    There is actually an extended cut that reveals a little more, including the fact that Babydoll isn't the main character

    • @mounne13
      @mounne13 3 ปีที่แล้ว +66

      If Babydoll isn't the main character, then why is she on the front of the poster. Why is she the centre of attention for every form of media possible while the escapee doesn't get even the SLIGHTEST of notice?
      "To help the person escape"
      That would work if the movie was real life. This is a work of fiction. You can show the audience the main character or at least hint to it instead of pulling a Shamaylan and then cutting up the final product to perpetuate the meme that big business is ruining your movies.

    • @persephonesplayroom420
      @persephonesplayroom420 3 ปีที่แล้ว +40

      @@mounne13 like I said, the extended cut that includes the scene where Babydoll volunteers to have sex with the high roller aka get the lobotomy explains it in a way the DVD release did not. and the simple answer is because she's still the protagonist because the main character idolized her,, even if she isn't THE main character, and the main character fills in things like, she heard them refer when Babydoll first came in as being brought in by her "father" and suddenly in Babydoll's head he would be a priest? Nah. That's from the misrepresented ideals of a mentally ill woman who is trying to piece her world together through the eyes of the heroic efforts of an abuse victim who helped her escape a mental institution.
      How else would Babydoll know things like where the dress at the end of the movie came from (at the farm house after the bus ride), etc? She wouldn't.

    • @Puerco-Potter
      @Puerco-Potter 3 ปีที่แล้ว +36

      That was the problem with the movie twist, like, the "this was her story all along" wasn't earned in the least, I really doubt the extended cut would fix it though, it's a tall order.

      @vixxcelacea2778 3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      @@Puerco-Potter They should of had a spinning top like in inception to ground it. Anything that was Sweet Pea's fantasy should of had some representation in the background and clues that we are in her mind. Some small flash back about some innocuous, but important to her object would do the trick. Say a doll her and her sister got to share as kids. Have that pop up randomly in places in the background, or representations of it, to show that we are in someone's mind specifically.

He is an insane person in an insane asylum turning the inmates, orderlies and doctors around him that terrorize him into figments of his imagination that he can fight on an equal ground inside of his mind. The movie is intentionally vague and superficial so that people that have no idea what goes on in the Seedy underbelly of society and the depths of people's minds and souls won't have a fucking clue what is happening in the movie.

      @@mrcritical6751 That's the beauty of cinema, sometimes you don't see what others see. Let me tell you what I see in MoS and BvS.
      I see Plato's The Republic. I see a story of a "just man" who is put up against an authoritarian society that rejects him because they cannot possibly believe he is good. And so his death is the only thing that can inspire them.
      I see modern American politics. I see a selfless immigrant going up against the rich white elite and the fear-mongering media. And I see a message saying that we can un-do our wrongs, that we can be redeemed.
      You don't have to see that, you don't even have to like the way it's executed. I defend BvS on paper but I certainly don't think it's perfect. My point here is that it's disingenuous to cross into a realm of personal insults and attempts at objectivity when film is by definition, subjective.

Add some stylistic and set design changes to tie the layers of the fantasy together better- IE hint at what inspired each fantasy in the main character's mind- and it could have been way better.

      Yeah, basically. There's a lot more than that in there, but Snyder just really did fail to make it relevant or noteworthy. The idea that, "If you were distracted by the T&A, you were the 'clients'," was an interesting twist, but really wasn't presented well. I do believe the Director's Cut really does help the film, but it still doesn't make the higher order concepts shine at all.

    Snyder’s style has always been great. He knows how to compose a shot, there’s tons of great imagery, action, music and he’s one of the few directors today that gives his movie an opening credit that hooks you in.
    The problem with him however is that while he has style, there’s no substance. His characters are choppy and always have the same problem: pain. Snyder loves pain and his movies always go down the same path: life sucks. Out of all the movies I’ve seen from him, has there ever been a victory? There always has to be a loss, and it wouldn’t be so bad if maybe the story was great.
    That’s another thing, Snyder knows how to bring you in, but not keep you. His movies sometimes go on and on, and by the middle part, not much happens. And can he try not to act like an “artiste”? Just by his trailers Snyder wants you to think his movie will be deep, but the dilemma and especially the resolution don’t seem to reflect that. At least Michael Bay knows he’s action schlock. You’re not Kubrick or Scorsese, zack. Stop it.

    I always thought that the movie was really about Sweet Pea. Babydoll is the one we see more because Sweet pea made her the hero because she did help her escape. I got that from the way the movie started with the curtains opening on a stage and Babydoll sitting with her back to the audience if you edit to the mental hospital when it would look like she was looking at Sweet pea. Also with the first labotomy it goes from Babydoll to Sweet pea wearing a wig like it was really Sweet pea that fantasies everything that happened. Also the line "this was never my story." I am probably seriously reaching though.

      @@rolandbaldwin That always made sense to me because it always seemed like Sweet Pea was "in charge" and her delusional fantasies were her way of dealing with the everything that happened to herself, sister and friends. Babydoll and Sweet Pea are both in that place as a result of their sisters although for different reasons. We never learn the backstory of Sweet Pea and Rocket( I think that was her sister). Babydoll wanted to help Sweet Pea because she had given everything up to help and protect her sister and thought she deserved to free over herself because of what happened to her own sister and her actions resulting in the deaths of the others. It's a movie you have to watch a few times because the first time it's like "what was that?" I think the bus driver was added as the one leading them because he ultimately let her get her total freedom. It's also Sweet Pea doing the narrations at the beginning and end. The bus driver is the same one who guided their journey but it is just a fantasy. The bus driver is real but the audience sees the manifestation in Sweet Peas mind of a person who is important to her. Possibly her father. I think that's the narrations about angels who show up and can take any form. Again I could be reaching, but it's interesting if you think about it and watch it with that in mind.

      @@mnicolemortensen7 I think Critic is a bit cynical about Zack Snyder to actually sit back and analyse the film properly but it took me ages to figure it out. His view of Snyder clouded his ability to read what was happening. That's what I think anyhow. • @mnicolemortensen7
      @mnicolemortensen7 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@rolandbaldwin I think so too. I think Zack Snyder wanted to make something serious, but because of his reputation there were certain expectations. It's almost like how the Critic feels about the Dr. Suess movies, except this movie didn't have source material you could study. If his name wasn't attached to it would have it been considered differently? My answer is probably so. It's a great movie, but if you are expecting a comic book hero movie this isn't it. If I could describe this movie in reference to other movies the best I can do is a mix of Girl Interrupted, Inception, In the Mouth of Madness. The movie was also marketed horribly. The animated shorts that came out were very well done but gave us a lot of backstory to things that weren't important. They were cool and comic/fantasy based but it gave false ideas of what to expect. The fantasy is essential to the story because it is the characters way of escaping trauma, but it's not the focus. It's boring because the characters know it's not really real. In their mind escaping the torment they under also seems like the greatest fantasy. Why we don't see any of them dance and they escape to the fantasy world is because dance =rape and they "escape" when it's happening to a "reality" where the power dynamic is shifted and they are in control. The rape is happening in reality the same time the fantasy is happening. That's why the girls are sexualized but also fighting. They are victims but at the same time want to fight back but are in a place and situation where they can't.

She tries to escape her pain for losing her sister, and that very place. Baby doll represents Sweet pea's body, while Sweet pea represents her own mind. When Baby doll gets lobotomized because she decided to let go, her body is the only thing left in the mental institute while she's not there anymore, as the director of the mental institute says she is in paradise, in the last scene Sweet pea just gets in the bus and leaves, with the sign on the road which says paradise diner.

    Since Sweetpea(Abby Cornish) is the one narrating, I feel it's _her_ story. The entire movie is basically her fantasy since she's going crazy and just wants to leave. It also explains as to why she immediately gets the girls to go along with her and no one else in the brothel.
    There are little hints in the dialogue that also support that Jamie Chung, Jeni Malone, and Hudgens are figments of her memory when Malone's character says that three inmates tried to escape and died.....when it was Chung, Malone, and Hudgens' characters that tried to escape....and died.
    Babydoll is probably someone that Sweetpea looked up to since Sweetpea is dressed like Babydoll during the brother scene.
    There is also the Emily Browning song about suicide that plays at a certain point in the picture that gives us a hint of how Sweetpea is feeling (i.e. she's suicidal).
    At the end, she says: "Now, fight!"
    While we see Babydoll, it's actually Sweetpea fighting through the lobotomy. Since the psychiatrist is now the head, maybe that recovery process is sped up.
    The film overall isn't brilliant. It still plays like a film that needed a few rewrites to get solidified, but it manages to have some elements that make it a film that is a bit more deep than given credit for. It mixes David Lynch with action and some elements that would be seen in Inception.

      Not bad points, but the critic is still correct that we learn nothing about anyone. It actually proves how flat they are -- that it could be anyone of their stories, because they're all so interchangeable.
      While "critiquing misogyny" might've been Snyders original intent, there's nothing more misogynistic than sexing up every woman and making nothing more to them than having trauma. It gets old that women characters in general need to be sexually abused or have a love interest as their motivation in life/ story.
      If this says anything about how non notable this movie is: I watched it and actually was babydoll for Halloween that year, yet didn't remember much about it except fighting and costumes. I'm someone that remembers the basic stories of 99% of what I've watched.

    • @kirk1701
      @kirk1701 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you for your reply. However, I have to disagree with something you mentioned:
      Critic isn't 'correct.' He's merely giving his own opinion, as we all are.
      As aforementioned in my earlier post, the girls (not Babydoll) are interchangeable since they are a figment of Sweetpea's imagination. They're part of her fantasy since that's the only thing she has going on to pass the time while she tries to escape; Babydoll is in foremost in the movie because that's the girl that made the most impact on her.
      There's nothing wrong sexing up women as long as they're given strong characters to balance that out. I'm sure no woman (or man) complained of misandry with Jason Mamoa as Aquaman or Chris Hemsworth as Thor. Jena Malone, in an interview, actually thought the women were 'kick ass' no matter how they were dressed; the male interviewer tried to continually push that the film was written from a 12-year-old's pov. (As someone who was a 12-year-old kid at one point, I found that highly inaccurate).
      Again, I actually don't think that Zack Snyder intended for the film to be as deep as some of us(giving it a second look) are seeing it.

    The fact that the timid character died first and the 'tough' one escaped made me think it was a coming of age story. The loss of the mother reveals that the father is greedy and violent, which means the mother must have been the protector. The main character sees the danger her father represents and wants to stop him... But she's still a child and lashing out at her father just hurts her sister. Kids leaving shitty homes are often faced with the difficult decision of when to leave. They are trying to figure out their own life and yet they fear leaving younger siblings behind.
    I thought of the lobotomy as that threshold between childhood and maturity. Each dream within the dream involves our bland lead character making no impact on her own life even though she imagines that she's the most important one. She loses her timid and fearful part, then one part sacrifices itself and I have no idea what part that was supposed to be. I would have had that be regret.The longing to restart your life because you do not feel ready to face the world and focus on the opportunities you did not have, the time you wasted, and the pain you've been through. Even the list of items could be those things we believe we need in order to enter the adult world- things we do not have and are tricky to get but that come easy to others. I bet everyone has had experiences where they were afraid that their ownership of something they worked hard to get and/or their self worth could be yanked away. (Imposter syndrome?)
    The fact that the woman who escaped has more of an adult look (taller, not wearing an anime schoolgirl outfit, and arguing with the regret personality to shut up and move on). So the main character is childhood. Bad things can happen to her, she make her own ways to escape reality, she often looks fearful but imagines herself as a badass. That's why she tells the 'adult' character that it's not her story. It's not about what we go through as children, it's about who we decide to become.
    Maybe it was a concept that would have actually been better in an anime, where you can draw the same character with different feelings. A timid character is thin and small and may dress in bigger clothes to hide the curves that come as girls start becoming women. Another could be judgemental and either copy or mock others around her- the part of life where we try to figure out who we are while being bombarded with everyone else who may also be searching or already figured out who they are. Tropes and cliches and so many personalities all around.
    Then you still have the regret personality that would constantly be missing something like a pen or an umbrella or lunch; and never seem to have the right thing to wear. Then childhood and adulthood. All the same face but still different.
    ...Anyway, that is what I thought the movie was going for even if it was not representing it very well. Then the lobotomy happened. Is this a curveball and all that personal growth was for nothing? A metaphor about waiting too long to find out who you are before the opportunity is taken from you? Just a crappy ending?? What?!

    • @renji90998
      @renji90998 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That may be the most accurate explanation ever. Maybe the lobotomy is basically life and death. As it happens she's looking back on all the choices she's made through a filter. Life is what we make of it. Death is mainly reality. Even when you think you're the main character, you're not. And don't always get a happy ending, but hope for the best with what you've done with your life. Baby Doll may have failed to escape but at least saved someone. A bitter sweet ending but I guess that was the point

So, instead of the usual ending where Baby Doll might have used what she imagined to somehow escape... she dies. If we can't stop death, and life is something other people can take from us easily and without remorse, our goal is to make our lives mean something. Making the world better somehow for other people.
      Plus, Snyder has stated he thinks of his movies as art...And when you create art you may want it to mean several different things so there can be discussion and because that's the beauty of art.

      Sometimes you got to hit people over the head for them to get something. Unfortunately hitting people over the head hurts and while some people might like that type of pain others tend to lash out at the thing or person that hit them. I see it all the time to varying degrees. I take the pain as a blessing that I can still feel something and am not dead inside.

      My take on this topic:
      It's the difference between being sexualized and objectified in the asylum/club and the empowerment of actually getting to have autonomy in the fight sequences. To paraphrase Jenna Malone, "when I imagine the superhero version of myself I'm not in sweatpants." And assuming women are only "sexy" for men is also sexist. (Not saying that's how OP feels, just regarding the common takeaway they reference.) There's a pretty big lack of male gaze shots in this movie.
      Using Transformers as an example:
      There is a massive difference between any shot of Megan Fox in Transformers to any shot of any single one of these girls. Megan IS objectified by the movie. Specifically by her wardrobe and the camera.. These girls are imagining their fantasy hero versions of themselves the way they want and the camera follows them the same as it would follow Shia Lebouf.
      The club is to show us exactly how the men see them and the true nature of what is being done to these girls without resorting to the exploitation of women imprisoned in an asylum being repeatedly SAed. The fight sequences are the disassociations of the victims instead of the horrific actions being done to them by the staff.

The switch the brothel caught me off-guard because I thought maybe the mental institution was a fake out somehow. Thanks for watching this movie and reviewing it. You're not quite getting it. The whole movie is not perceived from Babydoll's point of view. The movie is told linearly through the minds of two different characters. The switch first happens when Babydoll and Sweetpea meet eyes. Sweetpea is acting out what is to be Babydoll's fate on the stage. Then you switch to Sweatpea's hypnotic view of the asylum. Sweetpea's hypnosis is fading and the dance hall is a thin veil of what's really going on. Whenever you see the dance hall, that's Sweetpea's pov. When Babydoll is eventually hypnotized she sees the asylum as a battlefield. Dancing and battle is a replacement for the obvious rape and abuse that's happening in the asylum and the therapist gives the girls a place in their minds to escape or combat mentally their abuse. You are seeing one linear storyline being told in three different perceptions. Reality (the cold dark dank asylum, Sweetpea's vision (the thinly disguised dancehall brothel which is just slightly better than what's really happening as Sweetpea is on the verge of losing faith), and Babydoll's pov which is the battle. Hey, I know this movie is not for everyone. But when you understand the linear story being told from three different perspectives, the movie becomes much more powerful. It's ambitious and maybe too hard of a concept to present-day audiences who might only see cute girls in anime costumes fighting dragons. This is a movie about women being brutally abused, but in an act of grace, the asylums therapist doctor tries to give them a place to hide in their own minds when the abuses occur. While the other girls have settled on a dance hall fantasy that barely protects them, the therapist gives Babydoll a place where she can feel powerful and have the will to fight back. Each girl sees their world through their own filter. And the movie's twist is indeed that it was never really a babydolls story, it was Sweetpea's story. Babydoll gives Sweetpea the push to escape. And ultimately Babydoll's mission was to bring the whole fucking place down. Even if the price was her life.

      It was that content they used to sell the film of as something awesome in the trailers, then you watched it and where so confused of what you just seen you were unsure it you just missed the real bigger picture. In the end its just such a comically bad attempt at a point that fails on so many levels it managed to have simply no working point at all.

      but with no character development, stakes, or motivation. ofc the fights are badass and it's fun to watch out of context but it loses value when you look too deep. the fight scene with the samurai I watched on youtube with a friend and really really liked even though I thought it was a bit ridiculous that moment was fun to watch. but when you put it into the context the movie is trying to put it in it makes no sense and becomes bland, even more so when there are six different fight scenes just like that.

    • @destruction8946

      Kind of like the RWBY trailers the fight scenes are good as cool spectacles, but for a movie you need more connecting tissue and having the fight scenes be dream sequences pulled all the excitement out of them in the wider context of the movie.
