MARIANA CABUGUEIRA is an Architect and Urban Designer from Portugal, recently working as a Senior Architectural Designer at Zaha Hadid Architects; teaching at the Architectural Association DRL in London and doing Live workshops, Talks and webinars with students from all around the World. Graduated from the School of Architecture in Lisbon and the Politecnico di Milano, she moved to London to explore design and technology through the Postgraduate course: Design Research Laboratory (DRL) at the Architectural Association School (AA).
Her research interests gravitate around Parametric Design; Generative Design; Digital Design and Robotic Fabrication. Her final project proposes a cluster of towers, radically different but biologically similar, in the centre of London. Mariana joined Zaha Hadid Architects after graduating from the AA School in 2017. She is part of the Competition Cluster ever since, responsible for developing the High-End Design projects of the Office.
She was part of the Design Team of winning projects such as: Navi Mumbai Airport; Western Sydney Airport; Chongqing Terminal 3b; Exhibition Centre in Beijing; and most recently the Tower C in Shenzhen.

Once again, it was a lot of fun recording this with you Rishabh. Some parts were SAVAGE haha sorry for that. Another wonderful session of crits w/ Rishab and Mariana! Always look forward to her coming onto the show. She always brings this positive energy and eclectic mix of professionalism and casual humor. You can tell easily architecture truly is her passion :D
Her experiences from zha's perspective are similarly welcomed (and sometimes surprising - you would think the 3rd folio would be seen as more suitable to her taste but that's not the case at all). The contrast she brought up between the office's 60s works and 20th century futuristic ones is just 🤯
Also blew my mind how an industry standard platform like ISSUU isn't welcomed by offices. This is gonna make life much harder for students given the portfolio size limitations for emails and improving graphic standards taking up much more space than before. Very insightful discussion 👏

Very informative. Just a little request for the next episode. Please make a review video for the master's application portfolio with some professors (Indian as well as abroad). It would really help students.

I've heard people argue both ways on the links vs pdf question. I can see how a pdf is easier keep track of and share internally, but at the same time not everyone likes receiving large pdf's via email. A good website can elevate your portoflio with animated GIFs or videos, and lets a user find the information they want much quicker. This also allows you to include more work / projects to your portfolio without it becoming too much.
Imo you should have both and you could probably apply with both, as long as you communicate clearly what you are sending them and why.
I think its more of a company culture thing. Best go read what is required

I love your videos!! So informative !! And Mariana is my favorite guest in your series honestly when she explained how to structure a portfolio it really helped me a lot .. and low key made it seem seamless hahah.. Why don’t you do a version for student portfolio I think that would be helpful!! The way they are now I just don’t feel like I’m even close to where these designers are at in their career these portfolios are more developed and prettier than a student one would be.. but overall great video!!
super glad to know I was useful to your portfolio Fanan ♡ and that im your favorite guest eheh Some of these portfolios are actually from students, Sahar - the 2nd portfolio - is actually undergrad (pause for shock) I think R's selection criteria for my episodes are usually more graphically driven portfolios. Dont forget he picked his favorites from 400 so its ok if you feel they look ''prettier'' than what you have or see regularly

Hello thank you so much it was a great episode and motivating to develop my portfolio further to a new version! I have a question in case you have worked on project with a team and you have like 5-6 projects with the same team , is it considered in portfolio or its better to put you solo project works ?
Having in your portfolio projects developped in team is the same as including projects from an office you worked for. Of course you should include them. You can state its a group project or a project developped in this office - as a small, small, info about this project. and if you feel that it would be interesting to clarify which part you were responsible for go for it and point it out under the content produced exclusively by you - as a footnote

I am working in an Architectureoffice in germany with 500 employes and I do not know what architects do international, but here the first portfolio maybe would have a chance in working "real architecture". In college here you learn, we are not painters and grafics. Of course we have to do it on this level, but in reallife it is like 3% of our work. The goal is to build something, not just draw something. To talk with engys, get the shit build. We get alot of portfolios with not a single Detail in 1:20 scale where you can see insulation, foils and so on. We can not see, if the person is able to draw a constructiondetail and communicate with all engineers what kind of stuff has to be in this construction. We tell the engineers what they have to draw and not the engineers us. we have to know befor sending it to an engineer if this building will look like it. Knowing all ISO Rules or most, the law behind each countrys buildingsystem and so on. Here in Germany you do not earn much money with drawing. Most of time students draw, seniors build it. And who is building it earns most of money. If you can draw but not able to build it, you are not a great architect. Maybe good graficdesigner.
Hi, I very much agree! The emphasis these days is too much on the graphics/ design representation instead of how a building is really planned, realized and constructed. The technical know-how falls completely short - university teaches you nothing but designing. A lot of courses are too artistic and have little to no use in the real construction business. When I started working I was totally surprised how little I actually knew.

I noticed that many of the title cases were wrong, for example, rather than "Experimental model" it should be "Experimental Model". I noticed that many of the portfolios inappropriately use under case... but for titles, every word in the title should have an uppercase, unless it's a minor word such as "and" or "with". Other than that, I love your reviews! Thank you for this amazing resource.

Hey Rishabh, that was a great presentation. It was absolutely amazing to see you having a session with Mariana again. But i have a question, can someone become an architect without an architectural degree?? I mean if a person is really passionate about this field but right now he/she is doing their college degree in some other field which is completely unrelated to architecture, is there a way to get into this field??
Hi Sadiya! You can obtain a Masters in Architecture without having a bachelor's, many universities offer that option for students with non-architecture background! And you'll be having many undergraduate courses on the curriculum along with the masters so it takes around 2-3 years to complete depending on each school, good luck!

I'm in love with this series! I was thinking about what you guys said, that companies often look for specifies software programs. I know 2 kinds of BIM software programs actually (I'm a student still, from Brazil :D) and in a lot of companies I see them saying what software programs they use and, sometimes I feel its kind of useless putting projects that I used other software. Would will be good to separate portfolios? One with one software and another with the other one?
I think you should mention and include the softwares you use even if they are not the ones the office traditionally use. Sometimes its the office best interest to see the potential of other softwares and techniques, this encourages them to invest on new technology and bring new skills on. So always include them
i know in some contries having a picture is required, in the U.S. it isnt because it can be used as a cause for discrimination. idk if that true but there isnt really any good argument for it either.
Also pictures and graphics mess up AWS and makes your resume read wrong so it became best practice to aviod pictures. i think that idea carried over to protfolios
This is a discussion we did have in the previous episodes as well, where we talked about pictures and how some firms might use them to discriminate amongst people. I dont know how much this happens but I can completely understand why then people would be weary of putting their pictures up because of this reason.
I get what you mean. But also having a picture softens the idea that we are working machines, there is a person behind all that work. And the picture is a clear reminder of that. Its also not a deal breaker, so you can include it or not. Have it has you feel more confortable with.

In the USA you can not legally call yourself an Architect until you have completed all your AXP hours and Licensing Exams.
I think in most countries works like that. Which after 5 years studying and paying for that is absolutely appalling... Never followed that rule tbh

I disagree with Mariana about the links, because I do not see what is the difficult part of opening a link. I see someone who was trained in a way and they told her links are bad and in this office we just accept pdf, ok that is the requirement of the office. But a link is so much easier to load than a pdf, sometimes pdf are heavy and take time to download. Her arguments about why she did not like were not strong.

Sad you have no idea how to really build it in reality. you seems to have forgotten that matter do weights. weight bring tension, that needs to be corrected by stuff - structure. more design/graphism than architecture to me. why architecture keep going on that direction instead on going low tech / low ressource needs.
Hi Antoine, probably because that’s the direction you have knowledge about. There are multiple directions in architecture and construction, matter weights and there are infinite ways to solve this weight. You know one, I know 2. Out there you will find other 100. We cant constrain design ambition because of our small small architect-notion of construction
@@marianacabugueiracustodiod9548 Well, i see your point, and i’m honestly jealous of your design and rendering skills. Just saying i love that kind of rendering for decades. But seing world evolution as today, i can’t understand why the main architectural ambition still goes in that direction. We will definitely won’t have the money, the ressources, the social structure to keep thinking projects like that. This is not sustainable. As an architect i strongly believe we should inspire next generations by going into the direction of sobriety, minimalism and reasoning. That’s why i believe your work is much more design and art - in a way it looks like sci-fi to me - than architecture. You’re in the path of Archigram collective in my opinion. In latin architecture is the manifestation of the circumstance. Do you really believe regarding the actual challenges we have to face, that these kind of images or projects is what our children will see built? These images and way of thinking makes me dream but in opposition, this year’s pritzker gives me hope in what direction the architecture should go
