodotus talks about other peoples' customs in terms of 'weirdness' (and even 'abomination', like a peoples, from the region that is today Crimea, funereal practices of eating their dead), but not without pausing and reflecting afterward that they too (these remore others) may equally be disturbed by 'our' customs, find 'us' weird (also allowing for the possibility that from their point of view 'our' burying or burning the dead on a pyre may be considered 'reprehensible'). And let us not mention tragedies where not only is the other not dehumanised but it is seen as having an equally powerful claim. Descartes comes after a long line of acknowledging the other.

Emphathizing is inherent to humans, it takes a lot of effort (miseducation, misinformation, propaganda...) to make someone feel comfortable with dehumanizing the "other" to the point where the distinction between combattants and civilians becomes not blurred, but practically erased!

    • @allegory6393
      @allegory6393 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@dayegilharno4988 I am afraid it is the other way around. Although we, as species, are not incapable of altruism and empathy (thank heavens!), committing evil acts is far more prosaic than good actis. Evil does not require the organisation of energies and that of moral and critical resources the good does. In fact evil revels in the pleasures of unorganised energies, visceral and illiterate drives (and their immediate satisfaction). Recognition of the claims of the other as equally human is an act of a critical and courageous intellect and heart - and it presupposes a world where such are still a faint possibility. Propaganda and misinformation are so successful in spreading (like bushfire) hate and lies because what they spread clicks with uncritical, thoughtlessly reacting to immediate impressions beings in a world that is bent on destroying even the remotest possibility of the good. Our dark times are becoming darker and darker faster than before.

@@allegory6393 Hmm... Had to look up "prosaic", just to make sure. Interesting choice of words, from my limited perspective. I just "know" that I am acting from outside of my, let's say: "spiritual" center when I am acting egoistically, even before the fact and still without being able to influence the decision consciously. In contrast to acting altruistically (at least within the limits of my understanding after the fact), when I feel right at home with the decision but get the impact of people disagreeing with me and struggling to "keep the faith".
There seems to be a divide between knowing what is the right thing to do and actually deciding to do the right thing... I feel like the "Recognition of the claims of the other as equally human..." comes more easily to me than denying that shared humanity. At the same time I face the reality of being a terrible human being, considering my actions, words and thoughts over the past 50+ years - WHEN I make an effort to stop gaslighting myself.
I believe that the term "unorganized" is rather fitting: Free of moral judgements, it describes a state of mind that is counterproductive to everything I hold dear, on a totally subjective level. There is no order and no morals outside of what we want this universe to be. That is Nihilism at its best interpretation!

Let's be honest, this is now a full-on religious war. Netanyahu can say what he likes about fighting terrorism, about protection for international Jewry etc etc but in reality, he just dreams of reclaiming the Biblical Israel on religious grounds.
Meanwhile Hamas have religious dream of turning Isreal/ Palestine into a caliphate where Jews, Muslims and Christians live under Islamic laws. The dream to recreate Moorish Spain in the holy land.

It seems like this to me:
The war between Hamas and Israel is a glaring example of the consequences of BRAINWASHING:
Genetically, Palestinians and Israelis are the same nation (Canaanites and some minorities of neighboring nations), but "historically", with the Mesopotamian attack 2.600 years ago, they were separated into the enslaved part (Palestinians) and the exiled part (Israelis).
The Palestinian part remained in the original territory, but was forcibly Arabized and Muslimized.
The Israelite part retained a mental identity, but was forced to live without a territory for the next few millennia.
Everything else was just the logical consequences of the initial "sin". (I conclude that the Canaanites did not support slave-owning relations, but the Mesopotamians did and therefore attacked. Later, the same territory was occupied by the slave-owning Romans.)
History is getting an important example of what the consequences of brainwashing are, finally it will be able to be properly observed and defined. Mental problems do not disappear with time. After 2600 years, they are the same as they were when they were formed due to the attack of the Persians from what was then Mesopotamia).
Knowing the mind itself is the next milestone in the evolution of humanity. If problems of the mind are not properly addressed and treated, they cause death.
The dire consequences of any distortion of ethics are inevitable. In their own time, they return to where they came from. They become as painful as when they were formed. They demand repair of the damage.
All people want and need about the same, but great pressures with possible consequences in mental processing, from the creation of them ahead, cause drastic differences. This cannot be solved physically.
I hope that the "ideological brainwashers" (to cover up imperial crimes) will now understand this and stop doing this as soon as possible in other forcibly subjugated parts of the world.

As an Arab socialist or Ba’athist, I agree with Zizek. Being deeply religious myself, I won’t whitewash the history of religions or the history of Western esotericism. The truth is that there have been some truly despicable things carried out in the name of religious belief. The best way to counter religious intolerance is through the creation of a proper system of jurisprudence or legal theory - one which outlines a secular society, where neither religious law nor atheism can be weaponized by the state (as was the case under 20th century Marxist-Leninist regimes that were committed to the eradication of religious belief and the occult). People in the comments section who say that Zizek is whitewashing things forget that he is a leftist; and that, as leftists, we are strongly opposed to divine government (i.e. Islamic theocracy). Hamas is not an Arab socialist or Ba’athist political coalition like the PLO is. They are an antisemitic, misogynistic, and right-wing extremist organization committed to the establishment of a clerical fascist state. There is a difference between anti-Zionism, or criticism of the state of Israel, and antisemitism, which led to pogroms against Jews and ultimately to the Holocaust as well.
We are supporters of the Palestinians, not ultraorthodox or ultraconservative theocrats.

It's not complicated - one side has all the power in the region and is doing an apartheid state, expanding illegal settlements and brutalizing Palestinians for 75 years. The other side responds to the apartheid violence almost the only way they can (also committing war crimes, for which both sides must be punished), being trapped and abused inside an open air prison, and also horribly mistreated in West Bank (both of these worse than apartheid, while Israel proper is also an apartheid state, with apartheid laws). So what should be removed first, what is the cause to all of this violence? The apartheid state, or the fight against this apartheid state? Of course it's the apartheid state that must be dismantled and restructured first - violence won't end otherwise, they have all the power to do it, the other side doesn't.

@@user-wn1qp2mw6w The entire premise of the Apartheid state is due to the Zionist regime’s desires to remain the demographic majority and power. Otherwise the idea of it being a Jewish state will be challenged. Therefore, they treat Arabs differently in different parts of the OPT and Israel depending on their location and particular concerns. Fundamentally they are treated differently from Israeli Jews.
The rights of Arabs/Palestinians rank in the following hierarchy: Israeli National>West Bank> East Jerusalem> Gaza > Exile/diaspora. You can mover down (or to the right) of the hierarchy, but each step will limit your rights, and you can’t move up the hierarchy (to the left). A Jewish Israeli however, can move between this hierarchy as they please, while having more and full rights at all stages, and always more than any Arab at any one spot. Again, they are treated differently from Israeli Jews.
In the West Bank for example, Palestinians are subject to a military occupation administration even when they are not in Israel proper (remember Israel doesnt recognize the two state solution or Palestinian sovereignty). Israeli settlers in the West bank are subject to civil courts where as the Palestinians are subject to Israeli military courts, which give unreasonably high conviction rates, sometimes long periods of confinement without even representation, make arrest of minors and can include torture. Why are Israeli settlers treated differently than to Palestinians in the WB? Israel applies different systems of governance and courts on both groups in the WB extraterritorially and unequally. For example a settler committing a crime goes to an Israeli civil court, whereas a Palestinian goes to a military court, often witheld without trail for ling periods of time, in a hearing that has always been condemned as unfair when compared to international standards of fair trails. Why does Military Order 101 Regarding Prohibition of Incitement and Hostile Propaganda Actions punish and criminalizes Palestinians for attending and organizing an assembly of 10 or more people without a permit for an issue that “may be construed as political”. And then why does it not define what is meant by “political”, effectively banning protests, including peaceful protests, while stipulating up to 10 years’ imprisonment and/or hefty fines for anyone breaching it?
Why is a Palestinian’s ability to build homes and move within the west bank restricted and why is the human registry restricted by an Israeli Military administration if they are not Israeli citizens? Why are there tens of thousands of palestinians married to foreign nationals, who cant bring their nationals over because Israels Military administration blocks adding these individuals to the registries, effectively closing them out to immigration to their spouses?
Clearly they are subjected to forms of subjugation and domination even when they are not Israeli citizens, and not in Israel proper, because they are Arab and thats the definition of Apartheid. Remember, under the Rome Statute, the crime against humanity of apartheid means inhumane acts committed in the context of an institutionalised regime of systematic oppression and domination by one racial group over any other racial group or groups.
And how about the discriminatory zoning laws for Israeli Arabs? Why are refugees not allowed to return to their homes in Israel if all Jews world wide can “the law of return”? Why, according to a 2016 analysis by Mossawa Center of the Israeli Ministry of Educations, do Israeli Arabs get a third of the funding per capita for education and other social welfare programs than their Jewish Israeli counterparts? Why is it so difficult to get building permits for Arab Israelis too? Arab Israelis don’t need to join the army, but miss out on social benefits that come with it, which is fair - but why are the ultra orthodox who also dint join the army granted access to those services?
Why are 75% of Gazans registered as non Gazan refugees in the UN Relief? Why are they restricted from using 35% of their agricultural land, 85% of the sea and 100% of the sky by the Israeli occupation?
Why is it only that the Eastern Jerusalem Palestinians the ones who are revoked of their ID cards retroactively, if they cannot prove that Jerusalem is their “center of life”? Why does this jot happen to Israeli Jews?
There are mannnyyyyy more points that make Israel an Apartheid state, but above are a few. Its so overwhelming and multilayered the best thing you should do to read about it. Have you read any of the reports? If you have I doubt you would be doubting the conclusion.
You can go read any of the following: Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch, The UN Special Rappetoires, B’Tselem, the ESCWA report, Yesh Din, the International Federation if Human Rights. Pick and choose there are plenty more.

You are smart man Slavoj ; so it is time for you to say that the context is Islam ! which cannot accept this fact on religious grounds - the land from the realm of Islam cannot pass onto the realm of war , that the land that for certain time was part of caliphate cannot to be ruled by anyone else - especially Jews, people that are so hated and despised in Islam on the deepest level - this is the heart of the context of this and all other wars. Not the political issue , only the religious one! Division of the land won’t solve it , at least it did not for the last 75 years - and for the near future! 20% of Israel population are Arabs mostly Muslims - with all legan rights of citizenship- this is the oboe possible path forward- secular strong Jewish state where non Jews can prosper and be safe from radical Islamism

    • @SnakeHelah
      @SnakeHelah 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

Not to worry! It's not genocide. Just that if there's war, the Quran permits Muslims to take prisoners of war, and subsequently use the women as sex slaves, ransom or execute the men and convert the children.
But no worries! It's not genocide. And even if you're taken as a prisoner of war, you will still be fed, clothed, etc. too bad you have to be a slave though!
Now let's imagine if Israel followed this logic. Doesn't paint a pretty picture does it?
