Excellent tips, very well explained. Thank you. i know what my problem is. I am not leaving myself enough "room" and I am not relaxing waiting for the painting to be what I want to be. i need to slow down at the blocking stage and believe in my skills that I can get the look I want at the final stages. Hey Jola, remember that having a DESIGN is vital to the success of your painting. Skill alone won't do it, you must plan for the road ahead. Of course, yes, believe in yourself 100% but you must know where you are going. Know what I mean? Cheers for the comment. :)
Hello Andrew! Again what an incredibly detailed and helpful demonstration of technique. I went to community college and took some art classes years ago and learned barley a fraction of what I've learned from the work you've published here on YT. I must speak for many when I say this stuff is invaluable to us. I've had a lot of trouble self teaching myself with oil, esp the beginning (Block in) and middle stages of a painting, be it digital or traditional. I find myself getting discouraged after the block in stage. Not fully knowing how to build up the proper technique of establishing the mid range details. I do however feel I excel in the final detail stage... just hard for me to get there. Anyways, keep these things coming you have a cult following!!

I think I'd been looking for a blue one, as on Facebook, but on my computer this icon is grey so it didn't register with me!! Not the smartest computer person on the planet - far from it!!!! Thanks for putting all these great videos out! I was hoping that one day you could do a video about brush management during the painting process... i.e. when do you change your brushes in the process and how do you keep your palette from becoming mud? I love seeing the process of the paint going on canvas, but would love to see what's going on technically with the palette at the same time. I have never been able to find any good instruction about the fundamental mechanics of painting.

I enjoyed watching the brushstrokes in the blocking-in! I was fascinated by your color choices while referring to a b/w photo. Q: During your earlier years as a artist what helped you "see" color and their variations from life or photos and then translate them into oil paint colors to apply to canvas? I'm good with mixing to create different colors with the basics but seeing and recognizing colors in the subject (life or photos) is quite a challenge for me. Hope you understand what I mean. :) Well done again, Andrew! ;)

A perfect video as always. I wish I had seen you work years ago as I would be so much better by now. I have been doing very detailed drawings on my canvas and going straight in with detail for about 20yrs. As I taught myself I didn't know any better. Now since following you I can see a big difference in my work it is more alive somehow. Even my husband who has always been ultra critical of everything I do to, - his excuse is it helps me improve- has noticed that my work has gone up a notch. Thank you.

as always " impressed " i don't know why but these days i m really addicted to ur videos , I can't get enough of them , the quality , lighting , the way u explain it , even if i never experienced oil painting because I m still learning to sketch , but I have a question how much time does it take u to finish a painting !? more specifically oceans and portrait !

The time it takes to finish a painting depends entirely on the subject and size. This particular painting in this video, will take around 2 - 3 weeks.

Do you ever block with acrylic and then put oils over the acrylic? BTW - your videos are the best out there!
Love your videos Andrew! Can you address composition in ocean paintings? What do you consider when considering how you lead your viewers eye? When using cliffs, rocks, sand and water how do you know what to put in and leave out......There is so much to look at as is in any landscape. Looking forward to more lessons.

Hi Andrew, since you taught everyone about blocking in, could you please produce a session on Values? This is probably the biggest hurdle for all the self-taught painters because all they get is a gray value card that doesn't help to identify the relationship between value scales on a surface (eye training I mean). Some areas become more sunk-in because an unnecessary darker color was used, whereas a very light color was applied to an area which perhaps needs a value three steps below. You already highlighted this on your color mixing video but it perhaps needs a separate chapter.

Audiobooks and podcasts mainly. Audible is the best. You can learn while you paint. I listen to stuff on business, motivation, marketing and history.

No, I don't use this method. THat's not to say it's not a good way to go, I just prefer keeping to the oils. Some say it can be easier with the block in, working with acrylics, and can save on costs, because oils generally are more expensive.

Suggestion for your next Quick Tip video - could you demonstrate a bit how you "tone down", "push down", and "mute" your colors? I feel like I understand the color mixing and matching from your previous videos, but I'm not entirely sure how to mute and dull colors effectively.

toning down, or muting a color is basically mixing in some of that colors compliment, or opposite on the color wheel. so, to "tone down " a red, you would add a little green. with blue, a little orange, and so on. this neutralizes the color and pushes it towards greyish hue. I know you didn't ask me but i hope that helps.

Interesting Australian, American, English accent. Interesting video too, thanks! This is just the right sort of video to encourage beginners to have a go, like me. Hope you post one of how to finish the painting. As Bradley has mentioned your reference is black and white and looks likes like a copy of one of your paintings. Does the tonal black and white help with blocking in and would you recommend this for beginners?
Yeah, I will post the next two phases of this painting in particular soon.
The drawing is a tonal study produced in photoshop, using a wacom tablet and stylus. It's just to help guide me with the composition.

Just few questions though. You layer all your canvas with burnt sienna before painting. Any difference it makes while painting? How much thick must the layer be?
Apply the sienna very thinly. It have so be dry first before you start painting too. It makes a difference to the perceived colours as you blocking, and because it's a mid-tone by nature, it helps with your light dynamic in the paintings, highlights and shadow read better by comparison. :)

I work pretty much exclusively in oils. So the block in you see here is Oils.
