Alita liking chocolate is, I think, actually a reference to the manga, where it's shown that she can basically subsist entirely on chocolate. It provides the sugars her brain needs, while her artificial body otherwise requires little to no nutrients. I thought it was a good touch!
True, though the sugars in fruits like the oranges would work just as well. But I am guessing the chocolate thing is a bit more endearing, since it's a type of candy and thus helps make her seem mroe childlike and innocent for how much she loves it.
There is hope. Fan backlash changed "Meow" to a Sonic the Hedgehog we actually wanted. The studios listening to the fans might be rare, but it has happened and it can happen again.

The eyes only distracted me for like 10 minutes. Then they were just part of the character. Kinda like how the animation in Spiderverse distracted me until my eyes got used to it.
To be fair i looked at those eyes on the trailer and was like that looks like shit but then i watched the movie later and it was good alltho ending was a letdown but still enjoyable movie.

Rosa did a phenomenal job bringing Alita to life. Personally, I found her smile contagious and it was truly a joy watching it in theaters multiple times. I just hope we get a sequel lol
I actually liked her using the dog’s blood for the marks under her eyes. I thought it showed not only her innocence but the distortion of it - it was unsettling to see the wide-eyed, kind character do such a thing and it kinda tipped me off that there was a darker side to her nature. It also showed her desire for justice for those who deserved it, but never got it. Just my thoughts.

@@misterwishart Adaptations fail because they don't keep the style or spirit of their source material, i.e every Hollywood attempt at an anime adaptation before this. This one does keep the style and spirit, including the density of the manga and anime's lineup.
I'm rather sad this movie didn't do too well. It was legitimately one of the best movies of last year IMO, and by far the best live-action anime adaptation thus far.
To be fair, is calling it the best live action anime adaptation really much ? Not trying to sound too negative but a vast majority of them a garbage so not much competition.
It was a good film but 2019 was extremely strong year for film. It didnt have much going for it in terms of advertisement. Coming out in theaters during the dead period of the year was the smartest move they could've done with it.
And he didn’t have a preexisting nonsensical hate train like Scarlet Johansson does, so nobody pretended to be angry about him playing a Japanese character for this movie.
My wife and I, just on a whim, rented this movie having never heard of it (she likes Mahershala Ali, I like Christoph Waltz so we gave it a shot.) We loved every second of it. We were so excited at the idea of a sequel but it's not certain...If it doesn't, then I hope it's one of those movies that gets a cult fandom and sequel 5 or 10 years from now, but I just know it probably wouldn't have the same cast and magic as the first did. I really hope they follow through with the sequel sooner rather than later.
If you want a sequel buy the movie on Blu-Ray or DVD. It's the only way we'll get one. The movie did just okay in theaters so the home video sales need to be really good.
Rodriguez built the Alita sets to last for 15 years and only 1 of those years has passed since the movie came out. He and Cameron fully intend to make a sequel, it's just a matter of when.
@@johnnysasaki Actually James Cameron still owns the rights to everything except the distribution of the movies. If Disney pisses him off, they could lose a potential cash cow. As long as he doesn't concede ground, they can only grind their teeth in frustration because the only power they have is to release the movies, not get involved in making them.
I love this movie and hated how critics and Twitter tried to tear this film down unfairly just to prop up the mediocre movie Captain Marvel So glad that now It's getting the recognition it deserves

@@robpagenkopf5829 the Alita / Marvel war is a mess... it's verry hard to know how it started and who started it... the Alita chalange is a good exemple, the goal was to challenge people to try Alita, but it was started by a guy with more conservative ideas who disliked Cap Marvel and after that internet did the rest. The problem is that many youtubers have directly compared Alita to Cap Marvel because of the story similarities between the two films, it did not help, especialy when they made video called "Alita vs Cap feminist". The irony is that Alita contains more feminist stuff than Cap Marvel when you look deep in it haha :P . And yes it is possible that a small group of people voluntarily wanted to use alita against Marvel and Disney; whenever they criticized Marvel they tag the AlitaArmy. This ended up causing a clash, many fans demanded that everyone who spoke of Cap Marvel stop using the hastag because the reputation of the group was really degraded. I must also admit that some reviews did not help either... yes a beautiful mess.
Miracle of miracles. i'm surprised he held his ego in check long enough to actually say ANYTHING positive given his propensity for doing a whole production number about how something sucks and if you disagree with him you're wrong.
14:11 i actually think why they made that change: they showed Alita as an idealist that wanted to fight evil and save the world, thinking she was the hero the world needed. nobody takes her seriously and then she gets torn to pieces, showing that a pure heart and good intentions are not enough to survive in a world of cyborg bounty hunters.
That's another movie change I didn't like. Alita never set out to 'be the heroine the world needed' in the manga. She fought because the situation demanded it. Whatever naive thinking she had early on the manga was soon dashed to pieces like her original cyborg body.
I was just pissed that the movie ended on a cliffhanger for a sequel that clearly won't happen now. Also - her eyes make some sense in-universe. Since she's actually Martian, larger eyes would be more ideal for the lower light conditions of that planet (and she may have done some fighting in the outer planets also). If you look closely in the flashback sequences all her companions have them too.
I stand by my claim that the film was failed by its advertising, not that it was difficult. That heart scene was perfect to build two separate trailers with it as the end points, one for sci-fi fans and one for romance fans, then use targeted advertising on social media and sites like TH-cam to make sure people saw the right ad for them. TLDR: old media failed to engage with modern audiences by not capitalizing on both audiences it could appeal to via Social media and sites like TH-cam.

Not even the advertising itself but because all the main stream sources reviewing it and advertising it were calling it “problamatic” and trying to drive the movie into the ground so they could promote the garbage captain marvel as a true “feminist hero” movie instead.
To be honest I agree with you on the advertisement, but I think the biggest reason is that not enough people knew what this movie was. This was an older anime, that came out in the 90s, so unless you are a hardcore anime fan, or grew up in those times, you probably missed it. Marketing anime is very tricky, and while it has a huge following now, I don't think it's quite large enough to be considered untapped market potential (might be by next generation). It has to speak with and resonate with a wide enough audience while giving the fans to make it worth while and I just think that won't be possible for a while. On top this, this was released during the time where marvel was wrapping up their cinematic universe, not to mention Sonic the Hedgehog movie being announced, and those projects were soaking up most of the attention.... Alita was kind of a small project among juggernauts, and probably would have done better in 2017 or 2018.
I was surprised how well handled the movie was, considering that they only covered a very early portion of the HUGE lore GUNNM (the manga) has. This movie is proof that anime can have good western adaptations when left in good hands.
@@98953812 Indeed, it actually was. I think it was his Alita edition of 10 Minute Cooking School, something he did on a lot of his DVD's since....Spy Kids 1? At least since Once Upon A Time In Mexico. Y'know, back when his movies regularly had tons of DVD extras.

@Black Ninja With those huge eyes, experiencing all those new things while being absolutely hyped about them, it makes her seem like a kid. I think that ended up having a "bonding" effect. The movie had a bit too much filler, but the characters were always charming. And I just can't stop liking Christoph Waltz even if he basically plays the same role in each movie.
There is only one petition for movie sequels and once it is done running, it is done for good. The last time any signature petition made any difference was after the third season of Family Guy.
And Japanese live action Death Note movies as well as Japanese live action Attack on Titan movies and Japanese live action Rurouni Kenshin movies. Basically best ones are from Japan.
@@Mecha82 - The 2017 live action adaptation of "Blade of the Immortal" by Miike Takashi was great IMHO, very good cast. I hope that with the sequel going on right now, it might make Miike want to do either a sequel taking part in the OG manga, or an adaptation of the new one.
This was everything Hollywood claims they want: a strong female character whose not sexualized, awesome action and special effects, and great acting. And yet, it was slept on while the boring crap-fest that was “Captain Marvel” was instead given all the attention. It’s a crime that this film wasn’t more successful than it was. (It was also released in a horrible, the month of January)
The problem isn't with the movie, it's with the audience. The braindead blue checkmarks on Twitter immediately assumed that, since it was both based on an anime and being hyped by straight white males, it was going to be "offensively problematic, filled with male toxicity and patriarchal messages" (I actually read that in one of the many hit pieces that came out to try and kill the movie before it was released) despite ticking almost every one of their diversity checkboxes.
It also accomplished something else that Captain Marvel failed at. Doing an overpowered hero with amnesia without making her void of personality or likability.
@@Dargonhuman It was also the mainstream media that kept constantly putting the film down questioning the 'boob' size of Alita's new body, or anything they could find to downplay it compared to Captain Marvel. There were many hit pieces before the movie came out trying to put a bad light on it while they at the same time was praising & anointing Captain Marvel as the second coming of cinema.

This move is the most under-appreciated gem of the past decade. Between the technology, the writing, the acting, this is an amazing experience and Hollywood really should have showered THIS movie in Oscars and not the FernGully remake. God the OSCARs disgust me, they represent nothing anymore, winning an OSCAR means you ticked off all the boxes, not made an amazing film.
It ended the way it did so if it got a sequel, it could lead off from here, or if it didn't it could just be seen as its own one off thing, so it serves as a dual purpose.
And this's a guy who not too long ago claimed that he hasn't seen "that many" anime. Seriously, how does a guy whose repertoire consists mostly of mainstream junk like FMA wind up watching straight through a show that's full of gruesome mutilations, sexual abuse, tons of nudity, several involving girls who might not be ready for kindergarten but still rip people apart with a smile on their faces, and just about any kind of depravity or cruelty you would want to think of and then some?

the cgi isnt given enough credit. rosa's face is 100% on screen and without her emoting the character wouldnt work. her micro expressions and skin imperfections / tiny scars were preserved in the rendering so it really IS rosa. the heart scene is in the manga except she is betting her life against boomerang mans character.
The sad thing is that GITS is even better than GUNNM, yea both are really good ones but GITS takes everything more deeper.. and they have the work already done an damn movie.. a movie already done, a damn movie that is loved by almost everyone... forget the manga for 1 second; I will say it one more so we can understand the most basic error... a damn movie was already made only 1 job.. take it to live action, made everything that was made in that movie to live action... you take the movie, watch it with your team then do alll in live action... 1 simple job, and they failed.
If people would stop overrating the Ghost in the Shell anime, they COULD enjoy the live action movie. I found it friggin boring and watched the live action one for the scene recreations and designs, and wasn't disappointed. Thankfully they didn't remake the pseudo-deep philosophical babble you weebs love so much.

Ya, especially when Alita fans think their movie was more popular when Captain Marvel tripled it at the box office. But hey, at least Alita beat DC's Captain Marvel movie. Remember Alita fans, you can say your movie is better (art is subjective, so you aren't objectively wrong), but you sure as hell can't say either more people saw or it, or it was more popular than the movie that got second at the box office six weeks after its release (and was only second to the highest grossing film of all time)
Captain Marvel was a big brand name coming off a huge multifilm megaproject series thing. People felt like they had to watch it. I believe it might have felt like missing an episode of GoT (think season 1). And BOY I remember the shitstorm it kicked off. I didn't watch it. Never was into the superhero thing. But, well, you can't deny Cap. Marvel rode off the success of the other movies. Alita (which I didn't watch either, but wanted to. Until I forgot about it) was it's own thing. No brand recognition, not coming off a big franchise. It was that small poster you saw in the corner and went "huh?". Alita's flop was kind of a tactical mistake by the movie release people. You simply do not release an expensive to make movie next to a marvel movie. It might be "Marvel's Captain Ass" and you literally stare at an ass for 2h, yet people will flock to the marvel thing just because marvel. And I heard and saw archival proof of rotten tomatoes deleting 50k Cap. Marvel reviews, so no matter how bad it might be, and how willing review aggregates are to bend to corporate will and let the consumer be ripped off to not hurt the profits of giant media corporations, there's proof people will watch it.
Also, this the season of the Superhero Movie. It's what's "in" right now. Both seem to have similar elements and certainly the superhero thing helped promote Alita to some degree. But if it was the season of "anime cinematic adaptation", which Alita could have helped kick off by Doug's praise of the film, the figures would have been different. And it would not cut into Disney's profit margins. And you can like both. You can still think one is better. People turn weirdly tribal into seeminghly competing cultural products that are not mutually exclusive. I'm more familiar with the Megadeth vs Metallica thing in Thrash Metal. But that at least had the reason of Dave Mustaine being rightfully kicked from Metallica in the early days for being a dick and forming Megadeth while holding a grudge for a decade, then Metallica becoming mainstream. I don't know. I'm kinda bummed out there won't be a sequel to Alita. Doug made me feel like watching the movie but I now know it will feel incomplete as there's no proper end to the story.

I love how this adaptation carries over the eastern view on cyborgs ("replace part of my body with machine? Okay.") instead of the western luddistic one ("Replace part of my body with machine? OH NO, my *HUMANITY* is being drained away!!!!"). Something that _other_ recent Hollywood adaptation about anime cyborgs didn't had guts to do.

This movie deserves a sequel, and we do. Dammit, i was so amazed when i saw it. Yeah, it's an adaptation, but it is so well made despite some defaults, you can feel the people who tried their best to do something enjoyable. They deserve that chance to do even better. I was litteraly depressed when i saw the box office score when getting outside of the theater...For once, could people like real good things ? I loved the battle when she gets her body destroyed. For me it was so badass to see a character damaging her body to the point she only got an arm left, and was still so angry. Ha and you dit not mention the "pathetic' line, who ended up as a meme. So cool.

Alita's failure was on the heads of the fools in Hollywood that made Dragon Ball Evolution, and the Marketing Teams behind Ghost in the Shell. I freaking adore this movie, and saw it a few times... but when I first went to see it, I was apprehensive, and almost didn't go, because of my experience with all the other "adaptations."

@@logicaloverdrive8197 never listen to critic reviews (not NC). when it comes to movies or tv, i look at audience reviews. If its high audience, i usually end up liking it as well. The Orville is a great example of this. Season 1, Critics gave it a 10%. audience gave it a 95%. I loved it. Alita, i LOVED it. Hoping each day to hear news of a sequal or TV show on netflix or Amazon.

I just assumed Alita had big eyes in the movie because she's not human and her designer was an anime fan. I also really liked Alita in this because she was genuinely likeable. Unlike Rey from Star Wars where she started off likeable and instantly went Mary Sue "yOu HaVe To LiKe HeR."

I think I recall back on social media how people argued that the actor playing Alita should've been played by an Asian woman because they thought the big cgi eyes was just the director trying to make the character look more anime. But that sounds stupid because regardless they would've done the same thing anyways just because it's supposed to kinda show Alita isn't human. Casting an Asian woman makes no difference.
main problem is they try to cram 3 story arcs of the comic into a single movie... really 4 counting her flashbacks. ...hmmm now that I think about it the rating may have had a lot to do with it. instead of turning her into a hunter warrior cutting off heads to earn the money she needs, they made her a roller ball player. that way she wouldn't look like a merciless killer and be more role modely.
I loved this movie! I sure hope Disney’s acquisition of 20th century Fox didn’t crush the possibility of a sequel, because this film deserves it better than any film does.
Didn't at the end Fox only have the rights of distribution, the owner of the movie/animation rights is Cameron.. he can take everything from this movie and do it to any other studio.
That's very dark how that doctor sharin was dismembered and stuffed into a box with minimal body parts but just enough to see and feel whats going on. That is some human centipede nightmare fuel there

Alita: has amazing and charming characters, ties in themes within its story, great VFX, awesome female action hero with personality Captain Marvel: what is storytelling? Guess one made a billion dollars?
@@toxic_revenant3 i can explain A) MCU movies have set a high standart, which means that If one is mediocre, it is considered bad. B) Both Brie Larson and her character of Carol Denvers came of as unlikeable and douchy. C) Marvel kept pushing the whole Feminist angle which comes of bad. Especially in a Post-Wonder Woman world. D) Captain Marvel was seriouly overpowered. So much so, that they had to cut her out of large chunks of Endgame.
When I first saw the trailer I thought it was gonna suck and be another addition to the list of bad anime movies. But after awhile I saw more trailers and it started to grow on me. The. I saw it in theaters and I can safely say this was one of the best live action anime movies.
The stigma of anime to live action being horrible is probably why this movie is more popular after its release and why it did not do so good at release.
I remembered reading about James Cameron's announcement of the Battle Angel movie in a now out-of-print magazine called Anime Insider in the mid-2000s. I recall it had a picture of Cameron with a speech bubble saying, "I'm king of the world!" followed by a cutout of Alita from the manga adding, "... and death to all who say otherwise!" The article mentioned that the movie would be based around the motorball arc and I remember that after reading said article I had vivid fantasies about how the movie would look with Alita tearing up the motorball track while the stadium audience made up of a mix of normal humans and cyborgs cheered her on accompanied by gritty-sounding techno music like the music featured on the soundtracks for the Matrix films. The motorball scenes in this movie brought me back to those memories all those years ago hitting me with a wave of nostalgia more intense than anything I ever felt before. In my eyes the movie turned out to be everything I ever wanted the Alita film to be back then and more (minus the gritty-sounding techno music but looking back I should have realized only hacks would use such an obvious musical style for the soundtrack).
Well, I think something bluesy would work as a soundtrack, something Cowboy Bebop-esque. Alita even does something that looks like a blues performance blues at one point in the manga.
So, about those eyes: I don't know if anyone else out there remembers, but in the original trailer her eyes were WAY bigger than they ended up being, to the point that, when I saw said trailer, I cringed at just how big they were. It's why I never saw it when it first came out. I did find out later that they made her eyes a bit smaller than in the initial trailer, and I went ahead and got a copy to see for myself just what they did with what is one of my favorite anime and manga series. Most of what you mentioned, both good and bad, I more or less agree with you about. There is, however, one exception to that: Motorball. This is one of those few portions that was missing from the anime that I had wished they included more of it in it, and was happy to see it spotlighted in this movie. It added the perfect bit of action that focused on it being a game rather than just mortal combat, which is what most of this movie, as well as its source material, had focused on. Personally I absolutely loved its addition. At first I was a bit miffed when you said that they dropped the ball on him climbing the tube, but after hearing your reasoning on it, I can kinda see where you're coming from. I still feel they stayed true to the original immensely well, but...yeah, I suppose he wasn't as crazed as he was in the anime, I'll give you that one. Finally, I absolutely loved the end of this review! When that black dude started explaining the shortcomings of Alita I had half-expected Stan from South Park to pop up out of nowhere and ask him, "Morgan Freeman, why is it when everything gets so convoluted you always come out of nowhere to explain everything?" Only to have him respond something to the respect of "I'm not Morgan Freeman. I think you might need some glasses kid." The part with the video climbing the tube was kinda corny, but...meh.
I freaking loved this movie as i loved the original story in manga. It is flawed, for sure. But you can tell the people who did this movie had passion for the original material.
7 minutes in and I kinda don't wanna finish NC's review... he's kinda made me want to experience the movie for myself... yes, no I must stop! Though I LOVE Tamara's added charm, I'm tapping out for now till after I've seen it.
It's flawed, they try to fit too much into the movie, which leaves some of it a bit flat... But there's also so much cool stuff in there too, especially if you can get past some of the "anime" dialogue lol. Personally I'd recommend it, but I'm sure many will have issues with it... But then I had issues with it and still loved it lol.
So Tamara only got a voice role and not go on screen? Doug voiced those movies on Blockbuster City while showing up as the Nostalgia Critic, the main character of his show.
Honestly, it didn't take me very long to adjust to the eyes. I'm only ten minutes into this review as I'm typing this, have never even heard of the actual movie before today, and I'm already too invested to notice that it makes her look anything but adorable.
One thing that also hurt this movie's performance were "professional" critics attacking it in an attempt to prop up Captai Marvel in order to please their corporate overlords.
Professional movie critics aren't someone I go to to see if a movie might be worth a watch specifically for that reason. Same thing for reviews on video games. I go here on youtube for the reviews on things I have any interest in, to dudes like Angry Joe and others that point out ALL the flaws a game has. Graphics I don't really care that much about and Voice-acting can still be laughed at if it's bad. But if the controls suck, if the story sucks, if the characters themselves suck, if it's a Micro-transaction factory that cuts out chunks that SHOULD have been in it to begin with that force you to pay MORE money than the initial price to get the actual game (cough cough Destiny cough)? That's the things I care about, and an ACTUAL gamer or movie-goer is going to care about those things and sharing this info with their viewers, not just telling the viewers what they SHOULD want. We know what we want most of the time, and what we want the entertainment we pay for to have.
If you want a sequel buy the movie on Blu-Ray or DVD. It's the only way we'll get one. The movie did just okay in theaters so the home video sales need to be really good.
The stereotype with girls and chocolate is more oriented around science, actually. Girls are more likely to develop a sweet tooth and chocolate can ease the pains of...that time of the holiday, if you catch my drift. Also, there's a holiday in Japan where girls make homemade chocolate for the guys who treated them on valentine's day. It tastes terrible but its the thought that counts.

Damn, I wish chocolate eased the pains of Aunt Flo's visits.. Also, as Bluebedo said, the holiday, White Day, which is on March 14th, is for guys to repay girls who gave them chocolates on Valentine's Day the month before. Girls don't HAVE to make the chocolates, but if they do, they'll be incentivizing the guy to cook for her because the guy has to 1-up the girl; if you buy expensive chocolates, the guy has to buy even higher priced ones, if you hand-make chocolates, so does he. It also tests whether he noticed, which can help gauge whether he acknowledges the things you do for him or not...

Hollywood fucked up almost all anime adaptions except that one and you want them to make another one live action anime is someting that in my opinon just doesn't work and it doesn't need to work. Even the japanese live action anime that I know of sucks. Honestly I'd rather just watch animated anime rather than people who are only interested in profit make shitty versions of the stories I love.
whitekitsune I don’t know who would be a perfect alucard but Henry Cavill is not the person for it. He’s great in the Witcher and maybe he could do a character similar but I don’t see him as a Dracula. With that said David tennant wouldn’t be a bad choice but I think I see him more as an Alexander Anderson
I think most of it has to be because of Sin City which apparently is one of his favorite movies. I admit, I also do like a lot of his work even if some his movies aren’t that great.
Was working in a movie theatre for a year or so leading up to this film's release. It was pushed back two or three times, meaning the trailer floated through the theatre for months, and I had to hear it a dozen times per shift. I thought it looked weird and most of the people I worked with, like me, didn't know anything about the source material. I forget why I actually stayed after work to watch it one day, but I freaking loved this movie. It had so much charm, great fight sequences, and amazing acting. Never would have watched it had I not worked at the cinema at the time, where I pretty saw everything because I didn't have to pay for tickets. I would encourage everyone to check this out
She also has abnormally big eyes in the manga. It is commented on several times and has very little to do with anime. That is just how her model is designed.
"So, as you may have picked up, this movie is very disjointed but every joint is such a good high" I feel like that line went under the radar for how great of a fitting joke/pun it was
Regarding the bar scene and it "not feeling right," I chalk that up to "this is actually a coming of age story." In the beginning Alita has the body of a child/teen, and that matches her maturity level, and it's only after she gets her new body does she mature. Since this scene is with the child/teen body, I see this as her being an idealistic teenager that constantly makes communist facebook posts and doesn't understand why people are citing the track record of communist regimes. It actually makes perfect sense when you apply that filter.

Alita liking chocolate is, I think, actually a reference to the manga, where it's shown that she can basically subsist entirely on chocolate. It provides the sugars her brain needs, while her artificial body otherwise requires little to no nutrients. I thought it was a good touch!
True, though the sugars in fruits like the oranges would work just as well. But I am guessing the chocolate thing is a bit more endearing, since it's a type of candy and thus helps make her seem mroe childlike and innocent for how much she loves it.

The eyes only distracted me for like 10 minutes. Then they were just part of the character. Kinda like how the animation in Spiderverse distracted me until my eyes got used to it.
It was the dramatic people that complained. I got used to the eyes withing the first 5 minutes of watching.

Rosa did a phenomenal job bringing Alita to life. Personally, I found her smile contagious and it was truly a joy watching it in theaters multiple times. I just hope we get a sequel lol
I actually liked her using the dog’s blood for the marks under her eyes. I thought it showed not only her innocence but the distortion of it - it was unsettling to see the wide-eyed, kind character do such a thing and it kinda tipped me off that there was a darker side to her nature. It also showed her desire for justice for those who deserved it, but never got it. Just my thoughts.
Critic must have forgotten, that that scene came from the anime adaptation.
Alita was very underrated. She had character unlike some other anime adaptation as of recent.

I'm rather sad this movie didn't do too well. It was legitimately one of the best movies of last year IMO, and by far the best live-action anime adaptation thus far.
To be fair, is calling it the best live action anime adaptation really much ? Not trying to sound too negative but a vast majority of them a garbage so not much competition.
It was a good film but 2019 was extremely strong year for film. It didnt have much going for it in terms of advertisement. Coming out in theaters during the dead period of the year was the smartest move they could've done with it.

My wife and I, just on a whim, rented this movie having never heard of it (she likes Mahershala Ali, I like Christoph Waltz so we gave it a shot.)
We loved every second of it. We were so excited at the idea of a sequel but it's not certain...If it doesn't, then I hope it's one of those movies that gets a cult fandom and sequel 5 or 10 years from now, but I just know it probably wouldn't have the same cast and magic as the first did. I really hope they follow through with the sequel sooner rather than later.

@@robpagenkopf5829 the Alita / Marvel war is a mess... it's verry hard to know how it started and who started it... the Alita chalange is a good exemple, the goal was to challenge people to try Alita, but it was started by a guy with more conservative ideas who disliked Cap Marvel and after that internet did the rest. The problem is that many youtubers have directly compared Alita to Cap Marvel because of the story similarities between the two films, it did not help, especialy when they made video called "Alita vs Cap feminist". The irony is that Alita contains more feminist stuff than Cap Marvel when you look deep in it haha :P . And yes it is possible that a small group of people voluntarily wanted to use alita against Marvel and Disney; whenever they criticized Marvel they tag the AlitaArmy. This ended up causing a clash, many fans demanded that everyone who spoke of Cap Marvel stop using the hastag because the reputation of the group was really degraded. I must also admit that some reviews did not help either... yes a beautiful mess.

14:11 i actually think why they made that change: they showed Alita as an idealist that wanted to fight evil and save the world, thinking she was the hero the world needed. nobody takes her seriously and then she gets torn to pieces, showing that a pure heart and good intentions are not enough to survive in a world of cyborg bounty hunters.
That's another movie change I didn't like. Alita never set out to 'be the heroine the world needed' in the manga. She fought because the situation demanded it. Whatever naive thinking she had early on the manga was soon dashed to pieces like her original cyborg body.
I was just pissed that the movie ended on a cliffhanger for a sequel that clearly won't happen now. Also - her eyes make some sense in-universe. Since she's actually Martian, larger eyes would be more ideal for the lower light conditions of that planet (and she may have done some fighting in the outer planets also). If you look closely in the flashback sequences all her companions have them too.
It will be a crime, if they don't create a superior sequel for this gem

I stand by my claim that the film was failed by its advertising, not that it was difficult.
That heart scene was perfect to build two separate trailers with it as the end points, one for sci-fi fans and one for romance fans, then use targeted advertising on social media and sites like TH-cam to make sure people saw the right ad for them.
TLDR: old media failed to engage with modern audiences by not capitalizing on both audiences it could appeal to via Social media and sites like TH-cam.

This might surprise you but people who like romance don't like hearts literally being pulled out of the love interest. Also the lack of focus on the romance and relationships would lead to this movie failing with romance fans.

Not even the advertising itself but because all the main stream sources reviewing it and advertising it were calling it “problamatic” and trying to drive the movie into the ground so they could promote the garbage captain marvel as a true “feminist hero” movie instead.
To be honest I agree with you on the advertisement, but I think the biggest reason is that not enough people knew what this movie was. This was an older anime, that came out in the 90s, so unless you are a hardcore anime fan, or grew up in those times, you probably missed it. Marketing anime is very tricky, and while it has a huge following now, I don't think it's quite large enough to be considered untapped market potential (might be by next generation). It has to speak with and resonate with a wide enough audience while giving the fans to make it worth while and I just think that won't be possible for a while. On top this, this was released during the time where marvel was wrapping up their cinematic universe, not to mention Sonic the Hedgehog movie being announced, and those projects were soaking up most of the attention.... Alita was kind of a small project among juggernauts, and probably would have done better in 2017 or 2018.

My favorite part about the "I give you my heart" scene is how the two of them acknowledge afterward how awkward the moment it was.
This movie did the impossible: It made me ignore the huge eyes at some point, which are the equivalent of the stupid "Truth or Dare" smile.
I couldn't get over them. Besides the trailer pretty much spoils the story. And from what I read on the wiki the real story isn't much, either.

@Black Ninja With those huge eyes, experiencing all those new things while being absolutely hyped about them, it makes her seem like a kid. I think that ended up having a "bonding" effect. The movie had a bit too much filler, but the characters were always charming. And I just can't stop liking Christoph Waltz even if he basically plays the same role in each movie.

I hope that with the sequel going on right now, it might make Miike want to do either a sequel taking part in the OG manga, or an adaptation of the new one.
This was everything Hollywood claims they want: a strong female character whose not sexualized, awesome action and special effects, and great acting. And yet, it was slept on while the boring crap-fest that was “Captain Marvel” was instead given all the attention. It’s a crime that this film wasn’t more successful than it was. (It was also released in a horrible, the month of January)
The problem isn't with the movie, it's with the audience. The braindead blue checkmarks on Twitter immediately assumed that, since it was both based on an anime and being hyped by straight white males, it was going to be "offensively problematic, filled with male toxicity and patriarchal messages" (I actually read that in one of the many hit pieces that came out to try and kill the movie before it was released) despite ticking almost every one of their diversity checkboxes.
It also accomplished something else that Captain Marvel failed at. Doing an overpowered hero with amnesia without making her void of personality or likability.

And this's a guy who not too long ago claimed that he hasn't seen "that many" anime. Seriously, how does a guy whose repertoire consists mostly of mainstream junk like FMA wind up watching straight through a show that's full of gruesome mutilations, sexual abuse, tons of nudity, several involving girls who might not be ready for kindergarten but still rip people apart with a smile on their faces, and just about any kind of depravity or cruelty you would want to think of and then some?

the cgi isnt given enough credit. rosa's face is 100% on screen and without her emoting the character wouldnt work. her micro expressions and skin imperfections / tiny scars were preserved in the rendering so it really IS rosa. the heart scene is in the manga except she is betting her life against boomerang mans character.

The sad thing is that GITS is even better than GUNNM, yea both are really good ones but GITS takes everything more deeper.. and they have the work already done an damn movie.. a movie already done, a damn movie that is loved by almost everyone... forget the manga for 1 second; I will say it one more so we can understand the most basic error... a damn movie was already made only 1 job.. take it to live action, made everything that was made in that movie to live action... you take the movie, watch it with your team then do alll in live action... 1 simple job, and they failed.

If people would stop overrating the Ghost in the Shell anime, they COULD enjoy the live action movie. I found it friggin boring and watched the live action one for the scene recreations and designs, and wasn't disappointed. Captain Marvel was a big brand name coming off a huge multifilm megaproject series thing.
People felt like they had to watch it. I believe it might have felt like missing an episode of GoT (think season 1).
And BOY I remember the shitstorm it kicked off. I didn't watch it. Never was into the superhero thing. But, well, you can't deny Cap. Marvel rode off the success of the other movies.
Alita (which I didn't watch either, but wanted to. Until I forgot about it) was it's own thing. No brand recognition, not coming off a big franchise. It was that small poster you saw in the corner and went "huh?".
Alita's flop was kind of a tactical mistake by the movie release people. You simply do not release an expensive to make movie next to a marvel movie. It might be "Marvel's Captain Ass" and you literally stare at an ass for 2h, yet people will flock to the marvel thing just because marvel. And I heard and saw archival proof of rotten tomatoes deleting 50k Cap. Marvel reviews, so no matter how bad it might be, and how willing review aggregates are to bend to corporate will and let the consumer be ripped off to not hurt the profits of giant media corporations, there's proof people will watch it.
Also, this the season of the Superhero Movie. It's what's "in" right now.
Both seem to have similar elements and certainly the superhero thing helped promote Alita to some degree. But if it was the season of "anime cinematic adaptation", which Alita could have helped kick off by Doug's praise of the film, the figures would have been different. And it would not cut into Disney's profit margins.
And you can like both. You can still think one is better. People turn weirdly tribal into seeminghly competing cultural products that are not mutually exclusive. I'm more familiar with the Megadeth vs Metallica thing in Thrash Metal. But that at least had the reason of Dave Mustaine being rightfully kicked from Metallica in the early days for being a dick and forming Megadeth while holding a grudge for a decade, then Metallica becoming mainstream.
I don't know. I'm kinda bummed out there won't be a sequel to Alita. Doug made me feel like watching the movie but I now know it will feel incomplete as there's no proper end to the story.
Yeah, Caplain Marvel damaged Alita by that online war and ruined X-Men: Dark Phoenix by stealing its ending and forcing them to reshoot the movie.

This movie deserves a sequel, and we do. Dammit, i was so amazed when i saw it. Yeah, it's an adaptation, but it is so well made despite some defaults, you can feel the people who tried their best to do something enjoyable. They deserve that chance to do even better.

I freaking adore this movie, and saw it a few times... but when I first went to see it, I was apprehensive, and almost didn't go, because of my experience with all the other "adaptations."

@@logicaloverdrive8197 never listen to critic reviews (not NC). when it comes to movies or tv, i look at audience reviews. If its high audience, i usually end up liking it as well. The Orville is a great example of this. Season 1, Critics gave it a 10%. audience gave it a 95%. I loved it. Alita, i LOVED it. Hoping each day to hear news of a sequal or TV show on netflix or Amazon.

I think I recall back on social media how people argued that the actor playing Alita should've been played by an Asian woman because they thought the big cgi eyes was just the director trying to make the character look more anime. But that sounds stupid because regardless they would've done the same thing anyways just because it's supposed to kinda show Alita isn't human. Casting an Asian woman makes no difference.

main problem is they try to cram 3 story arcs of the comic into a single movie... really 4 counting her flashbacks.
...hmmm now that I think about it the rating may have had a lot to do with it. instead of turning her into a hunter warrior cutting off heads to earn the money she needs, they made her a roller ball player. that way she wouldn't look like a merciless killer and be more role modely.

A) MCU movies have set a high standart, which means that If one is mediocre, it is considered bad.
B) Both Brie Larson and her character of Carol Denvers came of as unlikeable and douchy.
C) Marvel kept pushing the whole Feminist angle which comes of bad. Especially in a Post-Wonder Woman world.
D) Captain Marvel was seriouly overpowered. So much so, that they had to cut her out of large chunks of Endgame.

When I first saw the trailer I thought it was gonna suck and be another addition to the list of bad anime movies. But after awhile I saw more trailers and it started to grow on me. The. I saw it in theaters and I can safely say this was one of the best live action anime movies.

The stigma of anime to live action being horrible is probably why this movie is more popular after its release and why it did not do so good at release.
I remembered reading about James Cameron's announcement of the Battle Angel movie in a now out-of-print magazine called Anime Insider in the mid-2000s. I recall it had a picture of Cameron with a speech bubble saying, "I'm king of the world!" followed by a cutout of Alita from the manga adding, "... and death to all who say otherwise!"
The article mentioned that the movie would be based around the motorball arc and I remember that after reading said article I had vivid fantasies about how the movie would look with Alita tearing up the motorball track while the stadium audience made up of a mix of normal humans and cyborgs cheered her on accompanied by gritty-sounding techno music like the music featured on the soundtracks for the Matrix films.
The motorball scenes in this movie brought me back to those memories all those years ago hitting me with a wave of nostalgia more intense than anything I ever felt before.
In my eyes the movie turned out to be everything I ever wanted the Alita film to be back then and more (minus the gritty-sounding techno music but looking back I should have realized only hacks would use such an obvious musical style for the soundtrack).
Well, I think something bluesy would work as a soundtrack, something Cowboy Bebop-esque. Alita even does something that looks like a blues performance blues at one point in the manga.
So, about those eyes: I don't know if anyone else out there remembers, but in the original trailer her eyes were WAY bigger than they ended up being, to the point that, when I saw said trailer, I cringed at just how big they were. It's why I never saw it when it first came out. I did find out later that they made her eyes a bit smaller than in the initial trailer, and I went ahead and got a copy to see for myself just what they did with what is one of my favorite anime and manga series.
Most of what you mentioned, both good and bad, I more or less agree with you about. There is, however, one exception to that: Motorball. This is one of those few portions that was missing from the anime that I had wished they included more of it in it, and was happy to see it spotlighted in this movie. It added the perfect bit of action that focused on it being a game rather than just mortal combat, which is what most of this movie, as well as its source material, had focused on. Personally I absolutely loved its addition.
At first I was a bit miffed when you said that they dropped the ball on him climbing the tube, but after hearing your reasoning on it, I can kinda see where you're coming from. I still feel they stayed true to the original immensely well, but...yeah, I suppose he wasn't as crazed as he was in the anime, I'll give you that one.
Finally, I absolutely loved the end of this review! When that black dude started explaining the shortcomings of Alita I had half-expected Stan from South Park to pop up out of nowhere and ask him, "Morgan Freeman, why is it when everything gets so convoluted you always come out of nowhere to explain everything?" Only to have him respond something to the respect of "I'm not Morgan Freeman. I think you might need some glasses kid." The part with the video climbing the tube was kinda corny, but...meh.
I freaking loved this movie as i loved the original story in manga. It is flawed, for sure. But you can tell the people who did this movie had passion for the original material.

I really enjoyed this film. It was fun, it looked good and now it makes me want to read the manga.
It's flawed, they try to fit too much into the movie, which leaves some of it a bit flat... But there's also so much cool stuff in there too, especially if you can get past some of the "anime" dialogue lol.
Personally I'd recommend it, but I'm sure many will have issues with it... But then I had issues with it and still loved it lol.

Don't know if this is meant to be sarcastic, but voice acting is usually considered more difficult.
So Tamara only got a voice role and not go on screen? Doug voiced those movies on Blockbuster City while showing up as the Nostalgia Critic, the main character of his show.

Honestly, it didn't take me very long to adjust to the eyes. I'm only ten minutes into this review as I'm typing this, have never even heard of the actual movie before today, and I'm already too invested to notice that it makes her look anything but adorable.
One thing that also hurt this movie's performance were "professional" critics attacking it in an attempt to prop up Captai Marvel in order to please their corporate overlords.

Professional movie critics aren't someone I go to to see if a movie might be worth a watch specifically for that reason. Same thing for reviews on video games. I go here on youtube for the reviews on things I have any interest in, to dudes like Angry Joe and others that point out ALL the flaws a game has. Graphics I don't really care that much about and Voice-acting can still be laughed at if it's bad. But if the controls suck, if the story sucks, if the characters themselves suck, if it's a Micro-transaction factory that cuts out chunks that SHOULD have been in it to begin with that force you to pay MORE money than the initial price to get the actual game (cough cough Destiny cough)? That's the things I care about, and an ACTUAL gamer or movie-goer is going to care about those things and sharing this info with their viewers, not just telling the viewers what they SHOULD want. We know what we want most of the time, and what we want the entertainment we pay for to have.
Because those critics didn’t go into Captain Marvel WANTING to hate it just so they could “Stick it to Brie Larson”

The stereotype with girls and chocolate is more oriented around science, actually. Girls are more likely to develop a sweet tooth and chocolate can ease the pains of...that time of the holiday, if you catch my drift.
Also, there's a holiday in Japan where girls make homemade chocolate for the guys who treated them on valentine's day. It tastes terrible but its the thought that counts.

Well I have two words on why I think so.. Captain Marvel. When CM came out the attitude was no female lead movie had the right to be in Marvel's shadow.

Hollywood fucked up almost all anime adaptions except that one and you want them to make another one live action anime is someting that in my opinon just doesn't work and it doesn't need to work. Even the japanese live action anime that I know of sucks. Honestly I'd rather just watch animated anime rather than people who are only interested in profit make shitty versions of the stories I love.
I'd pay an arm a leg and my immortal soul for a Hellsing Ultimate abridged live action film...

He’s great in the Witcher and maybe he could do a character similar but I don’t see him as a Dracula. With that said David tennant wouldn’t be a bad choice but I think I see him more as an Alexander Anderson

I think most of it has to be because of Sin City which apparently is one of his favorite movies. I admit, I also do like a lot of his work even if some his movies aren’t that great.

Was working in a movie theatre for a year or so leading up to this film's release. It was pushed back two or three times, meaning the trailer floated through the theatre for months, and I had to hear it a dozen times per shift. I thought it looked weird and most of the people I worked with, like me, didn't know anything about the source material. I forget why I actually stayed after work to watch it one day, but I freaking loved this movie. It had so much charm, great fight sequences, and amazing acting. Never would have watched it had I not worked at the cinema at the time, where I pretty saw everything because I didn't have to pay for tickets. I would encourage everyone to check this out

She also has abnormally big eyes in the manga. It is commented on several times and has very little to do with anime. That is just how her model is designed.
Funny thing is they even gave an explanation why they're big. Big eyes means a wider field of vision, perfect for a warrior
The problem is that in anime all eyes are big, but when only her eyes are big it looks really weird
"So, as you may have picked up, this movie is very disjointed but every joint is such a good high" I feel like that line went under the radar for how great of a fitting joke/pun it was
I saw this in theaters and was mad that the auditorium was nearly empty.

Regarding the bar scene and it "not feeling right," I chalk that up to "this is actually a coming of age story." In the beginning Alita has the body of a child/teen, and that matches her maturity level, and it's only after she gets her new body does she mature. Since this scene is with the child/teen body, I see this as her being an idealistic teenager that constantly makes communist facebook posts and doesn't understand why people are citing the track record of communist regimes. It actually makes perfect sense when you apply that filter.
