Precious traditions of sung prayer-- gone. A reverent, humble spirit that sang and sailed on sacred music and rose to Heaven from ancient cathedrals... gone. How quickly our civilization has deteriorated. Many of these old works of brick and mortar and faith are now closed and crumbling. Some are even given over to the secular or even profane; painfully sad. Thank you for sharing with us this glimpse into a time and practice that seems another age altogether, though not so long ago, even still in our memory. 👑✝️🕊️🙏🎶
So well said. The destruction of this tradition gnaws at me every day, and I'm half a world away. The standards maintained at a provincial Anglican cathedral even as of 1969, just astounding. Thanks to this site, at least there's a time capsule containing what's been lost, if anyone in the future cares to crack it open and run with it.
I think the assistant organist in 1969 was Alan Dance. The book "music at Ripon Cathedral" by Beer and Crawshaw has Marcus starting in 1974, and lists Alan Dance as in this broadcast.
several sources on Google say the same, Dance, Alan. Assistant organist of Ripon Cathedral, 1963-74, MH Assistant Organist of Ripon Cathedral 1974 - 1986
