it's so hard to choose between that and "Down ze... SHIIIIIIISTIIIIIIMMM!". The Japenglish in that on really sells it.
I switched Strive to English VA just for Goldlewis. His voicelines are godlike. I wish ArcSys added a separate language toggle for each character already. (yes I know you can mod the voices. Not an excuse for not having the feature)

80% of the reason I wanna do Heavenly Potemkin Buster is because of the way the Japanese VA delivers the line. It's *so* good. The dopamine hit is amazing. Also, a big part of why I used to play Dudley in 3rd Strike was the way he opened the round with "Let's fight like gentlemen." When SF4 changed the VA and voice line, I quit playing Dudley. It meant that much to me.

When I first found out how fucked up Marvel 3 is, I nearly pissed myself laughing.
ToDs for every character + disgusting mixups on incomings make for a very entertaining watching experience.

I was in the crowd at EVO 2018 when the whole arena screamed along with Cell during the intro to Grand Finals and let me tell you as hype as those finals were it wouldn't have been half as awesome without that to start it off.

My all-time favorite example is something really subtle, but it is so damn cool: Dudley's sfx for his stand jab in 3S. It ties in the classy boxer theme perfectly.
That is an example that shows fine taste, i can hear that jab so vividly. Sf3s sfx are pretty good.

The reason I play Hyde in Uni is because hearing him count the hits of his rekka are so satisfying to me. "firsto, secondo, thirdo!"

One of the biggest reasons I love Ragna in BlazBlue is because both his English and Japanese VAs are going off so hard. I'll never forget CARNAGE-I'LL DEVOUR YA, GAUNTLET HADES, HELL'S, HELL'S, FANG! BELIAL EDGE for the rest of my life. That game does a lot to get you interested in the world, but it all starts with a good battle line.
I miss the English VA and all of the swearing
I also like how his dialogue changes depending on who he's fighting. Hearing him cuss out Jin is always fun.

Patrick Seitz and Sugita are such great voice actors. If you need anyone to say the dumbest things with conviction you get those two.

I can all but guarantee that was the result of a tight budget. Viacom probably thought they could get away with "just" a platform fighter starring their characters without letting the devs put any heart into it. It took both fan outcry and the hype over Multiversus for them to see the error of that decision.

Even if the lore isn't important to you, its existence goes a long way to making their characters feel like they belong in the same universe and communicating the similarities/differences between them, and voice lines are definitely part of that. I think it's part of why Street Fighter's characters are so enduring.
for real. without Lore, nothing would actually happen. Ryu wouldn't even have his own fighting style nor reason to fight if it weren't for lore

I've always felt like fighting game lore should be limited to stuff that you can display easily in a match with no context. When characters reference some complicated backstory when they face each other it just makes me think "oh there was some lore bullshit I had to read in order to understand that" but when they just talk shit or whatever that works for me. Like when Chipp talks about being a ninja.
@@Kanelel I think that's too limited, many like myself were disappointed that Strive has fewer unique character win/loss interactions than past games, because these characters know one another much better than "guy I need to beat up." It makes sense for Chipp to tell Gio to be a ninja, but loreheads know he could have much more interesting things to say to folks like Ky and Potemkin
Captain America’s MVC voice lines will live rent free in my head until I’m dead.
One voice line that I really like from Strive is Axl Bomber. It just sounds and feels so good to get bomber loops hearing Axal say "AXL Bomber" 3 or 4 times in a row.
I've always thought about how good fight game sound design is in regards to voice acting. Like people play these games for 1000+ hours but instead of getting sick of any voice lines, they become iconic. Gill's voice lines are the major reason I actually wanted to play him in SFV.

The voices in umvc3 are so iconic and I love the energy that cast has, examples being Nova who has such a heroic voice and dante with his classic GET BACK!
Ky's "Vaypor Thrusto!" Will always hit home for me, especially that KO version. Also evey version of Dragon Install ever said.
I always really liked that Dire Elclair's pronunciation changes based on whether it hit or got blocked.

For me Sol's appeal has always been enhanced by his JP voice actors. Even in Strive where some of the animations just don't hit right for me (Sol's f.S face always cracks me up) the VA carries the energy and brings the character to life. Lore is just a bonus for us nerds to argue over

Marvel 3 is really the goat for this, every character has memorable voice lines. in the once in a millennium storm pops up in this game you still know what all her super lines are

A good voice line can make a super last more than what the frame data says it does. It can make it eternal.

Its always good to have lore with your fighting game I think, every time (except special cases like MK) it has only enhanced the characters and your love for them imo
Like, Ragna yelling SAYAAAA! at the top of his lungs when he hits OD against Izanami wouldn't go so hard if you didn't know the story between them
I fell in love with Ragna when I first heard him scream "JIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIN!!!!!" in his OD activation, even knowing just the basics of lore that went so hard
And we shouldn't forget the legendary Eng Dub Ragna from BBCP. I feel like BlazBlue has the best English dub out there
Sol and Urien are at the top of my list. Hearing "CRUSH CRUSH EYEAH" every time you TTH is music to the ears, same with revolver combos in strive.
A voice line that became surprisingly iconic was with Diddy Kong's down throw -> up air combo. At Apex 2015, you could hear people yelling "hoo, haw" in time with the combo, and became the name of that combo within the community. In addition, it got so iconic that other combos got named with a similar pattern, such as R.O.B's down throw -> up air (called the Beep Boop) and Donkey Kong's cargo up throw -> up air (called the Ding Dong).
One of the reasons Baiken is one of my favorite characters beyond just being a rad fucking samurai woman with one arm and an eye patch is the way her VA shouts out her attacks, and *especially* the way she growls TATAMI GAESHI every time. Sends fucking shivers down my spine man.

If I didn't find this comment I would have made it myself. her delivery is some of the rawest stuff in fighting games i can remember, and I vividly remember thinking "if in strive she doesnt sound like a bloody demon roaring like in xrd im going to riot" (and i'm so glad she does)
Its ao crazy how a VOs performance can determine so much about a characters feel that honestly Baiken would feel so different if ahe wasnt growling her lines out in anger.
I play ARAM in League of Legends and one of the shopkeepers on the map shouts "for freedom!" when you respawn. Every single time without fail my brain autocompletes it with "STARS AND STRIPES!"

See, I agree on Rufus being wack, but I also just adore his character being so god damn stupid tbh. It ties into what youre saying about good voice lines too, since the reason I love him is "AMERICA SHEDS A TEAR"
Jedah's intro with the eerie choir behind him as he says "Do not fear - for I am the beginning, and the end" is something that is always so cool when I see it that I always get disappointed when he does his much quicker intro in VSav.
But yeah, that, Gill's intro in 3S, and anything Geese or Terry have ever said are definitely some of the best voice lines I can think of in fighting games.
One of my favorite voicelines is from MVCI. The force behind Sigma's voice when you go for super and he shouts "Mourn for your obsolete race!" gets me every time.

Good VO adds so much soul to a game it's so underappreciated. It's what makes me love even annoying top tier decks in LoR since I can't find myself not saying such smooth voicelines.
One of my favourite lines is Anji's grab, where he goes "Choro-choro shiten ja ne!" and I was so hype to see it come back in Strive
I already knew voicelines were powerful but goddamn... See you later gave that man a buff and a half. Hyped as fuck and scared as shit. I could never be a competitor, could you imagine going to EVO, being in the grand finals and hearing POTEMKIN BUSTAAAAAH as someone takes away your dream of actually winning Evo?

I love me some "HYAA" with Cooler's 236S. That one will always have a place in my heart.
All of Cooler’s voice lines are etched into my brain. Man brings so much rawness to each one of his lines.
Nothing will top the level of Dopamine I'd recieve in Xrd whenever I popped Sol's Install and Joji Nakata screams his lungs out: "DRAGOOOOON INSTAAAAAL!!". The cherry on top is Ride The Fire starts playing and all I can hear from the vocalist is "RAAAAADIOOOOOOOOOOO!!". Absolutely cathartic moment.
It's also useful for my memory because when Geese does rage art and says "NOW DIE!" in Tekken 7 it reminds me to "NOW DUCK!"
The cell scream at Evo is a perfect example of how voice lines can bring hype to a game.
Tekken 7 Devil Jin "Da!" Kazuya "Dorya!" Heihachi "Hoyah!" Followed by the electric sfx is so memorable to me as well as Bryan's laugh and Jack's "ONE!"
Electric sfx has to be the main reason why ANY Mishima main instinctively tries to combo EWGF into EWGF
This is probably the Sajam video that relates to me the most... Fighting Game voice line delivery is such an art.
Despite being played by about 3 people globally, Modok's voice lines are insanely quotable. I think he stands among the characters with the strongest voice lines in the entire game, there's so much personality to him.
Also, G is one of the best examples of how not taking yourself too seriously opens up a whole new world of charisma, they took a risk on him and ended up with an instant classic.
I can so clearly hear Baiken laugh taunt and her roaring "TATAMI GAESHI!!!!"
Marvel 3 has the best voice direction in the genre and Marvel Infinite has some of the worst, with many of the same VAs playing the same characters in both. You want a case study for how good voice lines can help make gameplay more legible in real time or muddy up the soundscape until it's harder to parse, that's the ideal one.
"I've got ALL I NEED!"
This is unironically THE most important part of a good fighting game to me. I love marvel so much because of it. Anything without that just doesn't do it for me
MK does have ONE line I can think of that has this effect. At least for me. In MKX, Cassie Cage's Hollywood variation has the Nut Cracker, and when she uses it, she yells "Ding!" when she punches. Even better and more satisfying, when you enhance it, she punches twice and now yells "Ding! Dong!"

I think it's weird hearing people saying they don't give a f**k about the lore when these one liners are a big part of the characters personality and this is directly tied to it's lore.

Yep Marvel 3 is probably the mouthiest fighting game ever made. I learned and mained MvC3 Chris solely because of said mouthiness, and I never played a resident evil before. His lines just made him so fun.
I'll never forget about this one combo video i found for Chris back then, where the highest rated comment was just every line he said for a basic 3 bar combo, and no joke, it was like a full paragraph long. Seriously his 214+A chain alone was "ONE, TWO BODY ATTACK HERE'S ANOTHER TAKE THIS YOU'RE FINISHED." Zero pauses.
NRS/WB have a ton of voice lines, they are just doing it randomly after certain moves or in-between rounds, unlike other games that do it on regular-basis for every single special. The only ones that are like that are indeed the Scorpion's Spear lines, Raiden's Superman line and Shao Kahn's Taunts, but the voice lines are there.
I find myself saying mvc voice lines all the time, the original one, its just so good from the "come on mon amie" to the "lets go bub" and the "web swing", its so tight

In Blazblue my favorite thing from my main Susanoo is when you use his super and he says "Mo I" on the first hit makes it feel so good. I even say it everytime I use it because ei love it so much. I also love Ragna for his "gauntlet hades" and "carnage, ill devour you!"
Everytime I mash on defense in Skullgirls umbrella yells “let me play!” And its my favorite
Roy's star KO throughout Smash has always been iconic because of how utterly terrified he sounds, even the english dub in Ultimate makes it sound like he's on a one way trip to Brazil or something
Star KOs have so much character to them in Ultimate. I love Pit’s “I NEVER LEARNED HOW TO READ!”.

Remember Skullgirls' april fools update? Where they replaced every single one of Annie's voice lines with her saying "ROLLIN' "
Marvel is like the perfect example for this. I could probably quote 80% of the dialogue in the game without hesitation. Some notable ones I miss though are wesker saying "damnit" when he's getting hit, and super skrull's "he loves me INFERNOOOOOO" whatever the fuck that means. Soul soul soul soul. Even a lot of the win quotes/start of match stuff is quotable as hell. I play a lot of phoenix wright and every single line of his, is perfect.
CvS2 has some of my favorite line delivery in all of fighting games. The cadence, the reverb. There's just so much more BITE in CvS character's voice lines.

Hitting Susanoo's 632146D while in Overdrive is peak Blazblue Central Fiction with that final scream before the laser.

Skullgirls is an interesting example of cool voice lines to me because the game originally only had an English dub for years until second encore added a Japanese dub. They must have grown attached to some of the original lines because there's tons of references to them in the jp dub.
Also jp robo saying "beam" is really adorable and i will never switch her off jp because of it.
Can't forget the classic BIONIC ARRRRRRRM from Combofiend vs Marn at Final Round.
Honestly, roughly half the reason I main Degray in Fantasy Strike is his voice work. He just hams up every single line in a way that makes every big hit feel incredible. Also he shouts "Objection!" when you tech a throw and that is just the best feeling ever.
Every Shadow Naoto line makes me go feral, especially the laugh on her 236236AB
Another great one: Whenever anyone played Makoto in tournament in SF4 and landed Ultra 1 the entire crowd would chant along with "Seichuusen Godanzuki!" And how could you not?
landing a Vira 5U and hearing "LUMINIERA, MERGE" feels really really good making your opponent simultaneously feel bad about getting grabbed while shitting their pants in stress
I think "Nani ga deru ka na" voice line was one of the reason I fell in love with Faust
As someone who never really ever had any interest in fighting games, Strive absolutely just grabbed me in its presentation, audio obviously included
Favorites - Zangief yells I'm SFV, Nagoriyuki's blood super yell
Bad ones - Spiderman saying "you like that?" a dozen times per combo, Zelda's waifu yells in smash ultimate
This is one of the big reasons I love Cody so much, especially in SFV, so many good-ass lines add so much personally to the character

JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Heritage for the Future was my first actual fighting game that I wanted to get invested in. Hol Horse is a character that I still love to this day, and hearing him say "J. Geil mon dana...~" after landing his super or "Jaana! Aishteruze...~" in his intro always makes me smile.

I remember back in injustice 2 where of someone picked aquaman and did his trident rush, the crowd would yell with him. I always wondered why since aquaman was universally hated in that game
Not exactly the same but I loved the dialogue during some of the story battles in sf4. And thought is was really sick when the character had specific dialogue if you finished it with a ultra super. I miss character intros so much man. That's where lore shined the most.
