Me and my 20 handicap can use any and all help it can get! I went to a set of Wilson Launch Pad irons, from an old set of Pro Staff OS. The confidence I've gained is huge, with being able to hear the sweet spot on contact. If a 9W does the same kind of thing, then I'm in.
I’ve been using a 9-7-5 combo for 40 years. Never could control a 5-4-3 irons. Used to carry the 5 iron 185 and the 9 wood 190, 7 W at 205 and 5W 225. Those were the days. Plus the woods always had a softer landing compared to the irons.
In my young days I had a 7 wood (made from actual wood). It was my favorite club in the bag back then. When I switched to metal woods I replaced it with a 5 wood. But I think that was a mistake that I have never rectified. Never had the pleasure of swinging a 9 wood, but you make it look fun.
Is it really worth the extra £160 more for an equivalent iron?? Makes for a very expensive set of clubs😳 Driver, 3, 5, 7 and 9w about £1800 before you have any metal
I have a 4 wood at 16.5 and am considering a 7 wood at 21 degree to replace my 3 hybrid. I am 60 and swing at 85 and hope the 7 wood carries 150. My four wood is the easieyclub I have ever hit, the 7 wood in early tests is just as easy.
I was praising my 9 wood yesterday to my playing partners. After I nailed a 180 shot, pin high, into the green over a pond, they were believers! This thing is awesome. It stops on a dime and carries long enough for good approach shots. I’m playing a different brand, but works great! Gapping is tricky, like you said. I go 9w to 4H for longer approaches to 4W for the longest shots. Shorter than the 9W, I’m using a 6H that slots in nicely for 155 to 175 shots.
I have both 7 and 9 wood in the bag and find the gapping works well. I can grip down on the 9 wood and play it at 175 yards or regular grip to 190. So all in all it works great and took my 5 iron out of my bag.
I am 53 14 handicap and I've got the Ping G425 9 wood max and removed my 5 iron its so much more forgiving and gives me so much confidence using it out the rough
You have 4 years on me and I did the exact same thing. I wish I would of done it 10 years earlier then that. But I at least beat you by 4 on this scorecard lol.
DJ has been quoted as saying that it carries the same as his 3-iron and that his 3-iron doesn't really carry any further than his 4-iron but the 3-iron runs further so he decided to give the 9-wood a try because it stops on greens given the descent angle. He apparently loves it and now swaps it in and out of the bag if the course favors dropping the lower-flighted 3-iron. For gapping, DJ carries a weakly lofted 3-wood at 16.5 degrees and then into a 21-degree 7-wood

There is a short-game Taylormade video a few years back where he speaks about hating shorter wedge distances so he lays up far enough back that he can hit a more full 60 - and I've seen a recent picture of his 52 where he has put some heel and toe grind on it.
I'm 40yrs old and been playing a 7 and 9 wood for almost 20yrs now. I was never good with long irons and found nike ignite 7&9 wood on clearance in 2005. I still have them! these changed my game instantly, and started me on getting better. they're in the garage now, and have epic flash heavenwood in the bag now. I will always have a high lofted wood in my bag, the benefits out way everything else for my game!
I would definitely use this 9 wood. I already know the benefits of a 5 and 7 wood. It would get its share of battering on the courses I play. But yeah, I can ease up on my 7 wood too for distance control. These things stop on greens unlike a 4 iron.
Stopping power depends on clubhead speed and trajectory. I find a 7 wood to stop less than a 4 iron, as I tend to hit a flat trajectory with woods versus high with irons.
Added a 9wood three years ago, dropped the 4 & 5 iron. More carry, more stopping. Pops the ball better than a 7wood. Driving my golf friends wild. Two have bought it. 66 years old, and having much fun!
I have both 7&9 woods in my bag. Long irons are too one dimensional and hard to get elevation. I think people need to stop worrying about others opinion. Try the high loft wood and let stats speak not opinion.

After gaming a 7w, I'm going to put a 9w in the bag. Going to take out the 3w. Rarely have 260 + into a green. Habe 215 to 220 many times more an a perfect 5i can be too demanding
I love my old 2007 Callaway Big Bertha 9 wood . Great for long par 3s. So easy to hit. I can carry mine over 170 yds with superb height and a dodgy shoulder
For a lefty like myself, a 9 wood is a unicorn, at least if I want to find a used one. Seem like everyone is holding on to them! I have a utility 3 19 degrees and it never gives me confidence. This year I bought a 5w and a 7w. They really improved my game, especially the 7w. Just a beautiful ball flight! I have PW-5 iron but the i5 rarely comes out so I've been looking for a 9w, preferably used to save some money. Nice vid👍
After my drivers (yes, I play 2). I play Sim2 Max 7w, & 9w, and Ping G20 5H & 6H (all stiff flex). The addition of the two higher lofted fairway woods have been a massive game changer in my bag over the past 1.5 years. I’ve always struggled launching clubs with less loft than the 21° of my 7W. Gapping is perfect for me with all 4 of those clubs and the two fairways give me about 15-20 yards difference. The only downside is that I am now starting to have to give strokes because my handicap is dropping!
Great video! I was hoping for this one after seeing Dustin Johnson's WITB in June. Dustin Johnson answered the why in a recent interview - the 9 wood is taking the place of his 3 iron. His lofts are interesting. DJ's latest WITB info states his driver is a 12 degrees, his 3 wood is a HL at 16.5 degrees, his 7 wood is at 21 degrees and his 9 wood is at 24 degrees.
My opinion....there's too much ego amongst players that have no business what-so-ever of having an ego. And I'll say this as well...the great majority of golfers have absolutely no business even having a Driver in their bag. For what? So you can waste 5-10 minutes hunting through the woods? If you can't control a club...take it out of your bag and replace it with something you can control.
I have had a Ping G5 nine wood in my bag for many years. I bought it used and the guy told me you'll love it forever! Mine is my 165 yard club! I now carry the Taylor 300 mini, the Stealth 3 plus club and my nine wood!
My heaven wood is my favorite club in the bag. I could care less of the old guy stigma as long as it's not me reaching into my wallet to pay out at the end of the round.
I think this works so well for DJ because the amount of forward shaft lean he applies at impact. I tried it and it just doesn’t get the ball speeds or forgiveness of my cobra tec 4 or 5 hybrids. The 7 sim max is in the bag though and I don’t think it’ll ever leave. I can grip down and hit a 220 carry fade or go full length and hit a 240 carry draw. For some reason it just does miles better than the 9 which was getting like 212 carry max. My 5 hybrid does that with ease. I probably just apply more forward shaft lean with the shorter shaft. So I agree that you find the one that works best and put that in play.
I prefer hybrids for that 185 to 210 distances. I feel much more comfortable with the shorter shaft, and can use the same iron swing. And the versatility is much better.
I found the gapping at the top end of the bag with my slow swing speed was an issue. I have gone high loft 3 wood, 7 wood, 11 wood. About 20 yards gap between the 7 & 11 wood. The 3HL is primarily for the tee, with a perfect lie I might try it off the fairway but it usually turns into a 200 yard putt !
I have been hitting a 9 wood for over 25 years now. My friends always ask what club did you hit. I just smile and tell them to just hit their 9 wood. Oh yeah, they don't carry one. Lol
@@ITS_BOBBY47 12.5 - that's even more than was listed. The wrists are a big factor. Jon Rahm's Rogue TDLS is at 11.2 degree because of the bowed wrist.
I bought Sonartec 5 and 7 woods about 20 years ago. It's interesting to me that the lofts are 20* for the 5 wood and 24* for the 7 wood which are now considered 7 and 9 wood lofts. The 24* club (7 wood? 9 wood?) has never left my bag since I bought it in the early 2000's. It's my safety valve / security blanket when I'm having a terrible day and my game completely falls apart. It goes 180 yards and straight down the middle for me basically every time.
Enjoy your channel. Yes I have purchased a 9 wood. I like fairway woods. I will have to see the carry full and choked and then take some club overlap club out of the bag. Fine by me. I am 73 and simply do not tag irons like I use to do (LOL), however, I do better with hybrid and fairway woods. My favorite club is the 3 wood. We will see . . 😅
Great information…I’m in that zone now where my clubhead speed has slowed a tad over the years and after two hip replacements (I’m 54). I still play players irons because my ball striking is fine…I play a few sets (T150/T200 combo set & MP 221/223 combo set). I carry from 5 iron on…I have a driver, 3 wood and 5 wood at the top end…I need something in the middle and have never hit hybrids well…The hardest thing is most stores that even have 7/9 woods, carry them with either senior flex or ladies shafts in them…so, hard to get a demo to hit…only way is to do a fitting, which I don’t prefer. I know my numbers and my needs, so would prefer they just let me hit it on my own in a hitting bay…still searching for a store to do that in…
What is your carry with a 7 wood vs 9 wood? It seems to me that a 21* 7 wood carry would be 10-12 yards longer than a 24* 9 wood. So, a 5 iron to a 4 iron would be about 10 yards difference. As a 77 year old golfer with a 13 handicap, I would think having both a 7 and 9 wood, would be advantageous.
I love higher lofted woods but taylormade build their fairway woods with to strong of lofts. My cobra 7 adjusts to 24*. The 9 wood is 25.5* up to 27* Callaway 13 wood is 31*.
Just found a 2004 Mizuno MP-001 21degree 7W with an DG S300 shaft at a thrift shop. Best $25 I have spent. I just choke down on it, and it's basically the same distance as a 9W. Nothing better than swinging it easy like a wedge to the middle of the green from 170-180 out. Full swing it goes 200 yards high and straight. Doesn't matter if it's in the rough either. I have always hated hybrids. If you get the right shaft for your swing a 7w or 9w could be a game changer.
i went looking for a 7 wood, loved them, I saw this 9 wood in the used bin and tried it, it was nice off the matt. I went back 2 weeks later saw it still in the bin but marked with a new lower price.... Anyway... It's the bet club in my bag. Replaces my Srixon 4 iron great from 190 - 210 out. Great action off the face. Don't worry about your buddies telling you it's a club ment for girls. Scored my first Eagle at my club.... Love the video....
9 wood is amazing for long par 3s 190 - 200 and second shot par 5's. I haven't kept track but id I had to guess, probably saves me 3 - 4 strokes a round on 18. Especially on the par 3 190+. There are round where I stick it 10 feet away and it just adds a ton of confidence to my game. Not to mention getting a birdie off that hole doesn't hurt either.....
I have just added a 9 wood in my golf bag and am hoping that it would give me the same distance as my 4 hybrid (about 170 yards) but with a higher elevation. I am 62, and a high handicapper
As an owner of a 7 wood (200-215 yards) can see the reason for the 9 wood. I keep a 25 deg 5 Hybrid ( Cobra F Max) in the Bag and it is a wonder club, 190-200 yards from rough always straight, and stops away better than the 7 wood. Being a wood a stepper apex and sharper decent. 9 wood would swap out a 5 iron ( 180-200 yards anyway)
As you said the gapping is an issue. I have a Ping G400 7 wood which is 22 degrees and a Ping G400 9 wood which is 23.5 degrees. I can actually adjust them to have the same loft. I like them both but one has to stay outside the bag. I also have driver, 3 and 5 wood. Irons start at 6 so I swap around a bit with a 4 hybrid that I don’t really like and 4 crossover so the gap between fairway woods and irons is a bit of a problem. By the way there is a stigma for some people about using a 9 wood. I used one on a par 3 and one of the other players “questioned my masculinity” shall we say, for using it but it doesn’t bother me.
I used to joke that I’d play a whole bag full of woods if I could! Top of the bag is always a funny condensing of gapping depending on your clubs and the swing! It’s been tough for me to get it right. I had a Callaway 7W “Heavenwood” (21 deg) when I saw it on for a good deal. I hit it about as far as I would a 3-iron if I had one, but much higher trajectory. Unfortunately that made it susceptible to wind so I have swapped it out for a 3H (20) that I love bc it also plays better out of the rough (where I prefer to be a little closer/more upright over the ball) and it gaps better to my 4W (16.5), which for whatever reason I can hit almost as far as my old 3W (14)! All that said, I’m done tinkering for the time being. I’ve got a good batch of sticks at the top now to be able to swap based on course tendencies.
I tried a 9w but it didn't work for gapping purposes. Carry was 192-195 yards, but I carry my 7w 195-200 yards and my 4h 185-190 yards. Ball flight was a bit too high for me, would be a problem in the wind
If you would've hit a 7 wood off the tee, would that 9 wood got you on the green in two? If not, hit a 5 wood off the tee. Point is, with today's technology in fairway woods and rescue woods, it really minimizes the number of irons I carry.
Still can't get comfy with fw woods or even my hybrid out of rough. I'm still more willing to grab the 4 iron and usually no problems. Almost never hit wood other than the tee. Just not confident hitting that big head and long shaft off the grass. I feel the opposite of the often referred to "confidence inspiring" when I get that combination in my hands. Much prefer knocking my 4 iron 200 down the fwy vs trying to go for a green 220 or 250 out
The stigma is only in the numbering on the club "9". Give this club to any golfer with no clues on the "9", and they would consider it...... fabulous user friendly club.....
If you go back a few decades 24-degree of loft = an old 7-wood (metal ) or if you are really old like me a Ginty 7 laminate wood with a steel 4 wood shaft. What goes around comes around. Great club but I'm using a Cobra Radspeed 22 degree 7 wood turned up to the max.
Have had a 7 wood in bag since the SIM came out . Do not carry a 3 or 5 as 7 goes just as far. Tried getting 9 wood but they only came in A flex, so went with a 4 hybrid G425. Trouble with 9 woods with reg flex onwards wood be a special order over here in Australia
I use a TaylorMade 16.5 3 wood, 20 degree hybrid, 23 degree hybrid and 26 degree hybrid. Highest iron is my 6. For me hybrids play from the rough better. 12 handicap senior woman golfer
Carried a 7 wood in my younger days, ,setup now is driver 3,5 woods 4 hybrid 6 through aw r11 irons 56 vokey 60 Cleveland cg16 ...course I play very often is how I arranged this, but I don't believe a 9 wood will make it into my bag anytime soon
Just bought a Stealth 9 wood. I'll be using it on Friday. A couple of weeks ago I bought a ping 7 wood and love it. So easy to get the ball in the air, and great for getting the ball out the rough. I'm looking forward to giving the 9 wood a go. 👍

Great video Andy.,, I game a 7 wood but never tried a 9 wood, and of course the big difference is the shaft lenths on these fairwoods, gotta be 5 inches longer , not sure but much longer then an Iron! I have a what you might call a steep but sweeping swing so fairway woods really work good for myself! But I love the mixing things up to see what works the best for a club Golfer! Most people are making their lives hard with 5 /4 irons they cant hit, replace them with hybrids or woods. the only caveat is my 5wood flying very high isn't great sometimes when the wind is gusting on a links course.
Andy. I don’t worry about the stigma attached to any club. I play golf to enjoy myself. I’d much rather see a ball fly through the air with a 9 wood than duff an iron. I carry a chipper too for when my wedges are playing up 😳
I don't care if people think its an old mans club or a high HC club I play a 5w instead of a 3w which is sort of that anyway. I would happily play a 7 and 9 wood
I'm 36, not a great golfer but made a huge leap in year 3 - i play 3,5,7,9 woods. In Arizona, I face dryer courses more than I face high winds. It just drops on the green so nicely. At that loft as well, I can do a lot more fun cut shots instead of even having to pull out a mid iron.
I've used an Adams 9 wood since the late 90s early 2000s and have always loved it. Since I've gotten older I don't hit my clubs as far as I once did and my 9 wood Travels 130 yards now but it's a consistent 130 as to where my 7 iron went from 150 to 125 and it's not as consistent as the 9 wood. I don't believe that I'll be taking it out of my bag any time soon.
What 11 wood do you have? I can't find any modern day 11 wood. I have my speedzone womens head at 25.5 degree std loft but I put a x stiff shaft in it.
7 & 9 woods are so easy to hit out of bunkers, for example you hit a fairway bunker from the tee on a par 5, can escalate the ball down there 170-200 rather than punching out with a wedge
I and middle aged and use a 9 wood and as a mid handicap it give much more confidence with long par-3 and my 4-5 iron distance fairway shots. Love the club....

I use Ping G425 5 hybrid which is more versatile for me since I often play in high wind. Main conclusion for me is that I am glad to have retired my 5 iron!
There are several factors that determine how far a club will hit a golf ball. One of those factors that many of us forget is the weight of the club. A heavier head will hit the ball farther. Which is why your 7 or 9 wood can hit the ball farther than an iron with equivalent loft.

Got fitted some months back and was recommended a 23 Degree wood. It's my favourite wood, gives me good height and i hit it fairly straight. Because it's a shorter club, i tend to hit it a lot better and sometimes longer than expected.

My 9 wood replaces my 4 iron and carries 225, 230. The 9 wood flys higher and lands softer, it works fantastic for me. I got the paradym 9 wood
Haven't tried the 9 yet, I like my hybrid and utility irons still but I have added a Stealth 7 wood for certain courses and really like it!

Got one! Works great for 5 iron replacement. I hit it higher longer and stops on the green with no problem. I'm 65 years young and 6.9 handicap😊.

Great video! I was hoping for this one after seeing Dustin Johnson's WITB in June. Dustin Johnson answered the why in a recent interview - the 9 wood is taking the place of his 3 iron. His lofts are interesting. DJ's latest WITB info states his driver is a 12 degrees, his 3 wood is a HL at 16.5 degrees, his 7 wood is at 21 degrees and his 9 wood is at 24 degrees.
My opinion....there's too much ego amongst players that have no business what-so-ever of having an ego. And I'll say this as well...the great majority of golfers have absolutely no business even having a Driver in their bag. For what? So you can waste 5-10 minutes hunting through the woods? If you can't control a club...take it out of your bag and replace it with something you can control.
My 9-wood is my go to club…if I can’t get there with my 11-wood.
I’m about playing what works…rebuilding the golf setup atm, seriously considering 7W and 9W as options.
I have had a Ping G5 nine wood in my bag for many years. I bought it used and the guy told me you'll love it forever! Mine is my 165 yard club! I now carry the Taylor 300 mini, the Stealth 3 plus club and my nine wood!
My heaven wood is my favorite club in the bag. I could care less of the old guy stigma as long as it's not me reaching into my wallet to pay out at the end of the round.
I think this works so well for DJ because the amount of forward shaft lean he applies at impact. I tried it and it just doesn’t get the ball speeds or forgiveness of my cobra tec 4 or 5 hybrids. The 7 sim max is in the bag though and I don’t think it’ll ever leave. I can grip down and hit a 220 carry fade or go full length and hit a 240 carry draw. For some reason it just does miles better than the 9 which was getting like 212 carry max. My 5 hybrid does that with ease. I probably just apply more forward shaft lean with the shorter shaft. So I agree that you find the one that works best and put that in play.
I have been playing a ping g410 9 wood set to 22.5 degrees. And I’m a 5 handicap. I was hoping others would figure out how well they work.
I prefer hybrids for that 185 to 210 distances. I feel much more comfortable with the shorter shaft, and can use the same iron swing. And the versatility is much better.
I found the gapping at the top end of the bag with my slow swing speed was an issue. I have gone high loft 3 wood, 7 wood, 11 wood. About 20 yards gap between the 7 & 11 wood. The 3HL is primarily for the tee, with a perfect lie I might try it off the fairway but it usually turns into a 200 yard putt !
Interesting, might be worth putting the 9 wood up against the Stealth 4 hybrid for comparison.
I have been hitting a 9 wood for over 25 years now. My friends always ask what club did you hit. I just smile and tell them to just hit their 9 wood. Oh yeah, they don't carry one. Lol
Used the Divine 9. It was great, and the Tight Lies 7 wood 24 degree, and it was super.
I have 7,9,11 woods. My longest iron is 8. I also have a hybrid.
It’s not supposed to replace a 5 iron comparing the loft is not relevant it’s the length of the shaft size of head and loft combined.
Since DJ bows his left wrist, at impact he delofts the club. Therefore, the 9W plays more like a 7W and also why he plays a 10.5* Driver.
DJ's new WITB states his driver is at 12 degrees...

@@ITS_BOBBY47 12.5 - that's even more than was listed. The wrists are a big factor. Jon Rahm's Rogue TDLS is at 11.2 degree because of the bowed wrist.
Got the TaylorMade M6 9 wood and love it . When my hybrids wanna creep left I use it. Dead straight 90 percent of the time
I bought Sonartec 5 and 7 woods about 20 years ago. It's interesting to me that the lofts are 20* for the 5 wood and 24* for the 7 wood which are now considered 7 and 9 wood lofts. The 24* club (7 wood? 9 wood?) has never left my bag since I bought it in the early 2000's. It's my safety valve / security blanket when I'm having a terrible day and my game completely falls apart. It goes 180 yards and straight down the middle for me basically every time.
I would play a 12 and a half wood if it works

Enjoy your channel. Yes I have purchased a 9 wood. I like fairway woods. I will have to see the carry full and choked and then take some club overlap club out of the bag. Fine by me. I am 73 and simply do not tag irons like I use to do (LOL), however, I do better with hybrid and fairway woods. My favorite club is the 3 wood. We will see . . 😅
Great information…I’m in that zone now where my clubhead speed has slowed a tad over the years and after two hip replacements (I’m 54). I still play players irons because my ball striking is fine…I play a few sets (T150/T200 combo set & MP 221/223 combo set). I carry from 5 iron on…I have a driver, 3 wood and 5 wood at the top end…I need something in the middle and have never hit hybrids well…The hardest thing is most stores that even have 7/9 woods, carry them with either senior flex or ladies shafts in them…so, hard to get a demo to hit…only way is to do a fitting, which I don’t prefer. I know my numbers and my needs, so would prefer they just let me hit it on my own in a hitting bay…still searching for a store to do that in…
What is your carry with a 7 wood vs 9 wood? It seems to me that a 21* 7 wood carry would be 10-12 yards longer than a 24* 9 wood. So, a 5 iron to a 4 iron would be about 10 yards difference. As a 77 year old golfer with a 13 handicap, I would think having both a 7 and 9 wood, would be advantageous.
I love higher lofted woods but taylormade build their fairway woods with to strong of lofts.
My cobra 7 adjusts to 24*.
The 9 wood is 25.5* up to 27*
Callaway 13 wood is 31*.
Just found a 2004 Mizuno MP-001 21degree 7W with an DG S300 shaft at a thrift shop. Best $25 I have spent. I just choke down on it, and it's basically the same distance as a 9W. Nothing better than swinging it easy like a wedge to the middle of the green from 170-180 out. Full swing it goes 200 yards high and straight. Doesn't matter if it's in the rough either. I have always hated hybrids. If you get the right shaft for your swing a 7w or 9w could be a game changer.
i went looking for a 7 wood, loved them, I saw this 9 wood in the used bin and tried it, it was nice off the matt. I went back 2 weeks later saw it still in the bin but marked with a new lower price.... Anyway... It's the bet club in my bag. Replaces my Srixon 4 iron great from 190 - 210 out. Great action off the face. Don't worry about your buddies telling you it's a club ment for girls. Scored my first Eagle at my club....

9 wood is amazing for long par 3s 190 - 200 and second shot par 5's. I haven't kept track but id I had to guess, probably saves me 3 - 4 strokes a round on 18. Especially on the par 3 190+. There are round where I stick it 10 feet away and it just adds a ton of confidence to my game. Not to mention getting a birdie off that hole doesn't hurt either.....
I have just added a 9 wood in my golf bag and am hoping that it would give me the same distance as my 4 hybrid (about 170 yards) but with a higher elevation. I am 62, and a high handicapper
As an owner of a 7 wood (200-215 yards) can see the reason for the 9 wood. I keep a 25 deg 5 Hybrid ( Cobra F Max) in the Bag and it is a wonder club, 190-200 yards from rough always straight, and stops away better than the 7 wood. Being a wood a stepper apex and sharper decent.
9 wood would swap out a 5 iron ( 180-200 yards anyway)
As you said the gapping is an issue. I have a Ping G400 7 wood which is 22 degrees and a Ping G400 9 wood which is 23.5 degrees. I can actually adjust them to have the same loft. I like them both but one has to stay outside the bag. I also have driver, 3 and 5 wood. Irons start at 6 so I swap around a bit with a 4 hybrid that I don’t really like and 4 crossover so the gap between fairway woods and irons is a bit of a problem. By the way there is a stigma for some people about using a 9 wood. I used one on a par 3 and one of the other players “questioned my masculinity” shall we say, for using it but it doesn’t bother me.
I used to joke that I’d play a whole bag full of woods if I could!
Top of the bag is always a funny condensing of gapping depending on your clubs and the swing! It’s been tough for me to get it right. I had a Callaway 7W “Heavenwood” (21 deg) when I saw it on for a good deal. I hit it about as far as I would a 3-iron if I had one, but much higher trajectory. Unfortunately that made it susceptible to wind so I have swapped it out for a 3H (20) that I love bc it also plays better out of the rough (where I prefer to be a little closer/more upright over the ball) and it gaps better to my 4W (16.5), which for whatever reason I can hit almost as far as my old 3W (14)! All that said, I’m done tinkering for the time being. I’ve got a good batch of sticks at the top now to be able to swap based on course tendencies.
I tried a 9w but it didn't work for gapping purposes. Carry was 192-195 yards, but I carry my 7w 195-200 yards and my 4h 185-190 yards. Ball flight was a bit too high for me, would be a problem in the wind
If you would've hit a 7 wood off the tee, would that 9 wood got you on the green in two? If not, hit a 5 wood off the tee. Point is, with today's technology in fairway woods and rescue woods, it really minimizes the number of irons I carry.
Still can't get comfy with fw woods or even my hybrid out of rough. I'm still more willing to grab the 4 iron and usually no problems. Almost never hit wood other than the tee. Just not confident hitting that big head and long shaft off the grass. I feel the opposite of the often referred to "confidence inspiring" when I get that combination in my hands. Much prefer knocking my 4 iron 200 down the fwy vs trying to go for a green 220 or 250 out
The stigma is only in the numbering on the club "9". Give this club to any golfer with no clues on the "9", and they would consider it...... fabulous user friendly club.....
If you go back a few decades 24-degree of loft = an old 7-wood (metal ) or if you are really old like me a Ginty 7 laminate wood with a steel 4 wood shaft. What goes around comes around. Great club but I'm using a Cobra Radspeed 22 degree 7 wood turned up to the max.
Have had a 7 wood in bag since the SIM came out . Do not carry a 3 or 5 as 7 goes just as far. Tried getting 9 wood but they only came in A flex, so went with a 4 hybrid G425. Trouble with 9 woods with reg flex onwards wood be a special order over here in Australia
I use a TaylorMade 16.5 3 wood, 20 degree hybrid, 23 degree hybrid and 26 degree hybrid. Highest iron is my 6. For me hybrids play from the rough better. 12 handicap senior woman golfer
Carried a 7 wood in my younger days, ,setup now is driver 3,5 woods 4 hybrid 6 through aw r11 irons 56 vokey 60 Cleveland cg16 ...course I play very often is how I arranged this, but I don't believe a 9 wood will make it into my bag anytime soon
Just bought a Stealth 9 wood. I'll be using it on Friday. A couple of weeks ago I bought a ping 7 wood and love it. So easy to get the ball in the air, and great for getting the ball out the rough. I'm looking forward to giving the 9 wood a go. 👍

Great video Andy.,, I game a 7 wood but never tried a 9 wood, and of course the big difference is the shaft lenths on these fairwoods, gotta be 5 inches longer , not sure but much longer then an Iron! I have a what you might call a steep but sweeping swing so fairway woods really work good for myself! But I love the mixing things up to see what works the best for a club Golfer! Most people are making their lives hard with 5 /4 irons they cant hit, replace them with hybrids or woods. the only caveat is my 5wood flying very high isn't great sometimes when the wind is gusting on a links course.
Andy. I don’t worry about the stigma attached to any club. I play golf to enjoy myself. I’d much rather see a ball fly through the air with a 9 wood than duff an iron. I carry a chipper too for when my wedges are playing up 😳
I don't care if people think its an old mans club or a high HC club I play a 5w instead of a 3w which is sort of that anyway. I would happily play a 7 and 9 wood
I'm 36, not a great golfer but made a huge leap in year 3 - i play 3,5,7,9 woods. In Arizona, I face dryer courses more than I face high winds. It just drops on the green so nicely. At that loft as well, I can do a lot more fun cut shots instead of even having to pull out a mid iron.
I've used an Adams 9 wood since the late 90s early 2000s and have always loved it. Since I've gotten older I don't hit my clubs as far as I once did and my 9 wood Travels 130 yards now but it's a consistent 130 as to where my 7 iron went from 150 to 125 and it's not as consistent as the 9 wood. I don't believe that I'll be taking it out of my bag any time soon.
I have a 9 wood and a 11 wood. I find them easier to hit than the longer hybrids and irons. Longest iron in my bag is the 8 iron.

I have my speedzone womens head at 25.5 degree std loft but I put a x stiff shaft in it.

7 & 9 woods are so easy to hit out of bunkers, for example you hit a fairway bunker from the tee on a par 5, can escalate the ball down there 170-200 rather than punching out with a wedge

I and middle aged and use a 9 wood and as a mid handicap it give much more confidence with long par-3 and my 4-5 iron distance fairway shots. Love the club....

I use Ping G425 5 hybrid which is more versatile for me since I often play in high wind. Main conclusion for me is that I am glad to have retired my 5 iron!
Plenty of them are carrying 7 woods now Have been for a very long time. They just get better launch and use angle of decent to stop the ball.
Love your videos, though you are far from an avg golfer. On a different note, how is the tracer of the ball flight done in your videos?
There are several factors that determine how far a club will hit a golf ball. One of those factors that many of us forget is the weight of the club. A heavier head will hit the ball farther. Which is why your 7 or 9 wood can hit the ball farther than an iron with equivalent loft.
Great video Andy. I've had a 9 wood in the bag for years. I've got the la jolla knife 9 wood it's great out of the rough fairway bunkers. Goes about 165 for me.
I love my 7,9 and 11 woods. I would not get rid of those woods except maybe for newer but same loft

Got fitted some months back and was recommended a 23 Degree wood. It's my favourite wood, gives me good height and i hit it fairly straight. Because it's a shorter club, i tend to hit it a lot better and sometimes longer than expected.
Had one years ago before hybrids were a thing. Was a bit of a magic stick, just not on windy days.
Vijay Singh used one all those years ago and was his favourite club I have used one for the past 15yrs and it is so versatile.
