Brought back memories from back in the day of using small gasoline "ponies" to start the diesels on the old Caterpillar dozers. Thanks for the video...
Beautiful hot bulb engine.... uncommon nowadays. It consists of bulb like projection on the end of side of cylinder. In some heavy duty engine bolt and pin is provided.
I've actually seen a hot bulb machine quite a lot bigger than this hand started in the ballarat showgrounds, victoria, australia. the exhaust pipe was a foot across. had like a decompression valve on the side of the neck of the bulb or somewhere there (was actually like a large threaded bolt with a handle they'd turn 3 revolutions to close it). they had the vaporized diesel coming out of it and hitting the blowtorch there for a few spins and the flames were ripping around and then off she chugged. power on a massive scale. apparently some farmer bought it in 1971 for $100 (scrap prices) and used it to pump water for 7 years or so then they got it from him.
***** I was going to, but felt it was a bit rude to film the guys. but I got the exhaust chugging away outside. I have a whole heap of very short videos with hot bulb engines and even 2 steam tractors. I tried to hook them all together to make like an 8 minute video with windows movie maker. and it all come out crap unfortunately. in the middle of the year when i get tax money back I'm likely to get a decent computer and maybe some decent video editing software so I might try then.
I don't think it would be rude to film them starting an engine if they have it on show they'd probably expect that might happen. Hopefully you'll get your clips all joined up and uploaded soon. Looking forward to seeing them. Regards.
very nice. have you ever tried to bump start this engine. the make up is similar to a blackstone. it should be alot easyier than using a starter motor. any who very nice display.
Hello, is it OK to feature your clip in a my TH-cam channel for educational purposes (so-called temporary copyright.)? Your name will be listed in my compilation on video. Thanks)
The exhaust valve is held open by the governor when the engine is on-speed. When the speed drops, the governor allows the exhaust valve to close so compression will occur and the engine will fire, bringing itself back up to speed. This was in use before sperk ignition came about, and continued to be employed with spark ignited engines as well. The ignition system would not be disabled when the engine was on-speed- only the exhaust valve would be held open. The spark plug or make-and-break points would continue to fire, but with no compression or any appreciable intake suction, no ignition would occur until the speed dropped and the exhaust valve closed.
Ha ha, takes a bit of time to get it going but when it goes it runs nicely all day. Beautiful engine. I re-subscribed to you tonight, just noticed I was un-subscribed. My computer F...... up, hard drive went doolally so i have a lot of videos to catch up on.
Pity we couldn't just make a bigger version of the good engine we use to start the old shit heap engine boss! ..........That's not how we do things here!

Thanks for that story. Pity you haven't got a video of it, sounds like an interesting encounter. Regards from the Emerald Isle.

Link Knight we have old deutz fhar truck engine on a pump - 100hp and runs on 10% WMO it is late 70s i think

We used to own this wonderful engine!!! sorry to have sold it!!!
Very nice engine indeed Antonio 123545
Thanks for sharing. Now why is that guy sneezing and spitting?
It is a semi diesel like model airplane nitro/methanol engines.
Horses were much stronger back then!
I just love how they use a smaller engine to start the big one!
It saves a lot of sweat. Thank's for watching.

No problem.
No air start?
Notice the lubricator on the Canshafy.
A hit and miss hot bulb engine? Never seen one of those before.
I really thought it was a hit-n-miss engine.
Hit and miss is a governing system
The exhaust valve is held open by the governor when the engine is on-speed. When the speed drops, the governor allows the exhaust valve to close so compression will occur and the engine will fire, bringing itself back up to speed. This was in use before sperk ignition came about, and continued to be employed with spark ignited engines as well. That's the way some engines work but definitely not this one, you may study it a bit better. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Nice video regaskin !!
It's not my engine unfortunately but if it would work it would be handier alright.
very compact! 1909 riding lawn mowers must had been small and agile =D
It is a nice running A 1 alright but i'd prefer the Victoria anytime.

I've got one of those too!!!........the Petter A that is.........
Nothing wrong with a good Petter A, maybe Santa will bring you a nice Victoria if you're good. Thanks for watching and commenting.
*****
That would be cool......but getting it down the chimney could be an issue!!......
bossco09 Haa, bossco you're a hoot !!
I like the A1 lol
Your not the first to say to me, they were subscribed and then when they looked again they weren't, something strange going on in YT land me thinks...
Brilliant! but for heavens sake, don't let her run out of fuel, we don't want to have to go through that performance again...ha ha :-)
haha takes a small gas engine to start it
