- These are some weirdo Coho! Coho Salomon are known for their aggressiveness. But when they hit Deep South Puget Sound they can be downright lockjawed. And crawl on the bottom like an ARMY or UNDEAD flounder! Thousands of Coho, but will any bite? #pugetsound #cohosalmon
BLAKE HERE (hey everyone, please pretend I put that in the video at 0:09).
Ya got me! It was in a place I wasn't expecting.
Hey dude, I watch a lot of fishing videos, Addicted fishing, Fishermans life all those guys.
But you have the best quality of videos, Everything you post is extremely helpful and real.
Thanks for the uploads ! :)
Whoa, that's crazy high praise! I super appreciate it. 🙏
I don't claim to be a great fisherman, or even a good one. But always happy to share what I know! (And leave in the 🤡 show stuff too). 😅
@@WAFishQuest You just seem to do the extra bits that keeps it interesting, I thought I knew a lot till I started watching your videos on certain rigs. Going to be fun next season :)
Hahah man that second fish was not giving in easy! Nice work and thanks for sharing
Thanks as always TMH! Yeah, I should buy a lotto ticket after that one!
I was squirming watching you land that second fish. I think we've all been there at some point, and those are the ones you always remember. Great job.
Ha ha, thanks! I couldn't have done that much worse 😅
me too, after that first pass with the net I said Oh NO! Wish I was there to help him out!
That's a cool fishery, thanks for sharing master Blake
That was awesome man! I thought that second fish was getting off for sure. Good work buddy.
Thanks Bryce! If "Marry up" wasn't on my family crest, I'd probably be "Better to be lucky than good."
Absolutely fantastic job Blake!
Thank you as always!
Looks like two nice hens. Great job Blake!
Thanks Jeff! Yep, some nice eggies in there.
Killer video Blake, nice boat!
Talk about a cliffhanger whew! Great catch and thanks for the vid..nice boat man
Thank you so much! I'm loving the new old boat. 😊
I can't believe you landed that second one! Nice fish Blake! 🍻
Hey Blake, you even got a few cameo shots of my new boat and myself jigging for these crazed beasts. We landed four on jigs this year and that was a first for me. Usually they jump so much they come off. Nice to see you have a new ride also. Definitely be hitting them again next year.
Chris!!! How the heck are you man? I'll be looking for you next year. I plan to hit it a lot!
Funny, I was just fishing those same spots and had the same "problem". I had my fly rod out and hooked into a couple coho. I'll have to keep an eye for your new to you boat. Two in the boat! Nice work and keep posting the videos!
Thanks Lazy Surf! That must have been bonkers on the fly!!
Cool, had no idea that fishery existed. Thanks for educating me!
You're welcome DJ! It's been around awhile but it's been getting better and better returns. I probably wouldn't have done a video on it, but there are sooooo many fish to harvest and it's a terminal fishery.
Hey! I see my parents place in the background! Awesome job man! We had a lot of fun out there this summer
Awesome, thanks CJ!! What a great fishery. It's a pretty close drive for me so I'm sure I'll be there a lot next year!
@@WAFishQuest by far the best we've seen it in years
What a great time, glad to see you got a new (to you) boat. Nice fish
Thanks as always Steve! I appreciate it as always!
Holy Coho, you gave me a heart attack with that second one!
Thanks as always Wojomojo! Not only did I land that fish. I didn't even drop my rod overboard!
Excellent! Thank you!
You're welcome! 😊
Awesome video, Blake! That fishery was so much fun this year. I went up there every chance I had and enjoyed making a fool of myself trying to solo-net at least one fish every time. Crazy how they bite differently-I caught most of mine right off the bottom with hoochie or a spinning lure like Brad’s cutplug. So much fun for me, and I’m sure entertainment for everyone else😄😄. The kids even came out and all caught a fish one day.
Appreciate your content and down-to-earth attitude.
Netting solo is always fun.😅😂 nice job
Thanks 😅
Great job Blake.
Thanks and I love the name 😂
Nice boat bro, you deserve it, great show!
Thanks as always Mark! I owe my buddies Shingo, Levi, and Hugh for a lot of help getting it up and running!
@@WAFishQuest It's just real good to have friends and fishing buddies are some of the best! Hope that you take the family out soon too, we always dod double duty as tubing and fishing on our boat
I also fish alone a lot and it does get crazy sometimes when it comes to netting a big fish by yourself. Great job.
Thanks! Sometimes it's better to be lucky than good. 😂
@@WAFishQuest I been very lucky many many times😂😂
Great video Blake. Really enjoyed it
Thank you Dale! I super appreciate it.
Awesome video!
You need a net with an extended handle.
The fish that are rolling on top you need to troll a cut plug herring with no weight right in front of them.
Try to cut in front of them.
Your going to put those Uglysticks to the test.
I used to use that method at Chambers .
Chambers fish are picky but they love that herring right on top.
Heck yeah! I love it. Thanks for the fine advice!!
nice to see you out in the new boat.
Good fishing Blake! 🎣
Thank you David! 🎉
Another great video! Hope the boat is working well for you!
Thanks Sam! Yeah it has been great!!
It was easy to tell how excited you were on that 2nd fish, excellent. When I go to the waterfront these days all the chit chat ends up on the topic of Coho. The boat is also working out great for ya it seems.
Thanks Mike!! The boat has been so great.
Two great looking cohos!! Fish on!!
Great Video Blake!!!
Nice job Blake!!
Thank you, thank you!
Omg Blake. Was out this AM watching them jump all over. Not one bite. Couldn't figure it out. Literally said the same thing...at least it's fun to see the salmon. 😂
Hey Blake! I fish those fish from shore and do really well! I have some things I have figured out about them to get them to bite
That's awesome!! Thanks for letting me know.
Had a full blown anxiety attack watching you land the second one.
Yeah... If only Id had a few so I could blame it on that. 😅
is this the fish I forgot to ask for a piece of when I left ! argh! :) youre excitment is contagious,., another Great video,.!!
Thanks for sharing,.its always the highlight of MY day! :).,.what did you decide to name the boat? (ps ., to us Long time Fish questers.,.WE Love your vest) and your plumber pants too LOL !! We admire your personality and your choices !
Thank you as always Mom! Still haven't named it. but I will. ILYM!
0:49 Smooth...
Ha ha thanks! 😅
😂 You may have deserved to lose that second fish, but you certainly earned it.
Those MA13 Coho are insane. You'll spend 4 hours fishing with no bites, pack up your stuff, then they all start jumping only to stop when you get your rod back out😂 These guys are the Bain of my existence..
I soooooo feel you there! Part of the reason I wasn't worried about spot burning with this video is it's likely a lot of first timers would be frustrated opposed to say, MA10 where they're still aggressive
Sweet boat buddy
That’s is awesome 🎉 especially being in our backyard
Thanks Calvin! We absolutely need to get on a collab. Especially now that I too have a functional boat!
@@WAFishQuest - Absolutely
Hiya Blake😃💙💚
Nice Fish. Better pay your net guy a little more so he will net a little faster haha.
Thanks! I fired that dude! 😎
Try netting them off the back of the boat. Basically set your net behind the boat, then lean back as hard as you can to drag it in. I've found it to be way easier to solo net fish doing it like that rather than off the side, where the current is dragging across your net.
That makes a lot of sense. Thanks!
for solo fishing look into getting a "no feedback" steering column. it holds the wheel at the position you leave it at and doesn't allow the motor to pull the cable and flop the steering over.
When fishing alone I'll set the wheel to a slight turn on the side of the rod the fish hit.
Also if you can set a rod holder facing almost straight up and down (or maybe slightly leaning outboard). when you reel the fish in near enough and ready to net, set the rod into the holder (with drag on light) and you can net the fish easier. The rod holder holds the rod, (cut you can still use one had to guide the flasher, tip of the rod) and/or use both hands on the net.
I've done this when solo halibut fishing too.
Awesome suggestions. Thank you for taking the time!! Both great ideas!
Awesome!
When they go lock jaw in the salt I troll like 3-4mph and shorten my leaders for hootchies and spoons. Also been putting spin fish into the rotation despite my initial skepticism.... 25" leaders and fluorescent colors and a load of tuna in oil.
Thanks Spencer! I super appreciate the info.
I applaud you wearing a life jacket. Watch for the black friday sales at West Marine, the more comfortable auto inflation jackets generally go on sale for like 59.99....how i stocked up my boat.
Did I miss the "Blake Here", or was there not one this time around?
Way to keep at it on that second fish! I thought you were going to lose it, but the hook must have firmly been behind some bone there.
Oh no! I just forgot. 😅 Dang it. I'm half tempted to take the video down. Thanks as always Jarom!!
Ha ha! See my pinned comments Jarom. A bit meta and lazy of me, but it'll have to do. 😅
Ever tried tempting those jumping cohos with a small fly? Where I used to fish for them, jigs, spinners, spoons, no dice, but occasionally they would take a fly…
Nice. Thanks for the intel. Maybe next year! After I filmed this and buddy and I did get a couple in the shallows on spinners.
You have inspired me to buy shorter trolling rods for solo fishing.
As for me? I'm getting arm extensions. Well, only the left.
Congratulations on the new boat. Another great, entertaining and informative video. Since I moved to Tumwater, I've heard about the "net pen" fishery. Thanks for the information. May I ask where you launch from and what time of year would you recommend for this fishery? I would sure like to give it a try next season. Maybe buddy boat, or ride along. 🙂
Hey BayWolf! Yeah maybe we could do a collab. I was super late to the fishery this year. But could be because they were back earlier. I started Sept 16. By the end of month it was pretty slow. They were there in early September tho. So I'd say try it that first week of September. People were successfully jigging them then. By the time I joined the fray the jig bite was off. I launch from Latimer's Landing which is righhhht before the Hartstine Island bridge.
Thanks Blake. I’ll reach out to you as the season approaches. It would be really fun to do a collaboration with you.
Let’s stay in touch.
This was an action pack episode of Washington fish quest!
Thank you as always Khanh!! I didn't even drop my pole in the water!
i’m watching 👀
I choose to take this comment as 🎃 🔪
@@WAFishQuest 😂 yeah I know a little about the salmon you catch….
2 fish is 2 fish, I'm going to have to think about how you got that second one on the boat for about 5 years and master your technique! 😅
I may try next season. (Kayak) Pinks run there too?
Fun video and nice grade coho! Solo net jobs are legit! What model Garmin is that?
Where do they get the eggs for the net pen project? Do they catch then and keep them in tanks until they are ready to spawn?
Awesome video blake. Do you have to use a down rigger for salmon fishing, or can you use the flasher setup without the down rigger. I know nothing about salmon fishing. But I want to learn
Hey Adam! Nope, you don't need a downrigger. If you need to get deep you can use a cannonball sinker, a banana weight or a deep six diver to get to depth. I caught one just in a spinner the following weekend in this fishery too. Right on the surface. 😊
thanks for the great catching video! I was yelling at you about the other rod but you didn't hear me. 😊 Does your neck get sore looking back at the rods when steering from the front? Mine and my son does.
Hi Toni! I'm just getting used to it, but kind of. 😅 The camera actually helps because I can see at least one rod in it. But, still figuring it. Sounds like maybe I should just get a good chiropractor 😅
Always a pain in the butt to fish on Your own...ever need a copilot we can hook up..im a south sound guy and i have a noce little boat with all the bells and whistles and im retired ..lol...and curiously where did ya launch..? Off the peninsula or Zittles?..
Thank you, thank you! I launched out of Latimer's Landing to fish there. But I launch all over in general.
@WAFishQuest yeah there is a free launch on key peninsula off 72nd and just about a 20 min run depending on how fast your boat is to get to hartstein area...devils head tends to hold silvers as well..
Latimers Landing, right next to the bridge there...
What if you tried river gear like eggs or twitching jigs?
Both worth a shot! 👻
How’s the new boat?
Hi Patricia! It's been great -- thank you for asking!
where would you recommend from the bank to fish this area
I saw some people fishing the dock at Latimer's Landing. But other than that I don't know of any public bank. But I'm also not very familiar with Hartstine. There is Jarrell Cove State Park on the east side. But this was filmed on the Westside so I'm not sure if fish are in the eastdide or not .
Hey dude, nice catch! I am by myself a lot in area 9 and 10, and just wondering if you can use two rods by yourself? I've definitely seen a lot of solo guys with 2 rods but many people online saying you cant.
Hey SaltyPeach! Thank you! The only marine area I know you can do is for sure is Marine Area 13. So all the water basically south of the Tacoma Narrows bridge. also southern hood canal, MA12. I know you can't in about any other saltwater. I don't think you can anywhere in MA9 or 10. And that's about all I know.
Blake, Awesome job with your videos. What speed are you Trolling?
Do people ever try twitching jigs?
I didn't see anyone doing that, but worth a shot! I tried jigging but accidentally foul hooked a couple, so switched off that approach. They were not twitching jigs tho.
@@WAFishQuest That's the problem with the method, it can definitely get locked jawed fish to bite, but you can also snag fish. Barbless hooks all the way when twitching regardless of regs.
new boat ?
Hey Joe! Yes sir, 1982 Beach craft. 15 footer. First ever boat with a steering column.
When was this? Are there still coho around this late in October? Mahalo and well done!
Thanks Nisqually Dave!! There's still a few but I think it's pretty wrapped up. They were kind of early this year tho. Usually they're still around into mid - October.
Do you ever try to jig this fishery with grim reefers?
Oooh maybe next year! People do jig it. And they had a lot of success earlier in the fishery. I was real late tho. By then they didn't seem to hit jigs. But a small grim reefer is worth a shot!
I love the reefers! Especially with the new Hi-vis patterns.
*Hyper-Vis+
Hey man nice job. I noticed you trolling with the main, why not use the kicker?
Hello! Thank you! I go back and forth. I found it was easier for me with the big motor because I pickup and rest my troll a lot in that fishery.
Why are you wearing that ridiculously uncomfortable life jacket?😂
What?! My life jacket is dope! 😎
@@WAFishQuest I Agree!!your life jacket is dope and as unique as you R!! jaysteely needs to watch your vid on your charismatic life vest!!
Does your boat have hydraulic steering? If you spend a lot of time fishing solo you need an autopilot. It'll let you fish and not be constantly trying to make minor steering corrections to avoid spinning in circles and tangling your gear
Where the hell did these guys learn how to net a fish. Why does he have that kiddie life vest on. That's a flat lake .
... and don't get me started on his mustache!
@@WAFishQuest😂
Anyone who bitches about the sound of a clicker aint worth a second of your time.
Thanks! I appreciate it. I've gotten a few complaints. Some people ain't happy 'less they're complaining. (But to be fair, sometimes I get there myself?.
I agree !!
