    OMG!!! I had a 1970 Mazda R100, the first production rotary model, and taking care of it, I made it go OVER 110K miles, before I screwed up an installation of an electric fan, which failed in Houston traffic and burnt it up. Up until then, it was perfectly reliable, proving that they ARE INHERENTLY reliable. I want that radio controlled R100 so bad!!!!

    Arctic Cat also uses a 295cc Sachs Wankel as well as the 303cc. I believe the 295 was a slightly newer variant. My grandfather had a Arctic Cat Lynx with the 295. It had a unique and fantastic sound. I wish that sled was still in the family.

    It's seems the smaller you go with rotaries they become more impressive but when you Go larger they quickly get overtaken by piston engines

    • @mr3748
      @mr3748 3 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      I think it might be because rotaries tend to produce their peak power at relative higher rpm's when compared with diesel and petrol engines. Have you ever heard of a low revving rotary? 😂😂😂😂
      The larger an engine gets, the heavier the moving internals become and the more rotating mass they have, resulting in huge reciprocating forces on bearings and housings. Thats why that big freight ship with the huge diesel engine only revs up to like 500 or 700rpm. Imagine a rotary engine of that size having to rotate at 2 or 3 times that rpm (maybe even more) just to produce usable power😂😂😂😂😂😂

    • @kimpatz2189
      @kimpatz2189 3 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      Wankel design
      A hybrid of a reciprocating piston engine and spinning like a turbine engine that only produce power at high revs. Even starting the wankel is like a turbine . At high revs to seal itself. Its not even recommended to operate it at low revs. This operation is always present in a road vehicle... But not on aircraft where even the Mazda engine has a kit for conversion. Constant rpm at high end is wankels best friend.

    • @wildcoyote34
      @wildcoyote34 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@mr3748 you might want to do some research on big freight ships cause you are way off on how fast they run their engine most big single engine freight ships have a multi cylinder engine usually anywhere from 6-10 or more cylinders ,,and they are anywhere from 50-100,000 shaft horsepower ,direct drive with no transmission and they only turn 75-100 rpm

But still I've only seen massive logging chainsaws used by very skilled operators cut through a log like that!

    That 1st one, the Norton.
    Even if that is measured at the crank, nothing compares to that.
    It's sitting in the middleweight category, right under 600cc's, and pushing about 140hp. That's older literbike numbers, vicious.

    There were also Wankels for small aircraft use - but I can’t recall where their displacement range would land (no pun) for this discussion.
